Radioimmunoassay of progesterone in uterine flushings of buffalo (Bubalus bubalis)

Radioimmunoassay of cortisol in blood of buffaloes (Bubalus bubalis) during the oestrous cycle

Summary Changes in the concentration of cortisol were measured by radioimmunoassay in the blood plasma of buffaloes (Bubalus bubalis). There were minor fluctuations in the level during the oestrous cycle, but the differences between the days were not significant. The study revealed that cortisol under normal conditions does not appear to be involved in the regulation of the cycle.The authors are indebted to Dr D. Bombesin,calcitonin and leu-enkephalin immunoreactivity in endocrine cells of human lung

Summary By immunohistochemistry, bombesin, calcitonin and leu-enkephalin was localized in endocrine cells of human lungs from various age groups. It is suggested that at least 3 different peptide containing endocrine cells may be present in human lung.Acknowledgments. Distribution of free and conjugated ecdysteroids between follicle cell sheath and ooplasm in oocytes of the cockroachNauphoeta cinerea

Summary It is shown that both follicle cell sheath and ooplasm contain only small quantities ofHelix-hydrolyzable ecdysteroid conjugates and that 20-hydroxy-ecdysone is the predominant free ecdysteroid. Its concentration is very high in the follicle cell sheath immediately before chorion formation (6825 ng/g) and much lower after chorion formation (150 ng/g), while it is 234 ng/g and 95 ng/g in the ooplasm at the same stages respectively.Thanks are due to Dr J.D. Prolactin and growth hormone do not interfere with the response of mouse testes to hCG in vitro

Summary In incubations of decapsulated mouse testes with a maximally stimulating dose of hCG, the accumulation of testosterone was not affected by the addition of PRL at concentrations from 0.1 to 50 μg/ml or GH at concentrations from 0.5 to 25 μg/ml. Plasma thyrotrophin concentration in the foetal calf

Characterization of a thermosensitive protein from human milk whey

Summary A human milk whey protein, which aggregates at room temperature and resolubilizes when cooled, was purified by chromatography on hydroxyapatite. The present study demonstrated that the thermosensitive protein is a nonphosphorylated form of -casein.We thank Dr J.J. Pahud for preparation of anti Na-caseinate antiserum and Miss D. Ecdysteroid titers during larval reproduction of the dipteran insectHeteropeza pygmae

Summary Ecdysteroid titers were measured in whole-body extracts of pedogenetically reproducing larvae of the dipteran insectHeteropeza pygmaea and in the dietary fungus. The titers are very low in the first 3 days of larval growth, but increase during the last 2 days. The level of 20-hydroxyecdysone is then significantly higher than that of ecdysone. Exogenous makisterone A accelerates early embryonic development in the milkweed bugOncopeltus fasciatus

Summary Reproducing females ofOncopeltus fasciatus which were treated with exogenous makisterone A and 20-hydroxyecdysone laid eggs with considerably elevated ecdysteroid contents. The early embryonic development was markedly accelerated when the mother was treated with makisterone A, whereas 20-hydroxyecdysone had no influence.Supported by grants of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (Do 163/7) to A. Preparation of specific antiserum againstRana esculenta pre-α lens crystallin

Summary Specific antiserum againstRana esculenta lens pre- crystallin was prepared in a rabbit by injecting antigen-antibody precipitate of this crystallin obtained from immunoelectrophoresis ofesculenta total soluble lens proteins against homologous antiserum.Acknowledgments. Radioimmunoassay of an invertebrate peptide hormone — the crustacean neurosecretory hyperglycemic hormone

Summary Antibodies against hyperglycemic hormone (CHH) ofCarcinus were raised in rabbits by injection of extract from sinus glands which contain high concentrations of CHH. The antiserum neutralizes the biological activity of CHH and binds¹²⁵J-CHH. A RIA for CHH was established and was used to measure the hormone content of sinus glands.Dedicated to Prof. M. Androgen levels in the rete testis fluid during sexual development

Summary The concentrations of testosterone (T) and 5-dihydrotestosterone were measured in fluid collected from the rete testis of immature and adult rats. The results indicate that adult levels of T are attained in the seminiferous tubules much earlier than in the peripheral circulation.This work was performed at the Worcester Foundation for Experimental Biology, Shrewsbury, Massachusetts, USA and supported by the National Institutes of Health through grants HD12641 and HD12642. The attenuation of prostaglandin-induced luteolysis in decidual tissue-bearing pseudopregnant rats

Summary Decidual tissue (DT)-bearing pseudopregnant (PSP) rats, in contrast to hysterectomized PSP rats, were resistant to a luteolytic regimen of either PGF₂ or PGE₂ when examined for the duration of PSP diestrus. The PG treatments, however, caused a marked fall in the serum progesterone levels on days 10 and 12, although the levels in DT-bearing rats on day 10 were significantly higher than in the hysterectomized rats.Acknowledgment. Involvement of a surface concanavalin A-binding glycoprotein in the adhesion ofTrichomonas vaginalis to substrates

Summary Treatment ofTrichomonas vaginalis with EDTA removes their ability to adhere to glass surfaces and changes their affinity to Concanavalin A (ConA) by a different distribution of their surface structures. Filtrates of the EDTA-treatedTrichomonas passed through affinity chromatography columns (ConA bound to Sepharose 4B0 separate into 2 fractions, one fraction was bound to the ConA-Sepharose beads, the other was not. The Con A-bound fraction appears to be a glycoprotein which restores in a specific way the ability of the EDTA-treated protozoa to adhere to glass. We want to thank Dr.P. M. A simple method for the preparation of antibodies to the mitochondrial biotin-dependent carboxylases

Summary Heterologous antiserum to the 3 biotin-dependent carboxylases was prepared by selective removal of these enzymes from human liver on an avidin-sepharose column. A carboxylase-avidin-sepharose matrix was used as an antigen to produce anti-carboxylase antibodies. The resultant antisera can be used to purifiy the specific carboxylases, to prepare monoclonal antibodies to these enzymes or to study inherited carboxylase deficiencies and biotin-dependent intermediary metabolism.The authors thank Dr Emmanuel Shapira for his helpful suggestions and Patricia Tuck for her technical assistance. Selective and reversible modification of essential thiol groups of D-glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase by isothiocyanates

Summary Aralkyl and alkyl isothiocyanates, like aryl isothiocyanates, undergo a selective and reversible reaction with essential thiol groups of D-glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase; the former 2 substances require for a reversible reaction course a more alkaline medium and presence of a thiol.The authors are indebted to Dr J. The effects of nerve growth factor antiserum on ambystoma

Résumé Des injections d'un sérum spécifique contre le facteur de croissance nerveuse (anti-NGF) provoquent une réduction de la taille des ganglions rachidiens de la salamandreAmbystoma par suite de la réduction de la masse cellulaire du ganglion. Il y a aussi un plus grand nombre de «petites» cellules (d'un diamètre nucléaire de moins de 6,25 ) dans les ganglions des animaux utilisés.

Mutagenicity and toxicity of chloroethylene oxide and chloroacetaldehyde

Summary Exposure of severaltrp-auxotrophicEscherichia coli strains, carrying base0pair substitutions, to chloroethylene oxide or chloroacetaldehyde (two metabolites of vinyl chloride) increased the mutation frequency to tryptophan prototrophy. Strong cytotoxic and mutagenic effects were observed with 2.5 mM chloroethylene oxide, while a higher concentration of chloroacetaldehyde (100 mM) exhibited a mutagenic effect which was 400 times lower.I am grateful to Prof. G.
