The fine structure ofCorynebacterium minutissimum

Zusammenfassung Die charakteristischen Ultrastrukturen vom Erythrasma verursachendenCorynebacterium minutissimum waren: 1) dreifache Zellwand, 2) Mesosomen und 3) leicht elektronendurchlässige cytoplasmische Einschlüsse («volutin»). Im Laboratorium kultivierte Zellen und solche aus der Haut von Patienten mit Erythrasma zeigten die gleichen Strukturmerkmale.     

The fine structure of the conical-headed sperm of the crinoidAntedon bifida

Summary Scanning- and transmission electron microscopy show that the sperm head ofAntedon bifida is conical and thus different from the spherical sperm head that is typical of crinoids. The head consists of the acrosome and the nucleus. The posterior fibrogranular component of the acrosome is housed in a tubular, axial invagination running from the anterior pole almost to the posterior pole of the nucleus. The middle piece includes a mitochondrion and a pair of centrioles. One of the centrioles is a basal body, which gives rise to the tail flagellum.     

The fine structure of walker 256 carcinoma cells

Summary Several ultrastructural features of Walker 256 rat tumor cells which have not been observed before are revealed. Nuclear bodies either singlely or in pairs were found in some cells. Cytofilaments were observed in the cytoplasm and cytoplasmic projections in a few cells. Desmosomes which are usually regarded as a feature of differentiated cells were also observed.     

Variation of the fine structure in granulocytes of great apes

Zusammenfassung Elektronenmikroskopische Untersuchungen der Granulocyten anthropoider Affen ergaben Unterschiede in der Struktur der eosinophilen Granula und eine bisher unbekannte fibrilläre Granulationsform in Orangutan Neutrophilen.

The fine structure of cloned cells from normal adult rat brain

Summary A cell clone was isolated from a normal adult rat brain culture and maintained in vitro for many passages. It possessed glial characteristics; in particular ultrastructural examination revealed astrocytic features including the presence of filaments 9–11 nm in diameter.Acknowledgments. Localization of peroxidase activity inTrypanosoma cruzi microbodies

Summary Electron microscopic observation ofTrypanosoma cruzi epimastigotes reveals the presence of microbody-like structures (microperoxisomes) in which 3,3-diaminobenzidine (DAB) is peroxidized to electron-opaque material. The role of peroxidase in DAB peroxidation is supported by the enzyme demonstration in disrupted epimastigotes and the microbody-containing cell fractions.This investigation was supported by grants from Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas (CONICET) and the Special Fund for the Study of Chagas Disease (Subsecretaría de Ciencia y Tecnología de la Nación).     

The effect of a single dose of N-ethyl-N-nitrosourea on the fine structure of the brain of the rat

Résumé Une forte dose de composé carcinogène N-éthyle-N-nitrosourée (ENU) a été injectée à des rats Wistar mâles adultes: des changements ultrastructuraux des cerveaux furent observés. La dégénérescence et la nécrose des oligodendrocytes, l'oedème des astrocytes et l'accroissement du nombre des corps denses dans les cellules gliales ont été les réactions du cerveau à ce stimulus chimique.

A preliminary report on the fine structure of Tripneustes esculentus eggs.

The fine structure of Tripneustes esculentus eggs was studied with the aid of an electron microscope. Cells obtained from this West Indies sea urchin showed cortical granules, mitochondria forming a rosette around lipid granules, endoplasmic reticula, Golgi apparatus and annulated lamellae. These structures appear identical to those seen in eggs of the Atlantic sea urchin: Arbacia punctulata.     

The effect of short term exposures to 100% oxygen on the fine structure of proximal convoluted tubules

Résumé Des rats ont été maintenus dans une athmosphère d'oxygène pur sous une pression de 600 mm de mercure durant des périodes de 3 et 7 jours. Les observations faites au microscope électronique sur les tissus prélevés dans le rein ont montré qu'après 7 jours de traitement les mitochondries et les particules de corps gras ont subi dans la cellule d'importantes modifications. Après 3 jours seulement, on n'observait accun changement de l'ultrastructure.

Zusammenfassung Eine deutliche Vermehrung der Mitochondrienzahl und -grösse in den Herzrmiskelzellen wurde in Hunden durch erzwungenes Schwimmen (rasche und erschöpfende Leistung) festgestellt.     

Fine structural characterization of microbodies and Woronin bodies in Trichophyton mentagrophytes.

Microbodies and Woronin bodies, organelles surrounded by a single unit membrane, were identified in the hyphal cells of Trichophyton mentagrophytes by employing a fixative containing TAPO. The fine structure of the organelles is described and their possible significance discussed.
