A cautionary note on pentacyanoammonioferrate use for determining L-canavanine occurrence in biological materials

Summary Caution must be taken in the prevelant use of the pentacyanoammonioferrate reagent for the detection of L-canavanine in biological materias. This reagent reacts with L-histidine at neutral pH to form a pentacyanoammonioferate-histidine complex that is mistaken readily for its canavanine-containing counterpart.This work was supported by a grant from the National Science Foundation (PCM-78-20167). The inhibition of cathepsin B by plasma haptoglobin biochemistry (enzymes,metabolism)

Summary Purified haptoglobin partially inhibits the activity of a lysosomal thiol proteinase, cathepsin B. This inhibition is reversible in the presence of monospecific antiserum to haptoglobin.This work was supported by an East Anglian Regional Health Authority Grant.     

Cortisol and immune interferon can interact in the modulation of human natural killer cell activity

This paper reports that cortisol at physiological concentrations minimizes the enhancement of human natural killer (NK) cell activity in vitro by immune interferon (IFN-gamma). This effect may be important for the regulation of NK cytotoxicity in vivo.     

Synthesis of N-aryl-N-glycolyl hydroxamic acids: Nonmicrosomal metabolites of nitrosoaromatics

Summary A method for the synthesis of N-aryl-N-glycolyl hydroxamic acids is described. This method consists of N-acylation of an arylhydroxylamine by glycolic acid in the presence of dicyclohexylcarbodiimide.This study was supported by grant No. CA 21668 from the National Cancer Institute, DHEW.     

Damage by ozone to the mechanical integrity of the protoplast plasmalemma

Summary Ozone acts on the plasmalemma as to weaken its mechanical properties. This results in the bursting of protoplasts.This work was carried ont with the help of a grant by the FCAC, Ministère de l'Education du Québec, Canada.     

Karyological conservatism in South American camelids

Summary Llama, guanaco, vicuna and alpaca show similar diploid numbers, gross chromosomal morphology and homologous G, C and NOR banding patterns. This chromosomal homology is also found in the two-humped camel and very probably in the one-humped camel as well. These findings indicate that the camelid karyotype can probably be traced back to early Miocene times. This probably represents the most extreme case of chromosomal conservatism among mammals.This work was supported by grants from the Organization of American States and SECYT.Acknowledgments. A technical improvement in the radioimmunoassay of cyclic-AMP.

An improvement in the technique for the radioimmunoassay of cyclic-AMP, wherein ammonium sulfate precipitation is replaced with zirconyl phosphate gel, is presented. This substitution produces a more stable pellet than that obtained with ammonium sulfate. This greatly reduces a potential source of error due to pellet instability.     

Phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase assay on polyacrylamide gels

Summary A simple technique to identify, PEP carboxylase on polyacrylamide gels is described. This method involves in the formation of white ring of calcium phosphate precipitate on the reaction site, revealing the presence of enzyme protein.This work was supported by PL-480 (USDA), project FG-IN-526.     

Comparison of human adult and fetal hemoglobin: Aminophenol-induced methemoglobin formation

Summary Human fetal hemoglobin was more susceptible to methemoglobin formation in the presence of aminophenols than was adult hemoglobin. This was due to the intrinsic properties of the proteins rather than the presence of methemoglobin reductases.This work was supported by a grant from the National Institute of General Medical Sciences GM-17184.     

Papaverine enhances the negative inotropic effect of acetylcholine in rat auricles

Summary The negative inotropic effect of acetylcholine in rat left auricles is enhanced in the presence of the phosphodiesterase inhibitor papaverine. This result favours the idea of a cyclic GMP-mediated action of acetylcholine in the heart.I thank Lydia Paragnik for help. The isolation,identification and synthesis of the alarm pheromone ofVespula squamosa (Drury) (Hymenoptera: Vespidae) and associated behavior

Summary A material that elicits alarm and attack behavior byVespula squamosa (Drury) workers was isolated from venom extracts and identified by spectroscopic methods as N-3-methylbutylacetamide. This compound elicited attack responses from worker wasps identical to those responses observed when venom was applied at the same dosage. Adrenal gland growth of the ovine fetus in the end of gestation: evolution of DNA and of membrane proteins]

The adrenal weight of the ovine fetus increases dramatically during late pregnancy. This increase is achieved in three periods: one of DNA duplication between two phases of cellular hypertrophy. During cellular hypertrophy an important biosynthesis of membrane proteins is observed. This development concerns essentially the adrenal cortex.

Effect of parathyroidectomy on the fasting-refeeding response in the rat colon

Following fasting and refeeding, the colonic epithelium of the rat exhibits a marked hyperplasia. This response is of a similar magnitude but of a longer duration to that observed in mice. This response is not affected by reducing serum calcium levels to those reported to alter normal tissue proliferation in vivo.     

Evolution of the genetic code, protein synthesis and nucleic acid replication

A better definition of the structural and thermodynamic determinants of the interaction of nucleic acids with proteins is shedding light on the origin of the genetic code, protein synthesis, and nucleic acid replication. This is also allowing to show a consistent biochemical framework for the appearance of these fundamental synthetic mechanisms. This article reviews recent significant developments in the field, and discusses an integrated model for a biochemically plausible evolution of these fundamental mechanisms of synthesis. This model is based on sequence-specific interactions between abiotically synthesized polynucleotides and polypeptides, and can account for a coordinate evolution of the genetic code, protein synthesis, and nucleic acid replication in living cells.     

基于Windows CE的车载监控系统软件设计与实现

本文采用面向对象的程序设计思想设计并实现了铁路大型捣固车的监控系统软件。该系统软件主要对捣固车上的重要电气参数和作业状态信息进行处理、显示、传输。本文对该系统软件各个功能模块分别说明,给出了相应的流程图,并详细说明了作业质量算法。     

The effect of homogenization temperature upon the apparent cellular compartmentalization of unoccupied estrogen receptor

Homogenization of rat uterus at elevated temperatures results in an increased nuclear localization of unoccupied estrogen receptor. This is a nonlinear effect which is accounted for by an increased population of KCl-resistant nuclear binding sites at the elevated homogenization temperatures.This work was supported by NSF Research Grant PCM-8409586.     

Forecasting Monetary Policy Decisions in Australia: A Forecast Combinations Approach

This paper applies a triple‐choice ordered probit model, corrected for nonstationarity to forecast monetary decisions of the Reserve Bank of Australia. The forecast models incorporate a mix of monthly and quarterly macroeconomic time series. Forecast combination is used as an alternative to one multivariate model to improve accuracy of out‐of‐sample forecasts. This accuracy is evaluated with scoring functions, which are also used to construct adaptive weights for combining probability forecasts. This paper finds that combined forecasts outperform multivariable models. These results are robust to different sample sizes and estimation windows. Copyright © 2011 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.     

Mill and Lewis on laws,experimentation, and systematization

Mill appears to be committed to two incompatible accounts of laws. While he seems to defend a Humean account of laws similar to Ramsey’s and Lewis’s, he also appears to rely on modal notions to distinguish lawful relations from accidental regularities. This paper will show that Mill’s two accounts of laws are in fact equivalent. This equivalence results from a proper understanding of the necessity involved in laws and a proper understanding of systematization. This equivalence reveals the true source of the intimate connection between laws and systematization. Mill also provides an account of natural necessity that makes clear why experimentation is essential for gaining knowledge of laws. In contrast, Lewis’s account will be shown to have counterintuitive consequences regarding the relationship between laws and experimentation. Moreover, it will be shown that Mill’s views about inference result in a distinction between two modes of systematizing: subsumption and derivation. This distinction is overlooked in contemporary accounts of systematization, but Mill rightly notes that the metaphysical implications and epistemic role of these two modes are importantly different.
