Zusammenfassung Die Struktur desp-Bromphenylhydrazids der Byssochlamsäure, des charakteristischen Stoffwechselproduktes vonByssochlamys fulva, wurde durch dreidimensionale Röntgenanalyse bestimmt. Die Resultate stellen eine Bestimmung der Konstitution und Stereochemie (abgesehen von der absoluten Konfiguration) desp-Bromphenylhydrazids als (I) und demnach der Byssochlamsäure als (II) dar.

Résumé On a trouvé queClavariopsis aquatica tolère une grande acidité. Le pourcentage des amino-acides qui composent la protéine fongique a été très peu affecté par la source d'azote et n'a aucun rapport avec la composition de la masse commune des amino-acides libres. La pourcentage des amino-acides qui composent la protéine correspond à un pourcentage de guanine/cytosine de 25.     

The effect of glutamate,cysteate and related amino acids on insect muscle

Summary Application of Glu, CySO₂ or CySO₃ to blowfly larvae caused paralysis and increased the membrane potential of larval muscle. The contents of Glu and CySO₃ in larval muscle containing motor nerve terminals were markedly decreased after the perfusion of high K⁺ saline solution.

Les méthodes physiques couramment appliquées à une macro- ou micro-échelle sont discutées et l'on donne des exemples tirés de la littérature ou de méthodes récemment utilisées dans les recherches. Celles-ci comprennent la cristallisation, la distillation fractionnée, la distribution par contre-courant, la chromatographie en phase gazeuse et la spectrographie de masse.

Structure, function and metabolism of sialic acids

Sialic acids represent a family of sugar molecules with an unusual and highly variable chemical structure that are found mostly in the terminal position of oligosaccharide chains on the surface of cells and molecules. These special features enable them to fulfil several important and even diametrical biological functions. Because of the great importance of sialic acids, it is also worth having a look at their metabolism in order to get an idea of the intimate connection between structure and function of these fascinating molecules and the often serious consequences that result from disturbances in the balance of metabolic reactions. The latter can be due to genetic disorders that result in the absence of certain enzyme activity, leading to severe illness or even to death. The taste ofl- andd-amino acids

Zusammenfassung Der Geschmack derl- undd-enantiomorphen Formen verschiedener Aminosäuren wurde in vergleichenden statistischen Degustationsversuchen ermittelt. Dabei dienten Caffein und Zucker als Standardsubstanzen für den bitteren, bzw. süssen Geschmack. Arginin, Asparaginsäure, Isoleucin, Lysin, Prolin, Serin, Threonin und Valin sind weitgehend geschmacklos, während Cystein, Glutaminsäure und Methionin komplexe Geschmacksnoten besitzen. Alanin, Histidin, Leucin, Phenylalanin, Tryptophan, Tyrosin und Glycin besitzen einen ausgeprägten Eigengeschmack, wobei vor allem diel-Isomeren schwach bis stark bitter und died-Isomeren schwach bis stark süss sind.     

The occurrence of arachidonic and related acids in plants

Zusammenfassung Im Gegensatz zu der allgemeinen Auffassung, dass Arachidonsäure nur in Tieren und den niedrigsten Formen des Pflanzenreiches vorkomme, konnte diese Säure in mehreren Arten Farn und Moos nachgewiesen und identifiziert werden. Die relative Menge der Arachidonsäure beträgt in den bisherigen Beispielen zwischen 10 und 35% der Fettsäurekomponenten.

The asymmetry of the nucleotide bases and amino acids

Summary Due to the electric polarisation induced by the carbon and nitrogen atoms, the molecules of the nucleotide bases present a stereo-asymmetry. The DNA right-handed double helix is determined by the asymmetry of the nucleotide bases and it is concordant with the right-handed -helix of the polypeptide molecules formed by L-amino acids.     

Stimulation of RNA polymerase activity by histones,polyamino acids,and polypeptide hormones

Zusammenfassung Decalysin, Polyarginin, Polylysin, Polyornithin, Kalbsthymushistone und Polypeptidhormone stimulieren in niedriger Konzentration die DNA-abhängige RNS-Polymerase-Aktivität vonEscherichia coli, während sie in hoher Konzentration die Enzymaktivität hemmen.
