The trail and alarm pheromones of the ant,Pristomyrmex pungens Mayr

Summary The trail and alarm pheromones of P. pungens were investigated. The nine fatty acids (C₁₄₀, C₁₆₀, C₁₆₁, C₁₈₀, C₁₈₁, C₁₈₂, C₁₈₃, C₂₀₄, C₂₀₅) were the components of the trail pheromone, while the alarm pheromone was found to be the mixture of 4 monoterpene hydrocarbons (-pinene, camphene, -pinene, limonene).The authors are indebted to Dr Masao Kubota for identification of the ant.

Circadian periodicity in termination of photorefractoriness in the yellow-throated sparrow

Summary Photorefractory male yellow-throated sparrows (Gymnorhis xanthocollis) were subjected to six resonance light cycles, consisting of 6 h basic photophase coupled with scotophases of longer durations (in cycles of 12 (6L6D) h, 24 (6L18D) h, 36 (6L30D) h, 48 (6L42D) h, 60 (6L54D) h and 72 (6L66D) h). Termination of photorefractoriness was evident in cycles of 24, 48 and 72 h, but not in 12, 36 and 60 h. The results are consistent with the external-coincidence model (Bünning hypothesis) and suggest that endogenous circadian rhythmicity is involved in the termination of photorefractoriness.To whom reprint requests should be addressed.This investigation was supported by a UGC grant to PDT and BHU to PMT.

Effect of photoperiod and all-female grouping on the estrous cycle of the bandicoot rat,Bandicota bengalensis

Summary Female bandicoot rats showing irregular cycles in 12L12D, were exposed to light-darkness cycles of 1L23D, 4L20D and 8L16D. Significant regularization of the estrous cycle was observed in 8L16D with most of the rats exhibiting a regular 3-day cycle and the regularity was further enhanced by all-female grouping (4/cage).     

Involvement of circadian system in photoperiodic control of pubertal development in female deer mice,Peromyscus maniculatus

Summary Pubertal development in female deer mice,Peromyscus maniculatus, was stimulated by exposure to light cycles of LD 168, LD 630 or LD 654, but not by exposure to cycles of LD 618 or LD 642. The “day of Brahman” in the work of Āryabhata

Summary In the astronomical treatise ryabhatya of ryabhata several verses are interpolated, namely all those verses in which either Brahman was mentioned or extremely large periods were introduced. The interpolator was known to AlBrn as ryabhata of Kusumapura, who belongs to the school of the elder ryabhata. The aim of the interpolator was to bring the teaching of the elder ryabhata into accordance with the revelation of Svayambh. Svayambh is another name for Brahm.

Unique occurrence of fenchol in the animal kingdom

Summary (–)--Fenchol, a compound occurring in plants but not heretofore reported to occur in an animal product, was isolated from volatiles released by adult male Mediterranean fruit flies,Ceratitis capitata Wiedemann, with the male's previously identified sex pheromones. Zusammenfassung Die Bildung von Oxytocin-Dimer (+), einem Nebenprodukt der Oxytocin-Synthese, wird verringert durch Ausschluss atmosphärischen Sauerstoffes während der Zyklisation von Oxytocein zu Oxytocin. Das Gleichgewichtsverhältnis von Monomer zu Dimer wird durchschnittlich von 41 auf 111 verbessert.

Summary Complex sugar mixtures can be separated and identified by twodimensional thin-layer chromatography using borate-impregnated silica gel G/kieselguhr G as carrier material. The separation of the solvent mixtureiso-butanol/glacial acetic acid/water (541) during chromatography in the first dimension and the subsequent intermediate drying cause a polyzonal (graduated in zones) activation of the sorption layer. In this way, the critical sugar mixtures in one-dimensional thin-layer chromatography can be separated in the second dimension using the solvent system propanol/water (8.51.5) orn-propanol/dimethyl sulphoxide/water (8.60.50.9).

Summary In this note we claim that the two words and , which were used in Greece to indicate the geometrical point, had both been introduced in the scientific language in the first half of the IV^th century B.C., and that they became popular independently of each other in two different cultural circles, those of philosophy and of mathematics, respectively.We propose therefore, in contrast to a conjecture by Heiberg, a new explanation for the predominance of during the golden age of Greek mathematics and for the resurgence of during the period of decadence.
