Exploring biology with small organic molecules

Small organic molecules have proven to be invaluable tools for investigating biological systems, but there is still much to learn from their use. To discover and to use more effectively new chemical tools to understand biology, strategies are needed that allow us to systematically explore 'biological-activity space'. Such strategies involve analysing both protein binding of, and phenotypic responses to, small organic molecules. The mapping of biological-activity space using small molecules is akin to mapping the stars--uncharted territory is explored using a system of coordinates that describes where each new feature lies.

Making light work with optical tweezers.

Microscopic objects, including biological material, can be remotely manipulated with tightly focused beams of infrared laser light. The use of optical traps, or 'optical tweezers', holds great promise for noninvasive micromanipulation and mechanical measurement in cell biology. Optical tweezers are the 'tractor beams' of today's technology.     

Decision Making Approach with Focus Point and Regret

In this paper, decision making under uncertainty with regret is studied. The alternative is evaluated by focus point to fit the feature that the decision process cannot be repeated many times. If the objective captured by focus point is not achieved, there is a regret. The regret of an action is determined by the focus point of the other actions. The set of the alternatives available is updated by the regret threshold, and the optimal action can be obtained by the selected focus point of each alternative. The proposed method is a new fundamental alternative for decision making under uncertainty. Using focus point as reference gives the regret a clear meaning. The decision making procedure matches the intuitive expectations of human being. It explains the phenomena that does not conform to classical decision making theory.
