Summary The influence on the development of the outer segments of the rat retina of far red and red light in different sequences was investigated. The far red treatment appeared to be dominating, and for animals treated with far red light first, further treatment of red light could not bring the outer segment growth back to normal. The treatments also initiated different dopamine uptakes in the retinas.  相似文献

Summary Daily leaf movements were compared with the intensities and proportions of red and far red light during sunrise and sunset. A linear relationship exists between the inverse of the 1/3 power of the minimum leaf movement against the elapsed time for its occurrence since either sunrise or sunset. A minimum of the ratio of the intensities of red to far red light at 6 min after sunrise and 16 min before sunset are suggested to be related to minimal levels of far red phytochrome and of ATP activity.  相似文献

Summary Night N-acetyltransferase activity is suppressed by red and white light; the red light intensity, however, must be 10 times higher. Summary Sham-pinealectomy, performed under different light conditions in newborn and adult rats, is followed by changes of pineal activity resulting in variations of melatonin content. The pineal glands of rats sham-operated under white light produce significantly less melatonin. In contrast, glands of rats operated on under red light show a melatonin content corresponding to that of intact rats. This result implies that normal white light causes a disturbance in melatonin production by a non-retinal pathway.  相似文献

The possibility that natural laws and constants may not be true constants, but vary over cosmic periods of time, has recently attracted much attention. In this paper, I provide some historical background to the issue and consider, in the form of a historical review, some of the more spectacular developments within recent years. The focus of the paper is on the hypothesis of a varying speed of light, which appeared shortly after the announcement of the expanding universe. After a brief account of the history of this hypothesis, I consider in more details the varying c theories that have appeared during the last decade and were originally introduced as an alternative to the inflationary model. These so-called varying speed of light (VSL) theories have been surprisingly popular and created a flood of physics and cosmology papers. However, they have also been severely criticized from conceptual points of view and their status is as yet uncertain. Although a research programme in development, a historical perspective on VSL cosmology may not be out of place.  相似文献

Summary Phycoerythrin was not present in Anabaena ambigua Rao, and in its strains, Lh- and Ha-forms under normal culture conditions, but it developed in parent and Lh-form when treated with green light and nitrate. Summary Unusual club-shaped processes have been seen in the lymphoblasts in the peripheral blood of case of untreated acute leukemia. These arose from a single area of the cell surface and appeared identical to the morphologic change seen in ropalocytosis in red cells. Red cells in the peripheral blood were also affected.  相似文献

Bright light (2000-3000 lux) of sufficient intensity to suppress human melatonin secretion, acts as a strong zeitgeber in the entrainment of circadian rhythms in man. In polar conditions, light of this intensity is not experienced for several weeks during the winter. The entrainment of human circadian rhythms, in particular that of melatonin, is clearly of interest in these circumstances. Urinary 6-hydroxy melatonin sulphate (aMT6s) is a good index of melatonin secretion in man. In a limited study of seven male volunteers living on an Antarctic base the overall 24-h rhythm of aMT6s excretion was maintained at four different times of year (spring, summer, autumn and winter) and no significant seasonal effects were noted. Cortisol excretion, appeared to be markedly affected by the season although other factors such as social and environmental stress cannot be discounted. These observations suggest that in the absence of a strong light-dark cycle melatonin production may be entrained by other factors.  相似文献

Calmodulin is a regulator of several calcium-dependent cellular processes. It has been suggested that it plays a role in the mechanism of secretion. Employing an indirect immunoperoxidase technique at the light microscope level, this study demonstrates the presence of calmodulin in several exocytotic cells (mast cells, thyroid follicular cells, neurohypophyseal neurosecretory terminals, pancreatic beta-cells and pancreatic acinus cells) in rat and man. The positive staining reaction for calmodulin was granular and at least in the case of rat mast cells it appeared to be associated with the granule membrane.  相似文献

Émilie Du Châtelet is well known for her French translation of Newton's Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica. It is the first and only French translation of Newton's magnum opus. The complete work appeared in 1759 under the title Principes mathématiques de la philosophie naturelle, par feue Madame la Marquise Du Chastellet. Before translating Newton's Principia, Du Châtelet worked on her Institutions de physique. In this book she defended the Leibnizian concept of living forces – vis viva. This paper argues that both of these works were part of a critical transformation and consolidation of post-Newtonian mechanics in the early 18th century, beyond Newton and Leibniz. This will be shown by comparing Du Châtelet's translation of Newton's axioms with her own formulations of the laws of motion in light of Thomas Le Seur's and François Jacquier's Geneva edition which holds a special place among the several editions of the Principia that appeared in the early 18th century.  相似文献

Summary Illumination during the photoinhibited phase of the development ofCoprinus congregatus reduced fruiting. This inhibitory effect of light was dependent on the radiant flux density and on temperature. Radiant fluxes far lower than the flux provided by moonlight elicited photoresponses.  相似文献

Members of the odorant-binding protein (OBP) and chemosensory protein (CSP) families were identified and characterised in the sensory tissues of the social wasp Polistes dominulus (Hymenoptera: Vespidae). Unlike most insects so far investigated, OBPs were detected in antennae, legs and wings, while CSPs appeared to be preferentially expressed in the antennae. The OBP is very different from the homologous proteins of other Hymenopteran species, with around 20% of identical residues, while the CSP appears to be much better conserved. Both OBP and CSP, not showing other post-translational modifications apart from disulphide bridges, were expressed with high yields in a bacterial system. Cysteine pairing in the recombinant and native proteins follows the classical arrangements described for other members of these classes of proteins. OBPs isolated from the wings were found to be associated with a number of long-chain aliphatic amides and other small organic molecules. We analyze the paper “The wave mechanics of $\alpha $ -ray tracks” Mott (Proc R Soc Lond A 126:79–84, 1929), published in 1929 by N. F. Mott. In particular, we discuss the theoretical context in which the paper appeared and give a detailed account of the approach used by the author and the main result attained. Moreover, we comment on the relevance of the work not only as far as foundations of Quantum Mechanics are concerned but also as the earliest pioneering contribution in decoherence theory.  相似文献

The antiviral activities of some naturally occurring anthraquinones bianthrones, and hypericin derivatives were compared by the end-point CPE (viral cytopathic effects) method and plaque assays. Under optimal conditions of exposure to light, hypericin, 7,7-dichlorohypericin and 5,7-dichloroemodin exhibited strong inhibitory activity against HSV-1 (herpes simplex virus type 1) in both assays. Partial inactivation of the virus was shown by emodin, 7-chloroemodin and 7-chloro-1-O-methylemodin; the bianthrones and other anthraquinones were found to be inactive. Antiviral activity appeared to be, positively correlated with increasing substitution of chlorine in the anthraquinone structure. In the absence of light, only hypericin and 7,7-dichlorohypericin displayed detectable activity.  相似文献

Summary Specific activities of NADP isocitrate dehydrogenase and acetylcholinesterase were significantly higher in muscle fibres differentiated, in vitro, from myoblasts of adductor magnus (red) than pectoralis major (white) muscles 10-day-old chick embryos.
