Ketoconazole — a new broad spectrum orally active antimycotic

Summary Oral treatment with ketoconazole prevented and cured artificial crop candidosis of the turkey, vaginal candidosis of the rat and skin candidosis of the guinea-pig. It was also highly effective against artificial systemic candidosis of the guinea-pig and chicken as well as against dermatophytoses of the guinea-pig.This work was supported by the Instituut tot Aanmoediging van het Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek in Nijverheid en Landbouw.     

Distribution of contractile proteins and adrenergic nerves in the adrenal gland of guinea-pig, rat and ox as revealed by immunofluorescence and the glyoxylic acid technique.

Myosin and actin were localized in the adrenal gland, using antibodies against these proteins which were isolated from chicken gizzard. Myosin and actin were preferentially located in vascular walls including endothelial cells and in the capsule. In rat and guinea-pig adrenal cortex, the amount of contractile elements in vascular walls corresponded well to the density of adrenergic nerves as revealed with the glyoxylic acid method.

Evidence of urinary glomerular basement membrane (GBM) antigens excretion in 3 rodents (rat, mouse, and guinea-pig) (author's transl)]

Immunodiffusion technique, with rabbits antibodies against rat glomerular basement membrane (GBM), permits to evidence the presence of GBM antigens into normal urines of 3 rodents (rat, mouse, and guinea-pig). These results confirm the earlier works in human and rabbit urines and show the antigenic communauty existing between the 3 rodents GBM, since we can evidence antigens of 3 different mammals with the same antibody. The origin and the nature of this patterns and the signification of this presence into mammalian urines are discussed.     

Glycosaminoglycans in separated tubules of the guinea-pig and rat kidney medulla

Isolated tubules of the renal medulla of guinea-pig and rat contained glycosaminoglycans. 20--25% of the uronic acids corresponded to hyaluronic acid. In the guinea-pig, chondroitin and dermatan-sulfates accounted for at least 50% of the uronic acids, whereas, in the rat, heparan sulfates comprised 65--70% of them.

Summary This paper shows for the first time the presence of progesterone receptors in the foetal guinea-pig uterus, as well as the stimulation of progesterone receptors in foetal uterus in animals treated with oestradiol.

A histochemical study of leucine amino peptidase activity in the testes of immature and mature guinea-pigs

Summary The distribution of the enzyme leucine amino peptidase (LAP) has been studied histochemically in immature and mature guinea-pig testes. Immature guinea-pig testis showed a very feeble LAP activity, while in mature ones strong LAP activity was noted. The present communication indicates a direct relationship between the activity of the enzyme LAP and sexual maturation.

Summary In contrast to the urinary fibrinolysokinase (=urokinase) of other species, the urokinase in guineapigs reveals a most peculiar behaviour. A significant and well reproducible activation of fibrinolysin is obtainable only when guinea-pig fibrinolysin is used. Fibrinolysin of other species is only slightly activated. This fact is most important in investigations on the increased fibrinolytic activity of guinea-pig urine.     

Extracellular calcium ions modify the effects of Anemonia sulcata toxin (ATX II) in guinea-pig papillary muscles

In isolated guinea-pig papillary muscle ATX II prolonged the action potential duration to a lesser extent at high extracellular Ca++-concentrations. This is interpreted as an interference of Ca++ with ATX II-binding sites.     

Effect of different bathing media on the short-circuit current across the intestine of the rat and guinea-pig.

The changes in short-circuit current occurring when one or both solutions bathing the intestine of rat or guinea-pig mounted in flux chambers were recorded. The results with the guinea-pig can be explained in terms of diffusion potentials arising from the ionic replacements, and an electrogenic sodium pump, sensitive to ouabain, in the contraluminal membrane of the cell. In the rat, the situation is more complicated, and the enterocyte probably possesses an electrogenic sodium pump in the brush-border membrane.

The localization of kallikrein in the dog and guinea-pig submandibular glands

Summary In the dog and guinea-pig submandibular glands kallikrein seems to be present in the striated duct cells. Following sympathetic nerve and in vivo isoproterenol stimulation of the dog and guinea-pig submandibular gland respectively, there is a reduction of kallikrein concentration. Ultrastructurally this reduction corresponds to the decrease of straited duct secretory granules in both species. Parasympathetic stimulation also causes some release of kallikrein from both species.Supported by Dean's M.R.C. grant to the College of Dentistry.

On the distribution of plasma L-asparaginase

The guinea-pig, Cavia porcellus, is unusual in possessing plasma L-asparaginase, an enzyme with anti-tumor activity, 21 additional species have been examined as to the presence of this enzyme: the results confirm and extend its remarkably limited species distribution.     

Effects of [N-(2-oxo-3,5,7-cycloheptatrien-1-yl)] aminooxoacetic acid ethyl ester (AY-25,674) on cyclic 3',5'-nucleotide formation and phosphodiesterase activity.

The orally-effective antiallergic compound [N-(2-oxo-3,5,7-cycloheptatrien-1-yl)] aminooxoacetic acid ethyl ester (AY-25,674) exhibited a potency equivalent to or 3 times less than theophylline in inhibiting guinea-pig lung and beef heart PDE, respectively, AY-25,674 did not affect the basal activity of guinea-pig lung adenyl cyclase. Although part of the antiallergic activity of AY-25,674 may be due to the ability to elevate cyclic AMP levels by PDE inhibition, other modes of action appear to be of greater relevance.     

An alkaline protease in the delayed hypersensitivity skin lesions in the guinea-pigs.

An alkaline hemoglobinolytic protease was extracted from the delayed hypersensitivity skin lesions induced by bovine gamma-globulin as an antigen in the guinea-pig. The enzyme was heat-labile and inhibited by thiol-blocking reagents. The mol.wt. was more than 100,000 and optimal pH around 9.

Electrical slow waves in oviductal smooth muscle of the guinea-pig,mouse and the immature baboon

Summary Oviducts of the guinea-pig, mouse and immature baboon show prominent electrical slow waves. In the guinea-pig oviduct they are 40–50 mV in amplitude and have a duration of 1.5 sec in the isthmus.
