Effect of p-nitrophenylglycerol on motility of rat epididymal spermatozoa

Summary Using a convenient capillary tube assay, the antiswarming agent acting onProteus, p-nitrophenylglycerol (PNPG), was found to have produced an antimotility effect in sperms from rat cauda epididymides.Acknowledgment. Survival of bull spermatozoa after exposure to 150 atm N2 for 15 days

Zusammenfassung Bullenspermien überleben in N₂ bei 150 atm und + 6°C gut 8 Tage (bis 14 Tage). In H₂ bei 100 atm und + 6°C nimmt die Überlebensfähigkeit ab. An den Spermien wurden Schäden durch Entwicklung von Gasbläschen bei Drucksenkung beobachtet. Weitere Versuche bei höherem Druck sind in reiner Flüssigkeitsumgebung auszuführen.     

The effects of sodium and amiloride on the motility of the caudal epididymal spermatozoa of the rat

Summary The forward motility of the rat caudal epididymal spermatozoa has been studied in different Na⁺ concentrations. When spermatozoa were suspended in a completely Na⁺-free solution, the forward motility suffered a progressive fall and after 3 h was completely suppressed. This effect was fully reversible on resuspending the spermatozoa in a solution containing Na⁺. Amiloride caused a fall in motility and the effect was similar to that of Na⁺ removal. The inhibition by amiloride of the motility was concentration dependent and the dose response curve showed an IC₅₀-value of about 5×10^–5 M. The role of Na⁺ influx in the maintenance of sperm motility was discussed.This work was supported by the World Health Organization.The technical assistance of Mr C.M. Metabolism of amphibian spermatozoa in relation to their motility

Summary Bufo arenarum spermatozoa were able to sustain motility both under aerobic and anaerobic conditions. In aerobiosis, the oxygen consumption varies between 2.6 and 4.2 l O₂/10⁸ cells/h at 30°C. Summary Differences in the sounds of 4 species of tsetse flies have been demonstrated. It has also been shown that tsetse flies perceive and react to sounds made by other members of the species.     

Cellularity and composition of epididymal adipose tissue from cold-acclimatized rats

Summary Cold acclimatization induces morphological and compositional modifications of rat epididymal adipose tissue: a decrease in fat cell size, an increase of fat cell number per g of tissue, but no significant increase in total fat cell number in the tissue; finally, an increase in protein content and a decrease in triglyceride content.Acknowledgments.
