We introduce a long‐memory autoregressive conditional Poisson (LMACP) model to model highly persistent time series of counts. The model is applied to forecast quoted bid–ask spreads, a key parameter in stock trading operations. It is shown that the LMACP nicely captures salient features of bid–ask spreads like the strong autocorrelation and discreteness of observations. We discuss theoretical properties of LMACP models and evaluate rolling‐window forecasts of quoted bid–ask spreads for stocks traded at NYSE and NASDAQ. We show that Poisson time series models significantly outperform forecasts from AR, ARMA, ARFIMA, ACD and FIACD models. The economic significance of our results is supported by the evaluation of a trade schedule. Scheduling trades according to spread forecasts we realize cost savings of up to 14 % of spread transaction costs. Copyright © 2013 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

This paper shows that a constrained autoregressive model that assigns linearly decreasing weights to past observations of a stationary time series has important links to the variance ratio methodology and trend stationary model. It is demonstrated that the proposed autoregressive model is asymptotically related to the variance ratio through the weighting schedules that these two tools use. It is also demonstrated that under a trend stationary time series process the proposed autoregressive model approaches a trend stationary model when the memory of the autoregressive model is increased. These links create a theoretical foundation for tests that confront the random walk model simultaneously against a trend stationary and a variety of short‐ and long‐memory autoregressive alternatives. Several studies have tested for long‐range dependence in macroeconomic and financial time series but very few have assessed the usefulness of long‐memory models as forecast‐generating mechanisms. This study tests for fractional differencing in the US monetary indices (simple sum and divisia) and compares the out‐of‐sample fractional forecasts to benchmark forecasts. The long‐memory parameter is estimated using Robinson's Gaussian semi‐parametric and multivariate log‐periodogram methods. The evidence amply suggests that the monetary series possess a fractional order between one and two. Fractional out‐of‐sample forecasts are consistently more accurate (with the exception of the M3 series) than benchmark autoregressive forecasts but the forecasting gains are not generally statistically significant. In terms of forecast encompassing, the fractional model encompasses the autoregressive model for the divisia series but neither model encompasses the other for the simple sum series. Exploring the Granger‐causation relationship is an important and interesting topic in the field of econometrics. In the traditional model we usually apply the short‐memory style to exhibit the relationship, but in practice there could be other different influence patterns. Besides the short‐memory relationship, Chen (2006) demonstrates a long‐memory relationship, in which a useful approach is provided for estimation where the time series are not necessarily fractionally co‐integrated. In that paper two different relationships (short‐memory and long‐memory relationship) are regarded whereby the influence flow is decayed by geometric, or cutting off, or harmonic sequences. However, it limits the model to the stationary relationship. This paper extends the influence flow to a non‐stationary relationship where the limitation is on ?0.5 ≤ d ≤ 1.0 and it can be used to detect whether the influence decays off (?0.5 ≤ d < 0.5) or is permanent (0.5 ≤ d ≤ 1.0). A mean square error criterion is proposed in this paper to provide a systematic approach to approximate a long‐memory time series by a short‐memory ARMA(1, 1) process. Analytic expressions are derived to assess the effect of such an approximation. These results are established not only for the pure fractional noise case, but also for a general autoregressive fractional moving average long‐memory time series. Performances of the ARMA(1,1) approximation as compared to using an ARFIMA model are illustrated by both computations and an application to the Nile river series. Results derived in this paper shed light on the forecasting issue of a long‐memory process. Copyright © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Financial data series are often described as exhibiting two non‐standard time series features. First, variance often changes over time, with alternating phases of high and low volatility. Such behaviour is well captured by ARCH models. Second, long memory may cause a slower decay of the autocorrelation function than would be implied by ARMA models. Fractionally integrated models have been offered as explanations. Recently, the ARFIMA–ARCH model class has been suggested as a way of coping with both phenomena simultaneously. For estimation we implement the bias correction of Cox and Reid ( 1987 ). For daily data on the Swiss 1‐month Euromarket interest rate during the period 1986–1989, the ARFIMA–ARCH (5,d,2/4) model with non‐integer d is selected by AIC. Model‐based out‐of‐sample forecasts for the mean are better than predictions based on conditionally homoscedastic white noise only for longer horizons (τ > 40). Regarding volatility forecasts, however, the selected ARFIMA–ARCH models dominate. Copyright © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

We propose two methods to predict nonstationary long‐memory time series. In the first one we estimate the long‐range dependent parameter d by using tapered data; we then take the nonstationary fractional filter to obtain stationary and short‐memory time series. In the second method, we take successive differences to obtain a stationary but possibly long‐memory time series. For the two methods the forecasts are based on those obtained from the stationary components. Copyright © 2007 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

It is well known that some economic time series can be described by models which allow for either long memory or for occasional level shifts. In this paper we propose to examine the relative merits of these models by introducing a new model, which jointly captures the two features. We discuss representation and estimation. Using simulations, we demonstrate its forecasting ability, relative to the one‐feature models, both in terms of point forecasts and interval forecasts. We illustrate the model for daily S&P500 volatility. Copyright © 2005 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

This paper presents an autoregressive fractionally integrated moving‐average (ARFIMA) model of nominal exchange rates and compares its forecasting capability with the monetary structural models and the random walk model. Monthly observations are used for Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and the United Kingdom for the period of April 1973 through December 1998. The estimation method is Sowell's (1992) exact maximum likelihood estimation. The forecasting accuracy of the long‐memory model is formally compared to the random walk and the monetary models, using the recently developed Harvey, Leybourne and Newbold (1997) test statistics. The results show that the long‐memory model is more efficient than the random walk model in steps‐ahead forecasts beyond 1 month for most currencies and more efficient than the monetary models in multi‐step‐ahead forecasts. This new finding strongly suggests that the long‐memory model of nominal exchange rates be studied as a viable alternative to the conventional models. We introduce an approximate dynamic factor model for modeling and forecasting large panels of realized volatilities. Since the model is estimated by means of principal components and low‐dimensional maximum likelihood, it does not suffer from the curse of dimensionality. We apply the model to a panel of 90 daily realized volatilities pertaining to S&P 100 from January 2001 to December 2008. Results show that our model is able to capture the stylized facts of panels of volatilities (comovements, clustering, long memory, dynamic volatility, skewness and heavy tails), and that it performs fairly well in forecasting, in particular in periods of turmoil, in which it outperforms standard univariate benchmarks. Methods of time series forecasting are proposed which can be applied automatically. However, they are not rote formulae, since they are based on a flexible philosophy which can provide several models for consideration. In addition it provides diverse diagnostics for qualitatively and quantitatively estimating how well one can forecast a series. The models considered are called ARARMA models (or ARAR models) because the model fitted to a long memory time series (t) is based on sophisticated time series analysis of AR (or ARMA) schemes (short memory models) fitted to residuals Y(t) obtained by parsimonious‘best lag’non-stationary autoregression. Both long range and short range forecasts are provided by an ARARMA model Section 1 explains the philosophy of our approach to time series model identification. Sections 2 and 3 attempt to relate our approach to some standard approaches to forecasting; exponential smoothing methods are developed from the point of view of prediction theory (section 2) and extended (section 3). ARARMA models are introduced (section 4). Methods of ARARMA model fitting are outlined (sections 5,6). Since‘the proof of the pudding is in the eating’, the methods proposed are illustrated (section 7) using the classic example of international airline passengers.  相似文献

Modelling and forecasting time series sampled at different frequencies   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
This paper discusses how to specify an observable high‐frequency model for a vector of time series sampled at high and low frequencies. To this end we first study how aggregation over time affects both the dynamic components of a time series and their observability, in a multivariate linear framework. We find that the basic dynamic components remain unchanged but some of them, mainly those related to the seasonal structure, become unobservable. Building on these results, we propose a structured specification method built on the idea that the models relating the variables in high and low sampling frequencies should be mutually consistent. After specifying a consistent and observable high‐frequency model, standard state‐space techniques provide an adequate framework for estimation, diagnostic checking, data interpolation and forecasting. An example using national accounting data illustrates the practical application of this method. Copyright © 2008 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Hidden Markov models are often used to model daily returns and to infer the hidden state of financial markets. Previous studies have found that the estimated models change over time, but the implications of the time‐varying behavior have not been thoroughly examined. This paper presents an adaptive estimation approach that allows for the parameters of the estimated models to be time varying. It is shown that a two‐state Gaussian hidden Markov model with time‐varying parameters is able to reproduce the long memory of squared daily returns that was previously believed to be the most difficult fact to reproduce with a hidden Markov model. Capturing the time‐varying behavior of the parameters also leads to improved one‐step density forecasts. Finally, it is shown that the forecasting performance of the estimated models can be further improved using local smoothing to forecast the parameter variations. In this paper we develop a latent structure extension of a commonly used structural time series model and use the model as a basis for forecasting. Each unobserved regime has its own unique slope and variances to describe the process generating the data, and at any given time period the model predicts a priori which regime best characterizes the data. This is accomplished by using a multinomial logit model in which the primary explanatory variable is a measure of how consistent each regime has been with recent observations. The model is especially well suited to forecasting series which are subject to frequent and/or major shocks. An application to nominal interest rates shows that the behaviour of the three‐month US Treasury bill rate is adequately explained by three regimes. The forecasting accuracy is superior to that produced by a traditional single‐regime model and a standard ARIMA model with a conditionally heteroscedastic error. The primary purpose of this paper is to investigate whether a novel Markov regime-switching mixed-data sampling (MRS-MIADS) model we design can improve the prediction accuracy of the realized variance (RV) of Bitcoin. Moreover, to verify whether the importance of jumps for RV forecasting changes over time, we extend the standard MIDAS model to characterize two volatility regimes and introduce a jump-driven time-varying transition probability between the two regimes. Our results suggest that the proposed novel MRS-MIDAS model exhibits statistically significant improvement for forecasting the RV of Bitcoin. In addition, we find that jump occurrences significantly increase the persistence of the high-volatility regime and switch between high- and low-volatility regimes. A wide range of checks confirm the robustness of our results. Finally, the proposed model shows significant improvement for 2-week and 1-month horizon forecasts.  相似文献

Recent studies suggest realized volatility provides forecasts that are as good as option‐implied volatilities, with improvement stemming from the use of high‐frequency data instead of a long‐memory specification. This paper examines whether volatility persistence can be captured by a longer dataset consisting of over 15 years of intra‐day data. Volatility forecasts are evaluated using four exchange rates (AUD/USD, EUR/USD, GBP/USD, USD/JPY) over horizons ranging from 1 day to 3 months, using an expanded set of short‐range and long‐range dependence models. The empirical results provide additional evidence that significant incremental information is found in historical forecasts, beyond the implied volatility information for all forecast horizons. Bayesian inference via Gibbs sampling is studied for forecasting technological substitutions. The Box–Cox transformation is applied to the time series AR(1) data to enhance the linear model fit. We compute Bayes point and interval estimates for each of the parameters from the Gibbs sampler. The unknown parameters are the regression coefficients, the power in the Box–Cox transformation, the serial correlation coefficient, and the variance of the disturbance terms. In addition, we forecast the future technological substitution rate and its interval. Model validation and model choice issues are also addressed. Two numerical examples with real data sets are given.©1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Conventional wisdom holds that restrictions on low‐frequency dynamics among cointegrated variables should provide more accurate short‐ to medium‐term forecasts than univariate techniques that contain no such information; even though, on standard accuracy measures, the information may not improve long‐term forecasting. But inconclusive empirical evidence is complicated by confusion about an appropriate accuracy criterion and the role of integration and cointegration in forecasting accuracy. We evaluate the short‐ and medium‐term forecasting accuracy of univariate Box–Jenkins type ARIMA techniques that imply only integration against multivariate cointegration models that contain both integration and cointegration for a system of five cointegrated Asian exchange rate time series. We use a rolling‐window technique to make multiple out of sample forecasts from one to forty steps ahead. Relative forecasting accuracy for individual exchange rates appears to be sensitive to the behaviour of the exchange rate series and the forecast horizon length. Over short horizons, ARIMA model forecasts are more accurate for series with moving‐average terms of order >1. ECMs perform better over medium‐term time horizons for series with no moving average terms. The results suggest a need to distinguish between ‘sequential’ and ‘synchronous’ forecasting ability in such comparisons. Copyright © 2002 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Since volatility is perceived as an explicit measure of risk, financial economists have long been concerned with accurate measures and forecasts of future volatility and, undoubtedly, the Generalized Autoregressive Conditional Heteroscedasticity (GARCH) model has been widely used for doing so. It appears, however, from some empirical studies that the GARCH model tends to provide poor volatility forecasts in the presence of additive outliers. To overcome the forecasting limitation, this paper proposes a robust GARCH model (RGARCH) using least absolute deviation estimation and introduces a valuable estimation method from a practical point of view. Extensive Monte Carlo experiments substantiate our conjectures. As the magnitude of the outliers increases, the one‐step‐ahead forecasting performance of the RGARCH model has a more significant improvement in two forecast evaluation criteria over both the standard GARCH and random walk models. Strong evidence in favour of the RGARCH model over other competitive models is based on empirical application. By using a sample of two daily exchange rate series, we find that the out‐of‐sample volatility forecasts of the RGARCH model are apparently superior to those of other competitive models. Business data frequently arise in the form of concurrent time series. We present a general framework for simultaneous modeling and fitting of such series using the class of Box—Jenkins models. This framework is an exchangeable hierarchical Bayesian model incorporating dependence among the series. Our motivating data set consists of regional IBM revenue available monthly for several geographic regions. Stationary seasonal autoregressive models are simultaneously fit to the regional data series using various error covariance specifications for the strong interregional dependence. A modified Gibbs sampling algorithm is used to carry out the fitting and to enable all subsequent inference. Graphical techniques using predictive distributions are employed to assess model adequacy and to select among models. Outlier estimation and prediction under the chosen model are used for planning and to measure the effect of special promotional events.  相似文献
