Summary The quantitative acidimetric investigation (Bjerrum's method) of Cu^I coordination reactions in homogeneous aqueous medium is feasible by application of the easily accessible, well crystallized stable complex Cu(CH₃CN)₄ClO₄ in 0.1 to 1 molar CH₃CN aq., the stability of particles present in the system Cu^I, CH₃CN, H₂O being previously established polarographically. The advantage of the new acidimetric method lies in the possibility of investigating Cu^I in absence of Cu^II.

Summary Some arguments put forward byG. Bier in a recent article in order to supportH. Staudinger's assumption that chain molecules in solution should behave like straight rigid rods are examined. It is shown that the assumptions made byG. Bier are largely arbitrary. The main argument is the assumption that the C-C-bond in long chain molecules should not show any rotation. As far as this point is concerned, attention is drawn to some recent publications showing that the viscosity of shape of chain molecules can be determined by experiment (specific viscosity and double refraction of flow at high velocity gradients). According to these determinations the time necessary for a complete change of shape, using partially free rotation, is of the order of 10^–5–10^–3 seconds for molecules like nitrocellulose or polystyrene up to degrees of polymerization of several thousands and for viscosities of the solvent of the order of 10^–2 poises.

Summary Following intravenous injection of pyruvic acid (PA) in the form of the sodium salt in the normal rabbit the level of PA in the blood rises, falling again to the initial level after 60 minutes. In the case of the alloxandiabetic animal the elimination of PA administered in equal doses is markedly retarded. If animals are used that suffer from a progredient alloxan diabetes leading to death in coma, an increased endogenous hyperpyruviæmia can be demonstrated. Insulin plays no part in the regulation of PA metabolism; through the application of aneurin, however, one succeeds in enabling the organism to make use of PA. A separate report will deal with the complex relations holding in endogenous hyperpyruviæmia in coma.

Summary In the end-stage of progressive alloxan diabetes of the rabbit we have been able to overcome the acute pyruvic acidosis by the use of phosphorylated vitamin B₁ (cocarboxylase) together with vitamin B₂, while it is impossible to cure the endogen hyperpyruviæmia with simple vitamin B₁. The superiority of the coferment over the vitamin, which is only effective at the beginning of the decompensation, implies the existence of a disturbance in the phosphorylation during the crisis of diabetic metabolism. We have been successful in preventing the inevitable death in coma of diabetic rabbits by doses of cocarboxylase + riboflavin, and we were able to keep them alive by continuous doses of insulin together with vitamin B₁ and B₂.
