Selective blockade of components of potassium activation inMyxicola axons

Summary The K⁺ conductance inMyxicola giant axons activates in two phases which are pharmacologically separable. The fast phase of K⁺ activation is specifically inhibited by 4-aminopyridine and by the substitution of D₂O for H₂O. We suggestMyxicola giant axons, like the amphibian node of Ranvier, may possess more than one variety of K⁺ channel.     

Selective blockade by mephentermine of reserpine-induced serotonin depletion

Zusammenfassung Die kombinierte i.v. Verabreichung von Reserpin (1 mg/kg) und Mephentermin (1 mg/kg) bewirkte Erregung in Kaninchen. Diese Erregung ist verbunden mit einem Verlust an Noradrenalin (NE) im Gehirn, nicht jedoch mit einem Verlust an Serotonin (5-HT). Aus den Ergebnissen lässt sich schliessen, dass die beobachtete Erregung von einem momentanen Ungleichgewicht zwischen NE und 5-HT im Gehirn herrührt.

Selective activation of noradrenergic neurons in the brainstem and spinal cord of young spontaneously hypertensive rats

Summary In young spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR), dopamine -hydroxylase (DBH) and phenylethanolamine N-methyltransferase (PNMT) activities were examined in the brainstem nuclei. Activation of noradrenergic neurons in the locus coeruleus, A2 and spinal intermediolateral cell areas, resulting in enhanced sympathetic nervous activity in the periphery, initiates hypertension. Adrenergic neurons, unchanged in these and A1 cell areas of young SHR, are not involved in the development of hypertension in SHR.

Silver staining of axons in subcellular fractions of nervous tissue

Résumé L'argyrophilie est la propriété d'une partie constituante protéique de l'axoplasme qui peut être dissoute et reprécipitée. Il est donc probable que c'est une substance, ou un groupe de substances, plutôt qu'une organelle formée, qui est responsable de la coloration de l'axone au contact de l'argent. Les qualités de cette protéine diffèrent d'une façon marquée de celles déjà connues des protéines intracellulaires membraneuses et fibreuses.     

The activation of membrane ATPase by ouabain in several tissues of the golden hamster (Mesocricetus auratus) in the absence of potassium

Summary The activity of the membrane ATPase of 5 organs of the golden hamster was increased by 10^–7–10^–3 moles/l ouabain in K⁺-free medium. In similar experiments on rats no increase was observed.     

Radioprotective effect of reticuloendothelial system blockade in mice

Zusammenfassung Die i.v. Injektion von Kohlepartikeln an Mäusen, 24 h vor einer Bestrahlung mit 600 R, bietet einen bemerkenswerten Strahlenschutz. Die Problematik der biologischen Schutzfunktion durch die Reticulo-histiocytäre Systemblockade wird diskutiert.     

Anatomical evidence for cross regeneration of motor axons in a cockroach

Summary The technique of electrophoretic application of intracellular markers is used to demonstrate that motor axons can regenerate into the contralateral limb of a cockroach after the nerve has been crossed to the contralateral side.Supported by NIH grants IRO1NS1420401 and 5KO4NS0014102.     

Identification of actin microfilaments in the neurosecretory axons of rat neural lobe]

Incubation of rat neural lobes with heavy meromyosin (HMM) after prolonged glycerination, induced characteristic arrowhead decoration of a number of microfilaments at different levels of the neurosecretory axons. In non terminal sections of axons the labelled microfilaments showed preferential relationships with microtubules in addition to occasional contacts with the axolemma and various axonal organelles. In axonal endings, they were mainly associated to microvesicles and appeared to be anchored on the axolemma facing the perivascular space at the level of membranous densifications.     

Degeneration of unmyelinated axons in the dental root canal induced by 6-OH-dopamine

Summary The pulpal nerve fibres of feline incisors were examined ultrastructurally after i.v. administration of 6-OH-dopamine. The presence of degenerating unmyelinated fibres at this site provides conclusive morphological evidence that sympathetic fibres enter the dental pulp.     

Reversal of net secretion to net absorption of potassium in rat large intestine by dietary potassium depletion

Summary Feeding rats a diet low in potassium and high in sodium for 2 weeks led to a reversal of net potassium secretion to net potassium absorption in ligated segments of distal large intestine (colon descendens and rectum) under in-vivo conditions. This change in the direction of net potassium transport is probably important for the maintenance of potassium homeostasis.The technical assistance of Mrs U.
