Chromosomal homology in southern Akodon

Summary Differential staining (G and C) of southern South AmericanAkodon are presented.A. olivaceus, A. longipilis andA. sanborni all have the same karyotype (2n=52, NF=58). A virtually identical band sequence is observed. This situation is interpreted using the canalization model of chromosomal evolution which stresses an optimum karyotype for each adaptive zone. Despite the high degree of conservation of the chromosome structures, the specific status of these species is supported by maintenance of distinctness when they occur in areas of sympatry.The research was partially supported by Proyecto de Investigación I-78-86, Dirección de Investigación, Universidad Austral de Chile and Programa Especial de Citogenética, U. de Chile sede Norte, Santiago, Chile.     

Fluorinated analogs of insect sex pheromones

Summary The syntheses of fluorinated mimics of pheromones ofSpodoptera littoralis, Diparopsis castanea, Laspeyresia pomonella, Bombyx mori andThaumetopoea pityocampa are described. Inhibition of mammalian acetylcholinesterase by phenylmethanesulfonyl fluoride

Resumen El fenilmentano sulfonil fluoro (FMSF) 4×10^–5 M inhibe a la acetilcolinesterasa (E. C. 3.1.1.7) de cerebro de rata en más de 50%, y 9×10^–4 M más de 90%. La constante de reacción inhibidor enzima es de 4.7×10² (1 mol^–1 min^–1). La colinesterasa (E. C. 3.1.1.8) de cerebro de rata es insensible a FMSF.

Summary 3 different karyotypes are described in the Chilean frog,Eupsophus roseus, which could be an unnatural assemblage of species. Effect of colchicine on long lasting synaptic modifications induced by hyperactivity

Resumen La facilitación de transmisión sináptica en un ganglio de cucaracha se puede inducir mediante hiperuso de reflejos anti-gravitatorios. La inyección intraganglionar de colchicina inhibe reversiblemente la modificación sináptica sin alterar la conducción nerviosa. Este resultado puede explicarse considerando que la colchicina bloquea el proceso de progresión axoplasmática.

Differential effect of silybin on the Fe2+-ADP and t-butyl hydroperoxide-induced microsomal lipid peroxidation

Summary We have observed a differential effect of silybin dihemisuccinate on rat liver microsonal oxygen consumption and on lipid peroxidation induced by NADPH-Fe²⁺-ADP and t-butyl hydroperoxide. These results are ascribed to the antioxidant properties of the flavonoid. The differences observed in the effect of the catalysts may be a consequence of the different capacity of silybin to act as a scavenger of free radicals formed by NADPH-Fe²⁺-ADP or t-butyl hydroperoxide.This research was supported in part by grant B-2019-8412 from Dirección de Investigación y Bibliotecas, Universidad de Chile.     

Chromosomes of South American Bufonidae (Amphibia anura)

Resumen Se estudiaron los cariotipos de ocho especies de Bufonidae sudamericanos:B. arenarum, B. ictericus ictericus, B. paracnemis, B. marinus, B. crucifer, B. granulosus d'orbignyi, B. granulosus fernandezae andB. spinulosus. En todas las especies se encontraron 2n = 22 chromosomas. No se encontró en el macho, ningun par heteromórfico, ni bivalente con caracteristicas y comportamiento que indicara la presencia de cromosomas sexuales.     

Interaction of cocaine and iproniazid on the H3-norepinephrine uptake mechanism on isolated strip ventricle of frog heart

Resumen En ventriculo aislado deRana pipiens, la cocaina bloquea potentemente la incorporación de H³-norepinefrina. La iproniacida, a su vez, se muestra también como bloqueante de la incorporación y/o retención de H³-NE en la misma preparación farmacologica. Se sugieren unas hipotesis para explicar los resultados obtenidos.     

Distribution of histamine in 7 brain regions in different species and strains of mammals

Resumen En las especies estudiadas el hipotálamo es la región mas rica en histamina (HT). En la rata, la mayor proporción de HT se localiza en el sedimento de los homogenizados en medio isotónico centrifugados a 10⁵×g; la proporción de HT en el sedimento varia ampliamente de una región a otra.     

The evolutionary history ofDrosophila buzzatii. V. Differential survivorship onOpuntia betweenD. buzzatii andD. serido

Summary Survival time ofDrosophila buzzatii adults on anOpuntia (prickly pear) medium was significantly longer than that of its nearest relativeD. serido. A significant difference was also found betweenD. buzzatii adults from two experimental populations, one of them fed onOpuntia rots for more than two years and another one kept on standardDrosophila medium for the same period of time. Characterization of the estrogen receptors in the uterine and blood eosinophil leukocytes

Summary Estrogen receptors are found in the rat uterine and in the eosinophil-rich human blood leukocyte 24,000g fractions, but not in the low-eosinophil count human blood leukocyte 24,000g fraction. The total number of binding sites per blood eosinophil leukocyte is 7,400 sites per cell, and theK _d =5.6×10^–10 M.Acknowledgments. Effect of sulpiride on oxygen uptake by rat's brain tissue in vitro

Resumen El Sulpiride in vitro a la concentración de 1×10^–2 M disminuye el consumo de Oxígeno en cortes de cerebro de rata. El exceso de potasio o ausencia de calcio en el medio de incubación, no modifican este efecto. En homogeneizado de cerebro total, unicamente a la concentración de 1×10^–2 M deprime el consumo de oxígeno. A las concentraciones 1×10^–3 y 1×10^–4 M no modifica el consumo de oxígeno en cortes ni homogeneizados de cerebro.     

Narciclasine,an inhibitor of protein synthesis. Action onAllium cepa L. root meristems

Summary Shortening of nucleologenesis time in a synchronous cell population, labelled as binucleate, by a caffeine pulse and fall in frequency of prophases are related to narciclasine inhibition of protein synthesis inAllium cepa L. meristems.Acknowledgments. A quantitative analysis of cleistothecia production inAspergillus nidulans

Resumen Cruzamiento dialélico entre seis cepas del hongo filamentosoAspergillus nidulans fué analizado estadísticamente por le método sugerido porGriffing ⁹ visando establecer los valores de la capacidad general de combinacion y de la capacidad específica de combinación para la cantidad de cleistotécios. Los resultados obtenidos parecen indicar la participación de genes que exhiben effectos aditivos y dominantes. Es sugerido que el método puede ser aplicado en el analisis de otras características incluyendo aquellas de valor económico como producción de antibióticos.     

Neonatal masculinization affects maternal behavior sensitivity in female rats

Summary The present results indicate that maternal behavior in adult neonatally androgenized female rats is significantly diminished when compared to females at oestrus and intact males. Adaptation by natural selection in populations ofDrosophila pseudoobscura

Resumen Seis poblaciones deDrosophila pseudoobscura han evolucionado, debido a la selección natural, hacia una mayor adaptación al ambiente. Durante 20 o 25 generaciones el número de individuos nacidos por unidad de comida y el tamano de la poblacion han aumentado gradualmente entre un dos y un cuatro por ciento por generaciön.

Interrelationship between the thyroid gland and sympathetic function

Resumen Se estudió en ratas Wistar macho, el efecto de la triiodotironina y el¹³¹I sobre el contenido y concentración noradrenalina y adrenalina, en glándula submaxilar y corazón. Se estudió también, el efecto del isoproterenol sobre el glucógeno de ambos órganos en animales controles e hipotiroideos experimentales. Se observó un comportamiento diferente en los depósitos de noradrenalina y adrenalina en los órganos estudiados. La triiodotironina produjo una disminución en la liberación o catabolismo de las catecolaminas y el¹³¹I parece causar el efecto opuesto y una disminución de la sensibilidad de los recptores adrenérgicos.

Effect of hypothalamic crude extract on the utilization of D-[14C]-glucose by the anterior pituitary,in vitro

Resumen Los efectos de extractos crudos de hipotalamo en la utilizacion deD-[¹⁴C]-glucosa por hipófisis anteriores fueram estudiados in vitro en condiciones identicas a aquelas en las cuales los extractos inducen la liberación de hormonas al medio de incubación. Los resultados indican que los extractos hipotalámicos aumentan la producción de¹⁴CO₂ por la hipófisis a partir de glucose y la incorporación de¹⁴C en proteinas del medio de incubación. Los extractos no modificaron la cantidad de¹⁴C glucose utilizada para sintesis de proteinas tissulares.     

Cortisol-induced migration of eosinophil leukocytes to lymphoid organs

Summary Cortisol induces a migration of eosinophil leukocytes from the blood to several lymphoid organs, such as the spleen, lymph nodes and thymus, but not to other tissues. This migration explains the cortisol-induced blood eosinopenia, which is much more pronounced in intact than in splenectomized animals.Acknowledgments.
