A simple interspike interval analyzer for study of neuronal spike trains

Summary A simple, low cost interspike interval analyzer for the analysis of trains of nerve impulses is described. The analyzer is built with readily available integrated circuits and has been used to analyze spike trains in the lateral vestibular nucleus of cats.Acknowledgment. A simple system for inspection of microelectrophoretic patterns.

An inexpensive device for inspection of electrophoretic patterns on microgels is described. A common slide frame is modified in order to hold inside microgels immersed in liquid, so that the gels may then be projected on paper screens. The electrophoretic patterns may be drawn on the basis of the gel images. Staff-meeting presentation of microelectrophoretic patterns seems to be another application of the system.     

A new simple assay for total blood lipids by refractometry.

A fast simple method for assay of total blood lipids has been devised by precipitating blood proteins with methanol and extracting lipids into diethyl ether. The change in refractive index of the methanol-ether due to dissolved lipids is measured in a refractometer.     

A simple one-step procedure for staining the nucleolus organizer regions.

A simple silver staining technique for routine use is described by which the nucleolus organizer regions of mammalian chromosomes, including those of mouse chromosomes, are stained selectively.     

Intrasplenic infusion. A simple method for intraportal infusion in rats

Summary A simple and time-saving method for intraportal acute or chronic infusion in the rat by the insertion of a catheter into the spleen is described. This method has proved to be especially useful for performing chronic infusions in conscious animals.The author thanks Providencia Cruz for excellent secretarial assistance. Zusammenfassung Unter Verwendung eines Polythänschlauches wurde ein Tintenschreiber (Gewicht 90–110 mg) zur Registrierung von Kontraktionen isolierter Organe konstruiert. Dieser Schreiber lässt sich mit Erfolg im physiologischen und pharmakologischen Pratikum verwenden.     

A simple method for observation of capillary nets in rat brain cortex.

By the authors' technic, the profiles of capillaries in rat brain cortex were clearly demonstrated. The capillaries formed complicated nets by sprouting of their finer branches and anastomosing with each other. Further, a kind of perivascular cells with yellow autofluorescent granules was distributed close to capillaries, arterioles or venules. The seemed to be a special form of macrophage in the brain cortex.     

A simple paper chromatographic method for the study of serum protein patterns in health and disease

Zusammenfassung Es wird eine einfache Methode zur Trennung und Differenzierung der Serumproteine mit Hilfe der Papierchromatographie (Rundfilter-Papierchromatographie) beschrieben. Die Chromatogramme zeigen charakteristische Unterschiede der Albumin- und Globulinfraktionen bei normalen Seren und bei Seren von Patienten mit Leberzirrhose.

A simple UV-microbeam for partial cell irradiation

Résumé On peut irradier les régions sous-cellulaires si la radiation UV d'un monochromateur est limitée par les ouvertures interchangeables de champ dans le plan de la pellicule photographique d'un appareil reflex, monté sur un microscope. L'image UV est démagnifiée par un oculaire et un objectif achromatique aussi bien à la lumière UV qu'à la lumière visible.     

A simple method for reduction of non-specific fluorescence

Résumé Cette technique pour la réduction de la fluorescence non-spécifique utilise diverses méthodes communes en une série spéciale. Premièrement, les anticorps fluorescents sont adsorbés avec la poudre du foie. Suivant la centrifugation, une colonne de Séphadex-25 est utilisée pour séparer la fluorescéine libre. La méthode contraire donne une fluorescence non-spécifique qui ressemble à celle obtenue avec une seule adsorption ou Séphadex filtration.     

A simple enzymatic method for isolation of hepatocytes

Summary A new method is described for isolating hepatocytes by an enzymatic procedure: 0.05% bacterial collagenase in calcium-free Hanks' solution is injected into the liver tissue which is removed aseptically. The time required to prepare culture and risk of bacterial and fungal contamination is greatly reduced.
