Summary Taking the effect of NaCl as a basis, isomolar NaJ leads either to swelling or shrinking of elastic tissue dependent on salt concentration and pH of the aqueous medium. Close to the isoelectric point, the effect turns in the opposite direction. Corresponding to Hofmeister's lyotropic series, the same inversion also applies to the other monovalent anions measured at pH 7 and 2.

The structure of amoorastatone and the cytotoxic limonoid 12-hydroxyamoorastatin.

2 new limonoid-type terpenes have been isolated from an aqueous extract of seeds produced by the Eastern Himalayan (India) plant Aphanamixis grandifolia B1. By interpreting principally mass spectral and nuclear magnetic resonance data, the structures of 12-hydroxyamoorastatin (2b) and amoorastatone (3) were elucidated. Unequivocal evidence for the 12-hydroxyamoorastatin structural assignment was obtained by chemical conversion to sendanin (4). Amoorastatin derivative 2b was found to significantly inhibit growth of the murine P388 lymphocytic leukemia cell lines but amoorastatone in the same system was inactive. In a comparative biological study, sendanin (4) and anthothecol (7) were also found significantly to inhibit growth of the P388 cell line, while rohitukin (8) and limonin (9) were found to be inactive.     

Adenovirus type 12 infection of defined mouse-human hybrid cell clones.

Human adenovirus type 12 does not multiply in mouse cells; only viral T-antigen is detected. Mouse-human cell hybrid clones containing human chromosomes A3, B5, C7, C11, C12, D14, E17, F19 and F20, support synthesis of adenovirus DNA and capsid antigens.

Summary A method is described to get the secrete of the hatching glands together with the perivitelline fluid by stimulating the eggs ofSalmo gairdneri with dissolved gaseous nitrogen in various buffers. Characterizing this fluid by various methods there could be shown some enzymes of those a proteinase alone seems to be the really hatching enzyme.Der Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft sei für finanzielle Unterstützung gedankt.     

Zum Nachweis von Aminen im 10−10-Mol-Maßstab. Trennung von 1-Dimethylamino-naphthalin-5-sulfonsäure-amiden auf Dünnschichtchromatogrammen

Summary For the sensitive determination of amines their 1-dimethyl-amino-naphthalene-5-sulphonyl derivatives were separated in two-dimensional thin-layer chromatograms. 10^–10–10^–11 mole per amine can be detected, when the fluorescence of the DANSyl-compounds is excited by the 365 mµ Hg line.     

Zum Nachweis von Aminosäuren im 10−10-Mol-Maßstab. Trennung von 1-Dimethylamino-naphthalin-5-sulfonyl-aminosäuren auf Dünnschichtchromatogrammen

Summary Some solvent systems are described for the separation of 1-dimethyl-amino-naphthalene-5-sulphonylamino acids on thin layer chromatograms. 10^–10 mole per amino acid can be detected on a two-dimensional chromatogram, when the yellow fluorescence of these compounds is excited by a UV-lamp.     

Selective inhibition of the multiplication of phage T1 inE. coli K12

Riassunto Un nuovo antibiotico, la Distamicina, inibisce selettivamente lo sviluppo del batteriofago T1 inE. coli K12 pur non esercitando alcuna azione sullo sviluppo del microorganismo ospite. L'antibiotico può inibire sia la penetrazione del batteriofago nelle cellule batteriche sia la sua liberazione.     

Bacteriophage T4 mutants which propagate on E. coli K12 but not on E. coli B

Summary We have isolated and characterized 2 mutants of coliphage T4 which are able to propagate on E. coli K12 but not on E. coli B. We have assigned the mutations to genes 8 and 53, both structural genes. The products of genes 8 and 53 are found in the baseplate.Supported by grant No 3.519.75 from the Fonds national Suisse de la Recherche Scientifique.
