On the chemical nature of the heat-stable exotoxin ofBacillus thuringiensis

Zusammenfassung Das hitzestabile Exotoxin vonBacillusthuringiensis — auf Insekten spezifisch toxisch wirkend — wurde aus dem Kulturmedium angereichert und stark gereinigt. Sämtliche toxischen Fraktionen zeigen ein Absorptionsmaximum bei 258–260 nm, ein Absorptionsminimum bei 232–234 nm und eine positive Aldopentosereaktion. Bei der toxischen Substanz scheint es sich um ein Nucleosid oder Nucleotid des Adenins oder Uracils zu handeln.     

Effects of plant sterols on cholesterol concentration in the rat small intestine

Summary The effects of feeding single doses of -sitosterol, campesterol and stigmasterol on cholesterol concentration in the rat small intestine was studied to clarify their roles in cholesterol absorption. The different plant sterols affected free and ester cholesterol concentrations differently in the different intestinal segments suggesting that they have different effects on such intestinal processes as uptake, esterification and possibly synthesis of cholesterol and transport of cholesterol esters out of the mucosal cells into the lymphatics.Acknowledgments. On the chemical nature of acerin and the virucidal and antiviral effects of some vegetable tannins

Zusammenfassung Die viruzide Wirkung von Extrakten aus Ahornsamen auf Coli-Bakteriophagen ist durch Tannine bedingt. Verschiedene Gerbstoffe zeigen einen zum Teil sehr starken virushemmenden Effekt, wobei nur das extrazelluläre Virus angegriffen wird. Wahrscheinlich handelt es sich um eine Gerbwirkung auf das Protein des Virus.Die pflanzlichen Gerbstoffe tragen vermutlich dazu bei, die Pflanzensäfte virusfrei zu halten.

We were ignorant of this work and of the previous publication from 1948 byGreen, Proc. Soc. Exptl. Biol. Med.67, 483 (1948).     

Effect of tryptophan on hepatic nuclear free and engaged RNA-polymerases in young and adult rats

Summary Whereas in young rats (2 weeks old), administration of typtophan produced marked enhancement in the activity of both engaged and free polymerases of nuclei, in adult rats (10 weeks old) only the engaged polymerases showed higher activities following tryptophan force-feeding.

Chemical reductionism revisited: Lewis, Pauling and the physico-chemical nature of the chemical bond

The wave-mechanical treatment of the valence bond, by Walter Heitler and Fritz London, and its ensuing foundational importance in quantum chemistry has been traditionally regarded as the basis for the argument that chemistry may be theoretically reduced to physics. Modern analyses of the reductionist claim focuses on the limitations to achieving full reduction in practice because of the approximations used in modern quantum chemical methods, but neglect the historical importance of the chemical bond as a chemical entity. This paper re-examines these arguments with a study of the development of the valence bond by chemist Gilbert Lewis within a chemically autonomous framework, and its extension by Linus Pauling using Heitler and London’s methods. Here, we see that the chemical bond is best described as a theoretical synthesis or physico-chemical entity, to represent its full interdisciplinary importance from the philosophical and historical perspectives.

The chemical nature of the pig blood-group substances dissolved in the serum

Zusammenfassung In Schweineseren finden sich die Blutgruppenantigene A, Na and Nb in gelöster Form. Aus den entsprechenden Schweineseren wurden einerseits die Totallipide, andererseits die Mucoproteide extrahiert und in immunologischen Hemmungstests auf ihre Aktivität im A- und N-System untersucht. Es ergab sich, dass die determinanten Gruppen der Na- und Nb-Antigene an Mucoproteide gebunden sind, während die determinante Gruppe des A-Antigens sowohl an ein Mucoproteid als auch an ein Lipid gebunden ist.     

Effects of estrogen or progesterone on prepuberal ovaries implanted in castrated adult male rats

Résumé Des greffons d'ovaire de rat impubère placés dans la chambre antérieure de l'il du mâle castré, après traitement avec 0,5 mg de dipropionate d'stradiol ou avec deux doses de 1 mg de progestérone, ont montré une évidente ovulation. On interprète ce fait comme dû á l'action des hormones injectées dans le système nerveux central et qui favorisent le mécanisme de l'ovulation.
