Complex continued fractions: early work of the brothers Adolf and Julius Hurwitz

The two brothers Julius and Adolf Hurwitz were born in the middle of the nineteenth century in a small town near Hanover (not far from Göttingen). Already during their schooldays, the two of them became acquainted with mathematical problems and both started to study mathematics, but while the younger brother Adolf turned out to be extremely successful in his research, the elder brother and his work seem to be almost forgotten. This paper examines the lives and works of the two brothers with particular emphasis on the contributions of Julius Hurwitz, and the subsequent reception of their research. It deals with the development of an arithmetical theory for complex continued fractions by Julius and Adolf Hurwitz around 1890 and its rediscovery in the twentieth century.

Relationships between Australian real estate and stock market prices—a case of market inefficiency

This paper explores the relationship between the Australian real estate and equity market between 1980 and 1999. The results from this study show three specific outcomes that extend the current literature on real estate finance. First, it is shown that structural shifts in stock and property markets can lead to the emergence of an unstable linear relationship between these markets. That is, full‐sample results support bi‐directional Granger causality between equity and real estate returns, whereas when sub‐samples are chosen that account for structural shifts the results generally show that changes within stock market prices influence real estate market returns, but not vice versa. Second, the results also indicate that non‐linear causality tests show a strong unidirectional relationship running from the stock market to the real estate market. Finally, from this empirical evidence a trading strategy is developed which offers superior performance when compared to adopting a passive strategy for investing in Australian securitized property. These results appear to have important implications for managing property assets in the funds management industry and also for the pricing efficiency within the Australian property market. The relation between the bicarbonate concentration in blood plasma and in brain tissue

Zusammenfassung Die Frage des passiven Transportes von HCO ₃ ^– - und H⁺-Ionen zwischen Blutplasma und Gehirngewebe wurde untersucht. Die Blutkonzentration dieser Ionen wurde durch intraperitoneale Injektionen variiert und der Gesamt-CO₂-Gehalt des Gehirngewebes nach 1–12 h bestimmt. Es ergab sich keine signifikante Änderung im Gesamt-CO₂-Gehalt des Gewebes, obwohl der Standardbikarbonatgehalt des Blutes mit 10–13 mE/l verändert wurde.

The majority of these cells were characterized by a close association with the capillary network. On a family of finite moving‐average trend filters for the ends of series

A family of finite end filters is constructed using a minimum revisions criterion and based on a local dynamic model operating within the span of a given finite central filter. These end filters are equivalent to evaluating the central filter with unavailable future observations replaced by constrained optimal linear predictions. Two prediction methods are considered: best linear unbiased prediction and best linear biased prediction where the bias is time invariant. The properties of these end filters are determined. In particular, they are compared to X‐11 end filters and to the case where the central filter is evaluated with unavailable future observations predicted by global ARIMA models as in X‐11‐ARIMA or X‐12‐ARIMA.
