Summary Antibodies against hyperglycemic hormone (CHH) ofCarcinus were raised in rabbits by injection of extract from sinus glands which contain high concentrations of CHH. Evidence for an unusual multifunctional protoreceptor in hormone action

The mechanism of external pancreatic secretion

Zusammenfassung Gegenwärtig vorliegenden Daten gemäss kann der Mechanismus der äusseren Sekretion der Bauchspiecheldrüsen am besten durch die Hypothese erklärt werden, dass zuerst eine bikarbonatreiche Lösung gebildet wird, die dann auf dem Weg durch die Gänge der Bauchspeicheldrüse mit dem extrazellulären Chlorid ausgetauscht wird. Die Wände der Gänge wirken als eine anionendurchlässige Membrane.     

Effect of pancreatic secretions upon ileal disaccharidase activities of neonatal miniature pigs

Mechanisms by which pancreatic secretions influence disaccharidase activities in the distal small intestine have been investigated in 1-week-old miniature pigs. Using a combination of biochemical, cytochemical and morphological techniques it has been found that the decrease in lactase specific activity is due solely to a reduction in villus surface area. By contrast, the increased sucrase-isomaltase activities, which occur despite the reduction in villus surface area, are due entirely to increased enzyme expression during enterocyte differentiation.

Interaction of vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) with cholinergic stimulation of glucagon secretion

Summary VIP-containing nerve fibers as well as cholinergic nerve fibers have a ubiquitous distribution in the body and both types of nerves have been demonstrated to innervate the pancreatic islets. The present study shows, in the intact, conscious mouse, that VIP and the cholinergic agonist carbachol stimulate glucagon secretion in a dose-dependent manner. Furthermore VIP and carbachol were found to exert potentiating interactions on glucagon secretion. These results suggest the existence of an interactive neural regulation of glucagon secretion, exerted by acetylcholine and VIP.We thank Professor V. Distribution of thyrotropin releasing hormone (TRH), alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (alpha-MSH) and somatostatin in the skin of the green frog (Rana esculenta)]

High concentrations of Thyrotrophin-Releasing Hormone (TRH) have been found in the dorsal skin of the Frog Rana esculenta, lower levels being measured in the ventral skin. alpha-MSH and somatostatin were undetectable in these tissues. Nor was TRH detected in the blood of these animals. The concentration of somatostatin in the pancreas was similar to that of the hypothalamus and twice or one hundred times higher than in the intestine or stomach respectively.     

The role of amino-acids in inducing hormone secretion

Zusammenfassung Beim Menschen und in Tierversuchen wurde nachgewiesen, dass Eiweiss und verschiedene Aminosäuren Eosinopenie, Blutzuckererhöhung, Ascorbinsäure-Verminderung in den Nebennieren verursachen und bei infantilen weiblichen Ratten gonadotrope Wirkung ausüben. Es wird angenommen, dass die Aminosäuren der Nahrung einen physiologischen Impuls der Hormonsekretion darstellen und dass die spezifisch-dynamische Wirkung der Nährstoffe mit den obigen Befunden erklärlich ist.     

Effect of anaesthesia on growth hormone secretion in the domestic fowl (Gallus domesticus)

Summary Chloral hydrate, Equithesin, Althesin, Rompun, Sagatal and ether anaesthesia lowered the concentration of plasma growth hormone in immature cockerels. Handling and serial bleeding of the conscious controls had no effect on the growth hormone concentration.     

Coexistence of neoteny and an internal cycle a polystomatid (Monogenea)]

Metapolystoma cachani a parasite of Ptychadena longirostris (Peters) has been discovered in the Ivory coast. Its life cycle is the first to involve both the possibility of an internal cycle in the bladder of the adult Amphibian and a neotenical reproduction on the gills of the Tadpole. This double process is the link between the Monogeneans which are only parasites of aquatic hosts and those which are adapted to terrestrial hosts. Its place is therefore essential in the phylogeny of Polystomatidae.

Comparison of the time courses of luteinizing hormone (LH) secretion rates during continuous stimulation by LH-releasing hormone (LH-RH) in vivo and in vitro

Summary The patterns of LH secretion during constant stimulation of the pituitary glands of estradiol-treated ovariectomized rats with a maximally stimulating amount of LH-RH in vivo and in vitro correspond with each other qualitatively and quantitatively. In vitro the changes with time of the LH secretion rate are somewhat retarded, especially the occurrence of desensitization.

The role of kinesin, dynein and microtubules in pancreatic secretion

The regulated secretion of pancreatic zymogens depends on a functional cytoskeleton and intracellular vesicle transport. To study the dynamics of tubulin and its motor proteins dynein and kinesin during secretion in pancreatic acinar cells, we infused rats with 0.1 μg/kg/h caerulein. Electron and fluorescence microscopy detected neither dynein nor kinesin at the apical secretory pole, nor on the surface of mature zymogen granules. After 30 min of secretagogue stimulation, kinesin and the Golgi marker protein 58 K were reallocated towards the apical plasma membrane and association of kinesin with tubulin was enhanced. Disruption of acinar cell microtubules had no effect on initial caerulein-induced amylase release but completely blocked secretion during a second stimulus. Our results suggest that mature zymogen granule exocytosis is independent of intact microtubules, kinesin and dynein. However, microtubule-dependent mechanisms seem to be important for the replenishment of secretory vesicles by redistribution of Golgi elements towards the apical cell pole. J. From the kinetic study of the effects of one single growth hormone (GH) injection on the phosphate metabolism, it appears that the influence of GH on the serum phosphate level is biphasic: a decrease is followed by an increase. Conversely GH leads to an early decrease of the urinary phosphate excretion.     

Evidence for the presence of biogenic amines in pancreatic islets

Zusammenfassung Mit neuer empfindlicher Fluoreszenzmethode wird das Vorhandensein biogener Amine in Langerhansschen Inselzellen von Ente, Meerschweinchen, Katze, Hund und Pferd sehr wahrscheinlich gemacht. Bei der Ente konnten die fluoreszierenden Inselzellen als ₁- und ₂-Zellen identifiziert werden.
