Summary There is no absolute parallelism between organ noradrenaline content and organ weight in the male sex accessories during normal development or following regression after castration.     

Chiral influence of sex pheromonal substances on responses of the male American cockroach

Summary In order to elucidate the roles of optical enantiomers of sex pheromonal substances of the American cockroach, behavioral assays with a single enantiomer and with mixtures of enantiomers of sex pheromone mimics were carried out. Inactive enantiomers [(–)-enantiomers] had no influence on the potency of enantiomers active as sex pheromones [(+)-enantiomers]. By analysis of the results from EAG recordings with single and mixed sample of the enantiomers, it was confirmed that (–)-enantiomers did not react with the sex pheromone receptors which are responsive to (+)-enantiomers.We acknowledge technical assistance from Miss R. Carotid chemoreceptor influence on the cardiac sympathetic nerve discharge.

Pure stimulation of carotid chemoreceptors induces, as a primary effect, the general spontaneous activation of both the cardioexcitatory and the cardioinhibitory medullary centres. These effects have been shown by keeping constant those parameters which, when modified, produced secondary effects hiding the investigated primary ones.     

The influence of ingested fluoride on the ascorbic acid concentration in guinea-pig tissues

Summary Fluoride added to drinking water at concentrations of 50 and 70 ppm provided highly significant increases in the ascorbic acid concentration in tissues but was without effect on the serum alkaline phosphatase and cholesterol.JEWD was supported by a Beecham Products grant.

Distribution of contractile proteins and adrenergic nerves in the adrenal gland of guinea-pig, rat and ox as revealed by immunofluorescence and the glyoxylic acid technique.

Myosin and actin were localized in the adrenal gland, using antibodies against these proteins which were isolated from chicken gizzard. Myosin and actin were preferentially located in vascular walls including endothelial cells and in the capsule. In rat and guinea-pig adrenal cortex, the amount of contractile elements in vascular walls corresponded well to the density of adrenergic nerves as revealed with the glyoxylic acid method.

Zusammenfassung Eine Verringerung der extrazellulären Kaliumkonzentration im Bereich zwischen 9,6 und 2,4 mM führt zu einer Zunahme der positiv inotropen Glykosidwirkung am Meerschweinchenpapillarmuskel; die Wirkung des Adrenalins wird nicht beeinflusst. Die Vergrösserung der inotropen Wirkung geht parallel einer starken Zunahme der Verkürzung der Aktionspotentialdauer, besonders in Höhe des Plateaus (30% Repolarisation).     

In vivo effects of Escherichia coli endotoxin on sulfobromophthalein clearance in the guinea-pig.

In vivo studies indicated that the primary effects of E. coli endotoxin on hepatic clearance of sulfobromophthalein were at the excretory level. Newborns were more sensitive to the LPS than older animals.     

Effect of different bathing media on the short-circuit current across the intestine of the rat and guinea-pig.

The changes in short-circuit current occurring when one or both solutions bathing the intestine of rat or guinea-pig mounted in flux chambers were recorded. The results with the guinea-pig can be explained in terms of diffusion potentials arising from the ionic replacements, and an electrogenic sodium pump, sensitive to ouabain, in the contraluminal membrane of the cell. In the rat, the situation is more complicated, and the enterocyte probably possesses an electrogenic sodium pump in the brush-border membrane.     

Effects of alpha- and beta-adrenergic blockers on the actions of noradrenaline on body temperature in the newborn guinea-pig.

The effect of NA injected into the lateral cerebral ventricle on Tc was blocked by alpha-adrenergic receptor blockers, but not by beta-receptor blockers, whereas the effect of systemically administered NA was blocked by i.p. administered beta-receptor blockers, but not by alpha-blockers.     

Effects of lithium chloride on peripheral acetylcholine release and brain acetylcholine levels in the guinea-pig.

Lithium chloride administered acutely or chronically to guinea-pigs had no effect on brain level of acetylcholine or on peripheral release of acetylcholine from longitudinal muscle of the ileum. The results suggest differences between in vitro and in vivo action of lithium.
