Summary A new type of thin-walled, hair-like setae was found on the antennae of the female mosquito. The length of the 3 different types, already described in the literature, is compared with the author's own measurements. Summary The biting edges of the chelae and pereiopods of A. pallipes are made up of individual setae of a specialized structure. In this paper we show that optimal trading results can be achieved if we can forecast a key summary statistic of future prices. Consider the following optimization problem. Let the return ri (over time i=1, 2, ..., n) for the ith day be given and the investor has to make investment decision di on the ith day with di=1 representing a ‘long' position and di=0 a ‘neutral' position. The investment return is given by rni=1ridicΣn+1i=1didi−1∣, where c is the transaction cost. The mathematical programming problem of choosing d1, ..., dn to maximize r under a given transaction cost c is shown to have an analytic solution, which is a function of a key summary statistic called the largest change before reversal. The largest change before reversal is recommended to be used as an output in a neural network for the generation of trading signals. When neural network forecasting is applied to a dataset of Hang Seng Index Futures Contract traded in Hong Kong, it is shown that forecasting the largest change before reversal outperforms the k‐step‐ahead forecast in achieving higher trading profits. Summary After a discussion of the 11-year solar-cycle as regarded from the standpoint of the eruption-hypothesis, which offers a possibility to predict the solar activity for several years and after a review of the magnetic properties of the sun and the sunspots, the paper deals with the new theories of the spots and the solar-cycle as suggested byAlfvén andWalén.The terrestrial effects of the phenomena associated with the solar cycle are classified into 4 groups: effects produced by a) a wave radiationW k emitted continuously by the sun, b) a wave radiationW e emitted from the chromospheric eruptions, c) a particle radiationP k emitted by the so-called M-regions, and d) a particle radiationP e ejected from the eruptions. The connection between the solar eruptions and the radiationsP e ,W e is a well established fact; on the other hand the radiationsW k ,P k could be connected by the author with the solar corona and the stationary solar prominences respectively.To account for the intensity of theW k -radiation a temperature of the solar corona of one million degree is required in agreement with the observed temperature. The heating of the corona occurs in the electric field around an increasing sunspot. As in the corona the mean free path amounts to several kilometers, particles may be accelerated up to 1000 eV, so far the conditionh=0 is fulfilled. Generally speaking acceleration is possible only in such regions whereh andh are not perpendicular to each other.  相似文献

Summary The Pelobatids have a basal karyotype of 26 chromosomes, with 6 pairs of large and 7 of small chromosomes (6+7). From this karyotype, shown byLeptobrachium, Pelobates andScaphiopus, those ofMegophrys andSpea (5+8) may be derived, as well as that ofL. pelodytoides, with only 24 chromosomes.Pelodytes has 24 chromosomes and a karyotype 7+5 differing from that of typical Pelobatids under several respects.Research supported by a contribution from the Italian C. Human organic cation transporter 2 (hOCT2) is involved in the transport of endogenous and exogenous organic cations mainly in cells of the kidney and the brain. Here, we focus on the regulation of hOCT2 by direct protein–protein interaction. Screening within a mating-based split-ubiquitin-yeast-two-hybrid system (mBSUS) revealed the lysosomal-associated protein transmembrane 4 alpha (LAPTM4A) as a potential interacting protein. Interaction of LAPTM4A and hOCT2 was confirmed by pulldown assays, FRET microscopy analysis and immunofluorescence microscopy. Functionally, overexpression of LAPTM4A significantly decreased ASP+ uptake in HEK293 cells stably transfected with hOCT2, suggesting a negative regulation of hOCT2-mediated transport. Furthermore, overexpression of LAPTM4A leads to a significantly decreased hOCT2 plasma membrane expression in surface biotinylation experiments. In addition, significant expression of LAPTM4A in human kidney was demonstrated by immunoblotting and immunofluorescence.  相似文献

Summary Enzyme electrophoretic data show a remarkably high degree of genetic similarity within the European group ofnapi s.l. whereas genetic differences exist at several loci between the European and the North American taxa ofnapi s.l. It is concluded that the European taxa did not differentiate to the species level and form a phylogenetically young group. The North American taxa included in this study are specifically distinct from Europeannapi and separated much earlier. Within these North American taxamarginalis, oleracea andvirginiensis did undergo speciation. The data show a splitting of the genusPieris into three species groups, each genetically differentiated to the same level. The splitting ofPieris into two genera, as suggested by earlier investigators, is not supported here.  相似文献

Genetic analysis of the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans reveals that all dpy-5 alleles are dominant suppressors of bli-4 blistering. Molecular cloning of dpy-5 establishes that it encodes a cuticle procollagen, defects in which are responsible for the short-body, dumpy phenotype. The null mutation, e907 removes the entire coding region, whereas the dpy-5 reference allele, e61, contains a nonsense substitution. RT-PCR analysis and a dpy-5::gfp fusion show that dpy-5 is expressed only in hypodermal cells at all post-embryonic life-cycle stages. Variable expression of dpy-5 in V lineage-derived seam cells suggests an alternative regulatory mechanism in these cells. The dpy-5 gene product contains an Arg-X-X-Arg cleavage motif that could be recognized by a proprotein convertase, such as BLI-4. Mutation of this site cause a dominant dumpy phenotype suggesting Dpy-5 procollagen requires processing for normal cuticle production. Received 13 January 2006; accepted 23 March 2006  相似文献

A forecasting model for yt based on its relationship to exogenous variables (e.g. x?t) must use x?t, the forecast of x?t. An example is given where commercially available x?t's are sufficiently inaccurate that a univariate model for yt appears preferable. For a variety of types of models inclusion of an exogenous variable x?t is shown to worsen the yt forecasts whenever x?t must itself be forecast by x?t and MSE (x?t) > Var (x?t). Tests with forecasts from a variety of sources indicate that, with a few notable exceptions, MSE (x?t) > Var (x?t) is common for macroeconomic forecasts more than a quarter or two ahead. Thus, either:
  • (a) available medium range forecasts for many macroeconomic variables (e.g. the GNP growth rate) are not an improvement over the sample mean (so that such variables are not useful explanatory variables in forecasting models), and/or
  • (b) the suboptimization involved in directly replacing x?t by x?t is a luxury that we cannot afford.

Summary The Robertsonian polymorphism ofPitymys subterraneus involves only 1 pair of metacentric autosomes. The crosses of forms with 52, 53 and 54 chromosomes do not show any differences in their reproductive rate. So a single autosome trivalent does not affect the fecondity. Many hybrids have been obtained betweenP. subterraneus (2N=52 or 54) andP. multiplex (2N=48) with 50 or 51 chromosomes, respectively. Even with a heterogenous karyotype they are not entirely sterile. 2 progeny were produced from back-crosses. The 2 parental species seem to result from recent speciation. Only fecondation or embryogenesis occurs in crossingP. duodecimcostatus withP. subterraneus orP. multiplex. The chromosome complement of 1 hybrid embryo ofP. duodecimcostatus (2N=62)×P. multiplex (2N=48) has been studied showing 55 chromosomes.P. duodecimcostatus appears to belong to a more distant evolutionary group.  相似文献

Summary A racemic intermediate in the total synthesis ofd, l-aldosterone, thed, l-20-oxo-pregnene derivative I, was converted by incubation with a mold hydroxylating in the 21-position into thed-20-oxo-21-hydroxy-pregnene derivative II, whereas thel-antipode of the starting material remained unchanged. This stereospecific microbiological reaction, comprising a separation of racemic modifications, represents the last remaining step in the synthesis of naturald-aldosterone.Other microbiological conversions of racemic steroids, dehydrogenation and hydrogenation, were also shown to proceed only with thed-enantiomer, leaving thel-form of thed, l-substrate intact.The advantages of this new microbiological method for the resolution of racemic modifications during the total synthesis of steroids are discussed.  相似文献

Recent discoveries revealing that carbohydrate modifications play critical roles in a wide variety of biological processes have brought wide recognition to the field of glycobiology. Growing attention has focused on the function of unusual O-linked carbohydrate modifications such as O-fucose. O-fucose modifications have been described in several different protein contexts, including epidermal growth factor-like repeats and thrombospondin type 1 repeats. The O-fucose modifications on thrombospondin type 1 repeats have only recently been described, but the site of modification occurs in a region proposed to play a role in cell adhesion. O-fucose modifications on epidermal growth factor-like repeats have been described as important players in several signal transduction systems. For instance, Notch, a cell-surface signaling receptor required for many developmental events, bears multiple O-fucose saccharides on the epidermal growth factor-like repeat of its extracellular domain. The O-fucose moieties serve as a substrate for the β1,3 N-acetylglucosaminyltransferase activity of Fringe, a known modifier of Notch function. The alteration of O-fucose structures by Fringe influences the ability of Notch ligands to activate the receptor and provides a means to regulate Notch signaling. Thus, O-fucose and Fringe provide a clear example of how carbohydrate modifications can have direct functional consequences on the proteins they modify. RID="*" ID="*"Corresponding author.  相似文献

“The last remnant of physical objectivity of space–time” is disclosed in the case of a continuous family of spatially non-compact models of general relativity (GR). The physical individuation of point-events is furnished by the autonomous degrees of freedom of the gravitational field (viz., the Dirac observables) which represent—as it were—the ontic part of the metric field. The physical role of the epistemic part (viz. the gauge variables) is likewise clarified as embodying the unavoidable non-inertial aspects of GR. At the end the philosophical import of the Hole Argument is substantially weakened and in fact the Argument itself dissolved, while a specific four-dimensional holistic and structuralist view of space–time (called point-structuralism) emerges, including elements common to the tradition of both substantivalism and relationism. The observables of our models undergo real temporal change: this gives new evidence to the fact that statements like the frozen-time character of evolution, as other ontological claims about GR, are model dependent.  相似文献

dng1 is a Dictyostelium homologue of the mammalian tumor suppressor ING gene. DNG1 protein localizes in the nucleus, and has a highly conserved PHD finger domain found in chromatin-remodeling proteins. Both dng1 disruption and overexpression impaired cell proliferation. In dng1-null cells, the progression of differentiation was delayed in a cell-density-dependent manner, and many tiny aggregates were formed. Exogenously applied cAMP pulses reversed the inhibitory effect caused by dng1 disruption on the aggregation during early development, but formation of tiny aggregates was not restored. dng1-overexpressing cells acquired the ability to undergo chemotaxis to cAMP earlier and exhibited enhanced differentiation. These phenotypes were found to be coupled with altered expressions of early genes such as cAMP receptor 1 (car1) and contact site A (csA). Furthermore, disordered histone modifications were demonstrated in dng1-null cells. Summary 4 of the 5 species ofLimnodynastes of theperoni group show 2n=24. Onlysalmini has 2n=22, thus resembling the species ofPlatyplectron (thedorsalis andornatus complexes) which all show 22 chromosomes. This 2nd group also includes species (ornatus) with very low DNA amounts. Summary (1)Ellobius lutescens andMicrotus oregoni show the same type of sex-chromosomes. The diploid number is odd in both sexes, seventeen.(2) The odd element ofEllobius is morphologically alike in the male and in the female. InM. oregoni, the odd element of the male is acrocentric, that of the female metacentric.(3) Following a hypothesis ofWhite, it seems very probable that the heterochromosome of the male is built of the primitiveY (short arm) and the primitiveX (long arm) linked together. In the female of the same species (M. oregoni), the sex-chromosome represents both theX fused together.(4) Only the half of the Zygotes may develope, the other half being lethal.(5) The close kinship betweenEllobius andM. oregoni is certain, a parallel evolution appearing as highly improbable.  相似文献

Summary Traps containing a mixture of attractants forIps typographus also caught other species of bark beetles. The numbers ofPityogenes chalcographus, Pityogenes conjunctus, andTrypodendron lineatum were too high to be interpreted as accidental captures. One important aspect concerning the analysis and forecasting of time series that is sometimes neglected is the relationship between a model and the sampling interval, in particular, when the observation is cumulative over the sampling period. This paper intends to study the temporal aggregation in Bayesian dynamic linear models (DLM). Suppose that a time series Yt is observed at time units t and the observations of the process are aggregated over r units of time, defining a new time series Zkri=1Yrk+i. The relevant factors explaining the variation of Zk can, and in general will, be different, depending on how the sampling interval r is chosen. It is shown that if Yt follows certain dynamic linear models, then the aggregated series can also be described by possibly different DLM. In the examples, the industrial production of Brazil is analysed under various aggregation periods and the results are compared. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献
