The relative roles of conflicting zeitgebers [presence/absence (PA) cycles versus light/dark (LD) cycles] on entrainment of circadian rhythm of locomotor activity were tested in pups of the night active mouse Mus booduga. During the early days of the pups' life the PA cycles of the mother acted as a zeitgeber and entrained their activity rhythm, even though the LD cycles were available. Entrainment by LD cycles took place only when the pups' eyes opened and probably became functional.  相似文献

Summary 1212-h cycles of presence and absence of mother mouse act as a zeitgeber and entrain the circadian rhythm of locomotor activity in the pups ofMus booduga under continuous darkness or continuous dim light. Summary Oxygen consumption of gill, brain and muscle tissues ofChanna striatus exhibits a clearcut circadian rhythm with a maximum uptake at 18.00 h. Metasystox exposure decreased the oxygen consumption of all tissues. Maximum reduction is noted in gill followed by brain and muscle. Summary Three closely related species of short-tailed mice (Mus musculus musculus, M. spretoides andM. spicilegus) were tentatively discriminated using immunological techniques based on albumin cross-reactivity. Different fractionations of crude albumin antisera allowed the recovery of antibody populations specific to theM. m. musculus albumin, whereas antibody population differences do not seem to exist betweenM. spicilegus andM. spretoides. Moreover, immunoreactivities tested with native and S-carboxymethylated albumins revealed that species-specific antibodies correspond to antigenic determinants depending on the amino acid sequence (sequential determinants). The observed immunological differences are related to species divergence and albumin sequences.  相似文献

Summary Under conditions of constant darkness, rhabdom volume and the amount of visual pigment chromophore show circadian changes in the compound eye of the crabHemigrapsus sanguineus. Vitamin B12 (methylcobalamine) was administered orally (3 mg/day) to 9 healthy subjects for 4 weeks. Nocturnal melatonin levels after exposure to bright light (ca. 2500 lx) were determined, as well as the levels of plasma melatonin over 24 h. The timing of sleep was also recorded. Vitamin B12 was given blind to the subjects and crossed over with placebo. We found that the 24-h melatlonin rhythm was significantly phase-advanced (1.1. h) in the vitamin B12 trial as compared with that in the placebo trial. In addition, the 24-h mean of plasma melatonin level was much lower in the vitamin B12 traial than with the placebo. Furthermore, the nocturnal melatonin levels during bright light exposure were significantly lower in the vitamin B12 trial than with the placebo. On the other hand, vitamin B12 did not affect the timing of sleep. These findings raise the possibility that vitamin B12 phase-advances the human circadian rhythm by increasing the light sensitivity of the circadian clock.  相似文献

A melatonin rhythm was observed in the pineals of 18-day-old chick embryos incubated under a light-dark regime of 186 h. A low pineal melatonin content was found during the light phase of the day. Concentrations started to increase 2 h after dark onset and reached maximum levels after 4 h of darkness. The amplitude of the pineal melatonin rhythm increased considerably after 2 days and night-time concentrations in 20-day-old embryos were more than 5 times higher than in 18-day-old ones. Significant day/night differences in melatonin production were found both in pineals and eyes. Exposure of eggs to 1 h of light during the dark period decreased the high melatonin concentrations in the eyes but not in the pineals of the 20-day-old chick embryo. The results suggest that in this precocial bird at least part of the circadian system may already operate during embryonic life.  相似文献

Summary The crab (Oziotelphusa) displays a diurnal rhythm of acetylcholinesterase activity, with maximal activity around midnight, alternating with minimal activity at noon. Summary Tyrosine aminotransferase activity ofEuglena oscillates with an ultradian period of approximately 4–5 h. The oscillation frequency in the time series was determined by cosine fitting. Experiments which were performed between 16 and 31.5°C revealed temperature compensation.  相似文献

Summary The circadian clock in the unicellular algaGonyaulax polyedra is accelerated by a substance in extracts from the cells themselves. The extracts have been fractionated using the circadian rhythm of bioluminescence as bioassay. The active substance, termed gonyauline, has been isolated and characterized as a novel low molecular weight cyclopropanecarboxylic acid (S-methyl-cis-2-(methylthio) cyclopropanecarboxylic acid). Synthetic gonyauline has a similar shortening effect on the period of the circadian clock.  相似文献

Endomannosidase is a Golgi-localized endoglycosidase, which provides an alternate glucosidase-independent pathway of glucose trimming. Using a protease protection assay we demonstrated that Golgi-endomannosidase is a type II membrane protein. The first 25 amino acids of this protein, containing the cytoplasmic tail and the transmembrane domain, were sufficient for Golgi retention of fused reporter proteins alpha1-antitrypsin or green fluorescent protein. However, shortening or deletion of the transmembrane domain prevented Golgi localization, while lengthening it partially reduced Golgi retention of the enzyme. Substitution of the highly conserved positively charged amino acids within the cytoplasmic tail had neither an effect on type II topology nor on the inherent Golgi localization of the enzyme. In contrast, cytoplasmic tail-deleted rat endomannosidase possessed an inverted topology resulting in endoplasmic reticulum mislocalization. Thus, proper topology rather than the presence of positively charged amino acids in the cytoplasmic tail is critical for Golgi localization of rat endomannosidase.  相似文献

Summary The effects of exposure to sudden transitions from dark to light (D/L) and light to dark (L/D) were determined on the free running circadian feding rhythm of European stalings (Sturnus vulgaris). D/L transitions (step-up) produced phase advances throughout the circadian cycle. In contrast L/D transitions (step-down) produced both advances and delays. The L/D transition phase-response curve has a contour and shape similar to the phase-response curves previously obtained in birds with light pulses.  相似文献

Summary Resonance experiments for photoperiodic termination of pupal diapause demonstrated thatPieris brassicae uses a night-measuring hour-glass mechanism. In previous work the same resonance technique for diapause induction revealed that photoperiodic time-measurement is a function of the circadian system. For the first time in a living organism it has been shown that the biological clock operates by means of an oscillator for photoperiodic onset of a phenomenon and according to an hour-glass system for photoperiodic termination.  相似文献

Summary Biosynthesis of linoleic acid, 182(n–6), was unambiguously demonstrated to occur in the cockroach,Periplaneta americana, and the cricket,Acheta domesticus. Axenic tissue from both of these insect species was demonstrated by radio-gas-liquid chromatography (radio-GLC) and radio-high-performance liquid chromatography (radio-HPLC) to incorporate [1-14C]acetate and [1-14C]oleate into this essential fatty acid.This work was supported by the National Science Foundation under grant DCB-8914417. Summary During diapause O2 consumption in fly pupae is a cyclic event (4-day periodicity at 25°C) driven by cycles of juvenile hormone activity.
