Summary The administration of cyproterone acetate (CPA) to adult male frogs of the speciesR. cyanophlyctis caused a significant reduction in the number of cell nests with primary spermatogonia (stage 0) per seminiferous tubule cross section, and a marked reduction in the height of the thumb pad epidermis and mucous glands. It is concluded that the development and/or proliferation of primary spermatogonia inR. cyanophlyctis are androgen dependent.The gift of cyproterone acetate from Schering AG is gratefully acknowledged. Summary The pretreatment of irradiated mice by cyproterone acetate had a better radioprotective effect in comparison with orchidectomy, although the weight of the thymus was lower in the cyproterone acetate group. The radioprotective mechanisms involved in both cases were discussed.Acknowledgment. Summary Bordetella pertussis has been shown to remain viable for a period of 13 years on freeze-drying. Summary The toxicity of different concentrations of Dithane M-45 onDrosophila melanogaster was determined. The chemical was administered by larval feeding. It has been estimated that the LC50 is 17.5 mg/100 ml food medium. The studies have suggested that Dithane M-45 has a pronounced effect on the rate of development and viability.Acknowledgments. Summary Scarites occidentalis has 2n=41 (females 2n=42), n=19+X1X2Y. This multiple sex-chromosome system and other karyotypic characteristics suggest that this species andS. buparius share a recent common ancestor in which the sex trivalent was probably originated.Thanks are due to Dr N. Summary Sonographic analyses of songs and calls of Bonelli's Warbler (Phylloscopus bonelli) show important structural differences between the geographically isolated western (P.b. bonelli) and eastern (P.b. orientalis) populations. Playback experiments in the field and some morphological differences suggest that these populations may be separating into 2 species.Supported by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (H.-H.B. and J.M.).The authors wish to thank Dr D. Summary The C-band on the chromosomes of the Japanese house shrew,Suncus murinus riukiuanus (Insectivora), was studied. Various types of C-banding pattern were found in the genome of this subspecies. Such banding patterns could be useful for an understanding of autosome and sex-chromosome polymorphisms withinS. murinus.Acknowledgment. The authors are very grateful to Prof. T. Zusammenfassung Von den Blutzellen derPhallusia mamillata Cuvier zeigen nur die stark vakuolisierten (compartment cells) im UV-Licht eine stabile blaue Fluoreszenz ( max =5200 und 4600 Å). Sie ist in den Zellgranula lokalisiert. Bei den Blutzellen vonCiona intestinalis L. tritt dagegen eine gelbe Fluoreszenz ( max = 5900, 5200 und 4600 Å) auf, die nur von den Vanadocyten ausgeht. Diese Fluoreszenz, welche auch von den Testazellen der Oocyten gegeben wird, geht innerhalb einiger Minuten in die blaue Fluoreszenz über.

Summary Antibodies against hyperglycemic hormone (CHH) ofCarcinus were raised in rabbits by injection of extract from sinus glands which contain high concentrations of CHH. The antiserum neutralizes the biological activity of CHH and binds125J-CHH. A RIA for CHH was established and was used to measure the hormone content of sinus glands.Dedicated to Prof. M. Summary When the shoot-tips ofViscum fischeri Engl. were treated with various concentrations of colchicine for different lengths of time, it was found that in this plant chromosome breakage was not localized to centromeric region as reported in other plants. InV. fischeri chromosome breakage occurred at random (simulating X-ray-induced fragmentation). The percentage of breakage increased linearly with respect to time at concentrations 0.1, 0.2, 0.3% but parabolically at 0.5%.Acknowledgment. The authors are grateful to Dr M. A. Summary Reversible effects of palytoxin, extracted from colonies of the soft coralPalythoa caribaeorum, are described. There is a decrease of both membrane resting potential and overshoot during activity. Rise time of the action potential is prolonged, while repolarization is shortened. Zusammenfassung Mit doppelt markiertem Glycin konnte gezeigt werden, dass das Kohlenstoffatom der Methylgruppe viel besser als das Kohlenstoffatom der Karboxylgruppe in die Isoprengruppe des Ophiobolins B ausCochiobolus miyabeanus eingebaut wird. Die Radioaktivität wird in Ophiobolin B eingebaut, wenn die folgenden Verbindungen verwendet werden: [3-14C]-Serin, [14C-Methyl]-Sarcosin, [14C-Methyl]-Methionin, und [14C] Formate.

Summary It is shown that the Australian lungfish (Neoceratodus forsteri) synthesizes ascorbic acid in its kidney, suggesting that ascorbic acid synthesis started before the origin of the tetrapods.Acknowledgments.
