Zusammenfassung Es wird gezeigt, dass Phenobarbital- und Urethan-Anästhesie nach Infusion von PGE₁ in den Kreislauf normaler Hunde verschiedene hämodynamische Reaktionen (Herzminutenvolumen, Herzfrequenz, Durchblutung der Peripherie) verursacht.Die Intrakoronarinfusion von PGE₁ mit der Narkose ergab einen negativ chronotropen und einen negativ inotropen Effekt.

Synthesis,crystallization and properties of acetyl phenylalanyl lysine chloromethyl ketone: A potential inhibitor of serine proteases

Summary A procedure for the synthesis of acetyl phenylalanyl lysine chloromethyl ketone is described. The chloromethyl ketone derivative is a noncompetitive inhibitor of trypsin (K₁=5.9×10^–3 M).Acknowledgments. The authors are grateful to Dr Arthur L. Effect of sodium butyrate in combination with prostaglandin E1 and inhibitors of cyclic nucleotide phosphodiesterase on human amelanotic melanoma cells in culture

Summary Sodium butyrate and cyclic AMP-stimulating agents (prostaglandin E₁, papaverine, theophylline, and RO20-1724) caused reductions in the cell number (primarily due to reduction in cell division) when added individually to human melanoma cells in culture. However, the combination of sodium butyrate with one of the cyclic AMP-stimulating agents produced a marked reduction in cell number (primarily due to cell death).Supported in part by BRSG grant RR-05357 awarded by Biomedical Research Support Grant Program, Division of Research Resources, National Institutes of Health. Learned aversion and rearing movement in rats given LiCl,PbCl2 or NaCl

Summary The effects of an i.p. injection of 0.15 M LiCl resembled closely the effects of another toxic substance, 0.005 M PbCl₂, on conditioned aversion to saccharin and rearing movements in male rats. The findings suggest that nonspecific aversive after-effects of a LiCl injection can account fully for prompt effects of LiCl on rearing behavior.Acknowledgments. The identification of dehydroretinol (vitamin A2) in human skin

Summary Vitamin A₂ has for the first time been identified in a human tissue and, in contrast to vitamin A₁, its concentration in the epidermis is markedly increased in a hyperkeratotic condition (Psoriasis vulgaris).Acknowledgments. Elevated kidney glucosyltransferase activity in genetic prediabetic mice

Summary Glucosyltransferase activity in the renal cortex of genetic diabetic KK mice was significantly increased at 40 days of age when compared to that of Swiss albino and F₁ hybrid mice. This increase in enzyme activity in the absence of glucose intolerance can be regarded as an earlier genetic marker for the diagnosis of diabetic microangiopathy.Acknowledgments. Immobilization of chicken liver fructose 1,6-bisphosphatase on CNBr-activated Sepharose

Summary Chicken liver fructose 1,6-bisphosphatase is readily immobilized on CNBr-activated Sepharose. The immobilization alters some enzymatic properties. They include broader pH activity curve, loss of activation by K⁺ or NH ₄ ⁺ , increased resistance to inactivation by trypsin, decreased sensitivity to AMP inhibition, and loss of cooperative interaction among AMP-binding sites. The immobilized enzyme retains about 38% or 19% of the specific activity of the native enzyme when the activity is measured in the absence or presence of K⁺, resepctively.This work was supported by grant RR-8006 from the General Research Branch, Division of Research Resources, NIH (USA).     

Imparied bone resorption of cultured calvaria from mice with abnormal lysosomal function (the Chediak-Higashi syndrome)

Summary Spontaneous bone resorption is reduced in cultured calvarial bones from mice with the Chediak-Higashi syndrome, as indicated by decreased mobilization of calcium from the bones to the medium. Although bone resorption in calvaria from mice with this disease can be stimulated by PGE₂ and 1 (OH)D₃, the amounts of mineral released after stimulation is also decreased.This investigation was supported by grants from the Swedish Association against Rheumatic Diseases, from the Royal 80 Year Fund of King Gustav V, and from the Swedish Medical Research Council (project No 14X-05426).

Lead potentiation of endotoxin lethality in rats: Lack of effect of kininase inhibition

Summary Although lead and SQ₂₀₈₈₁ are potent in vitro inhibitors of kininase II activity, SQ₂₀₈₈₁ does not alter the sensitivity of rats to endotoxin. These results indicate that marked changes in plasma kininase activity do not contribute to endotoxin morbility and that kininase inhibition is not the mechanism whereby lead ions sensitize rats to endotoxin.This investigation was supported by the Naval Medical Research and Development Command, NNMC, Department of the Navy, Research Task No. MR041.20.01.0435. Flow microcalorimetric bioassay of polyene antibiotics: Interaction with growingSaccharomyces cerevisiae

Summary Microcalorimetric investigation of the interaction of polyene antibiotics with mid-exponential cells of a growing culture ofSaccharomyces cerevisiae has been used as the basis of a bioassay procedure. The assay is rapid, sensitive and reproducible. The results are compared to classical assays and potency ranking orders.This work was supported by the Science Research Council. (Studentship for B.Z. Chowdhry). We are grateful to the Central Research Fund of London University for funds to purchase the flow nephelometer used to support this study.     

Theoretical prediction of carcinogenicity: Quasi-quantification by quasi-valence. A reply to V. Veljkovic and D. I. Lalovic

Summary We have shown the recently proposed method for prediction of carcinogenicity by average quasi-valence number to be neither a good predictor of carcinogenicity, nor of non-carcinogenicity.Grants to Edward J. Ultrastructure of synapses of the metacestode ofHymenolepis microstoma

Summary The ultrastructure of the synapses of the metacestode ofHymenolepsis microstoma is described. Many features observed are similar to those of many invertebrate and vertebrate synapses where mechanical strength is of importance. These observations indicate an early phylogenetic origin for this type of synapse.This work was supported by a grant from the University of New Brunswick Research Fund.     

Distribution of repetitious DNA in human chromosomes

Ileal absorption of disodium ethane-1-hydroxy-1,1-diphosphonate (EHDP) and disodium dichloromethylene diphosphonate (Cl2 MDP) in the chick

Summary The setae ofA. pallipes have a pattern of distribution. Many of the setae, although of a different type, are always found together.
