Successive clutches induced by surgical excision of post-ovulatory oocytes in the lizard Cnemidophorus uniparens.

19 animals had eggs excised from the oviducts soon after ovulation. Number of clutches was nearly tripled in excised animals as compared to controls. An influence of eggs in the oviduct on number of clutches is suggested and may indicate a neuronal link between oviduct and hypothalamus.     

Studies on the histopathological changes induced by DDT in the liver,kidney, and intestine of certain fishes

Zusammenfassung Es wurde der Einfluss von DDT auf verschiedene Organe von Fischen untersucht. Bei niederen Dosen (3 p.p.m.) wurden zelluläre Läsionen und Leberhypertrophie beobachtet und bei einer Dosis von 50 p.p.m. trat Nekrose ein. Symptome von Atrophic in der Niere wurden beobachtet, ebenso wurde die Darmschleimhaut beeinflusst.     

Long-term changes in retinal function induced by short,high intensity flashes

Zusammenfassung Die Versuchstechnik wurde so gewählt, dass die Retinafunktion über längere Zeit registriert werden konnte. Ein Elektronenblitz mit einer Intensität von ca. 7 Logarithmeneinheiten über dem Schwellenwert derb-Welle erzielte eine signifikante, oft eine Woche dauernde Verminderung derb-Wellenamplitude des dunkeladaptierten Auges. Dies war auch der Fall mit Elektronenblitzen von grösserer Intensität. Der oft viele Wochen dauernden Verminderung ging aber dann eine initiale Erhöhung derb-Wellenamplitude voraus. Entsprechende Veränderungen des Schwellenwerts derb-Welle wurden auch beobachtet.     

tRNA structural and functional changes induced by oxidative stress

Oxidatively damaged biomolecules impair cellular functions and contribute to the pathology of a variety of diseases. RNA is also attacked by reactive oxygen species, and oxidized RNA is increasingly recognized as an important contributor to neurodegenerative complications in humans. Recently, evidence has accumulated supporting the notion that tRNA is involved in cellular responses to various stress conditions. This review focuses on the intriguing consequences of oxidative modification of tRNA at the structural and functional level.     

Myopathic changes at the end-plate region induced by neostigmine methylsulfate

Summary Administration of large dose of neostigmine caused very quickly marked myopathic changes at the motor end-plate region. With continued injections, however some recovery of the structural features did occur suggesting the reconstructive changes in the affected regions.Acknowledgment. Metaplasia in male rat reproductive accessory glands induced by neonatal estrogen treatment

Enzymic and behavioural changes induced in mice fed polychlorinated biocides followed by starvation

Zusammenfassung Gewicht, Gesamtprotein der Cytoplasmafraktion sowie die Aktivität des P-450-Komplexes der Leber wurden bei Mäusen nach Intoxikation mit DDT bzw. mit Lindan vor und während einer totalen Hungerperiode untersucht. Bei den hungernden Kontrolltieren war der Gesamtproteingehalt in der Cytoplasmafraktion der Leber niedrig. DDT und Lindan bewirkten eine Zunahme der Aktivität des P-450-Komplexes um 50% und 140%. Die Lindanintoxikation war stark ausgeprägt, so dass die betreffenden Tiere das Hungern nicht aushielten. Die hungernden, mit DDT vergifteten Mäuse wiesen eine weitere Steigerung der Aktivität des P-450-Komplexes auf; ihre Sterblichkeit betrug ca. 45%. Diese Tiere zeigten am Ende der Hungerperiode auch neurologische Störungen mit Einschränkungen der Bewegung.     

Optic microscope observations on changes in enamel and dentin induced by laser beams

By a laser beam, enamel and dentin are changed into an identical crystalline structure observed in reflected light and described as recrystallisation after fusion. The Vickers pyramidal numbers of these areas are the same as the mature enamel surface (590 VPN). The theoretical calculation proved that after irradiation in enamel there is an elevation of temperature about 2,5 degrees C through 3 mm. These observations suggest that new operative techniques might be possible.     

Ultrastructural changes in the neural lobe of the rat pituitary induced by reserpine treatment.

The doses of reserpine, which are generally used to deplete amines from the nervous tissue caused marked ultrastructural changes in the neural lobes of reserpine treated rats. The findings suggested depletion of neurosecretory granules, increased lysosomal activity and changes in the pituicytes.     

Phosphoglucomutase polymorphism in the rainbow trout,Salmo gairdneri

Zusammenfassung Es wird aufgrund von Stärke-Gel-Zymogrammanalysen der Phosphoglukomutase in 72 Forellen (Salmo gairdneri) die Existenz eines polymorphen und zweier nicht variierender Gene ermittelt. Der Polymorphismus beruht auf 2 Allelen mit übereinstimmenden Frequenzen im Hardy-Weinberg-Gleichgewicht.

Mitochondrial changes induced by diphtheria toxin in chicken embryo heart cell cultures

Riassunto L'autore ha preso in considerazione l'effetto della tossina difterica in varie concentrazioni sulle cellule di cuore di embrione di polio coltivate in vitro. L'effetto saliente consiste in un effetto rigonfiante, assai precoce, sui mitocondri. Ogni altro effetto citopatico è più tardivo. L'autore prospetta l'ipotesi che il rigonfiamento mitocondriale sia correlato a lesione biochimica del metabolismo energetico.
