Serum phosphoglucomutase activity in human virus hepatitis

Riassunto Nell'epatite virale umana acuta l'attività fosfoglicomutasica del siero è notevolemente aumentata rispetto ai valori normali.L'aggiunta di omogenato bollito di fegato di topo produce ulteriore notevole incremento dell'attività fosfoglicomutasica del siero di soggetti affetti da epatite epidemica; non influenza tale attività nel siero di soggetti normali.     

Distribution of chlorophyllase activity and levels of chlorophylls a and b in sandal (Santalum album L.) affected by spike disease

Summary Compared to healthy specimens, the levels of chlorophylls a and b and the activity of chlorophyllase towards the two pigments remained lower in the leaves of spiked sandal at all stages of leaf development, except in the senescing diseased leaves where the chlorophyllase activity showed a steep rise.     

Nervous activity of the frog's epiphysis cerebri in relation to illumination

Zusammenfassung Die proximale Anlage des lichtempfindlichen Pinealorgans adulter Anuren zeigt eine Daueraktivität, die durch Belichtung gehemmt wird. Die mit Hilfe von Stahlmikroelektroden bestimmte absolute Schwelle einzelner Neurone des Organs liegt zwischen 10^–5 und 10^–6 lm/m². Bei Belichtung vermindert sich die Impulsfrequenz der Daueraktivität linear mit dem Logarithmus der Beleuchtungsstärke. Der Halbwert der Entladungsfrequenz liegt bei 10^–2 lm/m². Oberhalb 10 lm/m² ist keine Impulsaktivität zu beobachten.     

Dynamics of phosphoglucomutase heat sensitivity polymorphism in Culicidae

Summary In 6 species of mosquitoes of the generaAedes andCuliseta (Culicidae, Diptera) the frequency of phosphoglucomutase (PGM) heat sensitivity alleles is inversely correlated with the temperature of the environment where larvae develop. These data suggest that different selective values are associated with the PGM thermoresistant and thermosensitive genotypes in the different habitats.We thank Dr M. Peroxidase activity and thiocyanate accumulation in salivary glands

Summary Salivary glands with high, low, or no peroxidase activity do not differ in [S¹⁴CN^–] after the i.v. injection of KS¹⁴CN, nor do the glands differ from blood and muscle in [S¹⁴CN^–]. The content of SCN^– in a salivary gland does not mirror the gland's participation in the peroxidase-mediated antimicrobial mechanism.     

Mycoplasma-like organisms in histological sections of infected sandal spike (Santalum album L.)

Résumé Une méthode simple est décrite pour l'étude radioscopique des tissus du bois de Santal (Santalum album L.) infectés par un organisme du type dit mycoplasme. Les techniques comprennent au préalable l'emploi de colorants Giemsa et Dienes, précédant l'étude microscopique. Des organismes du type dit mycoplasme et (ou) des inclusions cytoplasmiques d'origne mycoplasmique ont été localisées dans les tissues contaminés du bois de Santal, surtout dans les régions du xylème et du phloème.     

Multiple phosphoglucomutase alleles in two species of Mansonia mosquito

Multiple phosphoglucomutase (E.C.2.7.5.1) alleles are found in the mosquitoes Mansonia crassipes and M. uniformis. The present study reveals 4 Pgm alleles, of which Pgm(B) and Pgm(C) are common to both species while Pgm(A) is present only in M. crassipes and Pgm(D) only in M uniformis. The frequencies in both species accord well with Hardy-Weinberg expectations. The most frequent allele is that controlling a phenotype with an intermediate electrophoretic mobility, viz Pgm(B) in M. crassipes and Pgm(C) in M. Uniformis.     

Alkaline phosphatase activity in relation to DNA synthesis in synchronized hela S3 cells

Zusammenfassung In synchronisierten HeLa S3-Zellen wurde die Aktivität der alkalischen Phosphatase in Bezug auf den Zellteilungszyklus untersucht. Die geringste Aktivität wurde während der S-Phase und die höchste beim Minimum der DNS-Syntheseaktivität festgestellt, und es wird angenommen, dass die alkalische Phosphatase als Transphosphorylase zur Regulation der Polgrösse von Nucleotiden dient.

Neuronal accumulation and metabolism of3H-1-norepinephrine in rat portal vein: Evidence in relation to possible uneven alpha receptor distribution

Summary The rate of accumulation and metabolism of³H-1-norepinephrine in the neuronal plexus of rat portal vein produces a small transmitter concentration gradient across the longitudinal smooth muscle layer which cannot account for the prejunctional supersensitivity observed and suggests localization of the alpha-adrenergic receptors adjacent to the nerve plexus.Acknowledgment. IAA oxidase activity in relation to adventitious root formation on stem cuttings of some forest tree species

Summary IAA oxixase activity was very high in stem cuttings ofSalix tetrasperma andPopulus robusta, which rooted profusely, less in stem cuttings ofHibiscus rosa sinensis which rooted less, and insignificant in those ofEucalyptus citriodora which did not root at all. Protein(s) extracted from the stem cuttings ofE. citriodora inhibited the activity of IAA oxidase as well as root formation on hypocotyl cuttings ofPhaseolus mungo. The possibility of involvement of IAA oxidase activity in the process of adventitious root formation is discussed.The research has been financed by a grant from U.S. Department of Agriculture.
