Localization of bovine pancreatic polypeptide (BPP)-like immunoreactivity in rat pancreatic monolayer culture

Summary Antiserum to bovine pancreatic polypeptide (BPP) has been used for immunofluorescent staining in the light microscope. With this technique it is possible to detect the presence of specific cells in monolayer culture from neonatal rat pancreas which contain BPP or a closely related peptide.This work was supported by a grant (No. 3.553.75) from the Fonds National Suisse de la Recherche Scientifique. Nuclear pores. can they expand and contract to regulate nucleocytoplasmic exchange?

Summary Recent evidence has revived the idea that translocation of macromolecules between nucleus and cytoplasm may be regulated via expansion and contraction of the entire diameter of the nuclear pore complex. Amnesic effects of intravenous diazepam and lorazepam

Summary The amnesic effects of 2 benzodiazepine drugs, diazepam (Valium) and lorazepam (Ativan), have been investigated. Some of the effects were similar to those of certain clinical amnesic syndromes. The effects were more extensive than previous work has indicated.Acknowledgments. The authors are grateful to Dr J. A fungitoxic principle from the leaves ofLawsonia inermis Lam.

Summary During antifungal screening of higher plants, the leaves ofLawsonia inermis were found to exhibit strong fungitoxicity. On chemical investigation, the antifungal factor was found to be 2-hydroxy-1,4-naphthoquinone (Lawsone). The minimum effective dose against test organism was found to be 1000 ppm. Lawsone was found to exhibit fungicidal activity, wide fungitoxic spectrum and nonphytotoxicity.Acknowledgment. Evidence tha a ‘critical period’ is involved in early estrogen-induced LH- and FSH-release during the estrous cycle in the rat

Summary LH- and FSH-release, which occurred in the afternoon of diestrus 1 following estradiol benzoate administration in the morning of estrus, was completely prevented by pentobarbital, when injected on diestrus 1 at 13.30 h.This investigation was partially financed by the CNRS (ERA 566).Acknowledgments. Anti-endotoxin (anti-lipid-A) antibodies

Summary Anti-lipid-A, anti-endotoxin, antibodies have been measured by a passive haemolysis test using antigen from anE. coli Re mutant. Titres in the normal population are low but do rise in situations in which there has been gram-negative sepsis. Absence of raised titres in other situations has profound implications.We are most grateful to Dr Günter Schmidt of Freiburg for his gift of Lipid-A antigen. We also thank Dr L. Monnens of Nijmegen and Dr T.M. Barratt of London for their sera.     

Selective and reversible modification of essential thiol groups of D-glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase by isothiocyanates

Summary Aralkyl and alkyl isothiocyanates, like aryl isothiocyanates, undergo a selective and reversible reaction with essential thiol groups of D-glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase; the former 2 substances require for a reversible reaction course a more alkaline medium and presence of a thiol.The authors are indebted to Dr J. Effect of seasonal variations and cold acclimation on serum transaminase activity of common Indian frogRana tigrina

Summary A definite seasonal change is observed in 2 transaminases, SGOT and SGPT ofR. tigrina. Cold acclimation significantly depresses transaminase activity of serum.Acknowledgments. Chromsome aberrations in cattle raised on bracken fern pasture

Summary Thirteen cows maintained on natural bracken fern (Pteridium aquilinum) were analyzed cytogenetically. The frequency of structural chromosome aberrations detected in peripheral blood cells was significantly higher when compared to that detected in animals raised on pasture containing no bracken fern. We discuss the clastogenic action of fern and its synergistic action with infection by type 2 and 4 papilloma virus in the same animals.Acknowledgments. We are grateful to Dr F. J. Benesi, Dr J. L. A chromosome study ofScarites occidentalis (Coleoptera,Caraboidea)

Summary Scarites occidentalis has 2n=41 (females 2n=42), n=19+X₁X₂Y. This multiple sex-chromosome system and other karyotypic characteristics suggest that this species andS. buparius share a recent common ancestor in which the sex trivalent was probably originated.Thanks are due to Dr N. Eco-physiological studies onZornia diphylla pers. with reference to adaptive seed dormancy

Summary Seeds ofZornia diphylla possess a complex type of dormancy which is of great survival value for the species. Seeds show polymorphism. The optimum temperature for germination explains the cause of its distribution in the tropics. The grazing and scraping promotes the vegetative growth.The author is grateful to Dr.R. Sahai and Dr.R. The chromosomes ofPasseromyia heterochaeta Villeneuve (Muscidae: Diptera)

Summary The 2 n=10 complement ofPasseromyia heterochaeta Villeneuve consists of 4 pairs of metacentric chromosomes and 1 pair of dots. Nuclear blebs in oocytes of the fishClarias batrachus

Summary Large nuclear blebs have been observed in oocytes of the fish,Clarias batrachus. The bleb, which contains nucleoplasm, is finally extruded from the nucleus. The extruded body is DNase-sensitive, and it implies that some amount of DNA is extruded from the nucleus of these oocytes.Acknowledgments. We are thankful to Dr. R.K. Effects of dopamine antagonists on snail locomotion

Involvement of prolyl endopeptidase in ascidian fertilization

Summary Inhibitory effects on fertilization of the ascidian of three benzyloxycarbonyl(Z)-aminoacyl prolinals and Z-Gly-Pro-chloromethyl ketone added before and after insemination were examined. The results suggest that the prolyl endopeptidase is involved in the process of fertilization, especially in a process taking place between chorion elevation and cell cleavage.Acknowledgment. Evidence for the metabolism of phospholipids and triacylglycerols in humanAscaris lumbricoides

Summary HumanAscaris lumbricoides has the necessary mechanism for the biosynthesis and degradation of phospholipids and triacylglycerols, as in most other species. Piperazine decreases the level of triacylglycerols of this parasite by stimulating the activity of lipase and partially inhibiting the activity of phosphatidate phosphatase.Acknowledgments. Effect of thiamine hydrochloride on the blood level of 2-formyl 1-methyl pyridinium oxime chloride (2-PAM.Cl) in rats

Summary The biological half-life of 2-PAM.Cl was found to increase in female rats pretreated with thiamine hydrochloride (10 mg/kg i.m.). No such effect was observed in the male rats.Dr B.L. Distribution ofγ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in the ganglia ofAplysia kurodai
