Multiple overwintering mechanisms inChymomyza amoena larvae (Diptera: Drosophilidae) and laboratory induction of freeze tolerance

Summary Chymomyza amoena larvae in apples in summer were found to be either potentially freeze tolerant or to supercool. By late September only potentially freeze tolerant larvae were recovered from apples. Larvae from walnut husks in winter supercooled to avoid freezing. However, freeze tolerance could be induced in laboratory grown larvae by placing them in apples around the seed area and maintaining them at chilling temperatures for several weeks. Overwintering mechanisms employed byC. amoena larvae in Michigan appear to depend upon larval feeding site.Prof. Davis at Michigan Agricultural College placed 9C. amoena emerging from apples in August and Sept. 1891 along with codling moth in the MAC (=MSU) Entomological Museum collection.     

Aggregated oviposition byChymomyza amoena (Diptera: Drosophilidae)

Summary Aggregated oviposition byChymomyza amoena in Virginia and Michigan has been shown to be due to egg clustering, females attracted to fruits on whichC. amoena females have already oviposited, and to variation in fruit attractiveness. Negative binomialk values support behavioral similarities among females of this rarely seen species in both states. Discovery ofC. amoena in Europe may indicate that this larval overwintering drosophilid has a Holarctic distribution.The research in Virginia during summer 1986, conducted at Mt. Lake Biological Station, was supported by a fellowship from the University of Virginia. Forecasting private consumption: survey‐based indicators vs. Google trends

In this study we introduce a new indicator for private consumption based on search query time series provided by Google Trends. The indicator is based on factors extracted from consumption‐related search categories of the Google Trends application Insights for Search. The forecasting performance of the new indicator is assessed relative to the two most common survey‐based indicators: the University of Michigan Consumer Sentiment Index and the Conference Board Consumer Confidence Index. The results show that in almost all conducted in‐sample and out‐of‐sample forecasting experiments the Google indicator outperforms the survey‐based indicators. This suggests that incorporating information from Google Trends may offer significant benefits to forecasters of private consumption. Copyright © 2011 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.     

Anti-estrogen inhibition of testosterone-stimulated aggression in mice

Summary Testosterone-stimulated intermale aggression in castrated mice can be reversibly inhibited by anti-estrogen administration suggesting that estrogen formation and actions in the brain may be required for testosterone's behavioral actions.Supported by Grant HD-07049 from the National Institutes of Health. Manipulating the activity of immobilized enzymes with different organo-smectite complexes

Summary Enzymes may be immobilized on hydrophobic surfaces of organo-smectite complexes. The immobilized enzyme may be active, partially active, or inactive depending on the nature of the organic surface. These materials may be useful as models for enzymes in natural systems, and in medicine and industry.This work was partially supported by the National Science Foundation under Grant No. CHE-8306583. Interaction between aldosterone and renomedullary prostaglandins. Competitive action between aspirin and spironolactone

Summary Aldosterone injected i.m. decreased the release of renomedullary PGEs and the index (urinary Na/K ratio) in conscious normotensive intact and adrenalectomized rats. Coadministration of spironolactone increased the release of PGEs as well as the index (urinary Na/K ratio). The effect of spironolactone was partly inhibited by aspirin injected in a ratio 51 (aspirin: spironolactone), an effect which could be reversed by the infusion of a synthetic prostaglandin (PGA₂) in a subhypotensive dose.Acknowledgements. Plasma glycoproteins of diabetic and normal Chinese hamsters

Summary Plasma hexosamine levels were elevated in lines of diabetic Chinese hamsters when compared to nondiabetics. Plasma protein bound hexoses,a ₂ macroglobulin and total lipoprotein levels were not significantly correlated with either animal line or levels of fasting blood glucose.Acknowledgments. Overwintering ofChymomyza amoena larvae in apples in Michigan and preliminary studies on the mechanism of cold hardiness

Summary Chymomyza amoena, a member of the family Drosophilidae, is now breeding in fallen apples in the state of Michigan.C. amoena larvae can overwinter in fallen apples, completing development and emerging as adults in the summer. Cold resistance during the overwintering phase may not depend upon the accumulation of glycerol or other sugar alcohols.     

Value disputes in urban ecological restoration: Lessons from the Chicago Wilderness

As a practice to facilitate the recovery of degraded ecosystems, ecological restoration is an inherently value-laden endeavor. Urban ecological restoration further underlines the complexity of value-ladenness involved by situating restoration in politically, ethically, epistemically, and otherwise normatively heterogenous social contexts. One such context that is particularly rich in opportunities for both significant restoration projects and social disputes about the value of such projects is the Chicago Wilderness, a region comprised of a variety of ecosystems on public and private lands across Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, and Michigan. Here I offer a close reading of value disputes in the Chicago Wilderness among ecologists, practitioners, policymakers, activists, and journalists over the aims, methods, and constitutive activities of urban ecological restoration.

Desiccation in the black dragon,Hagenius brevistylus Selys

Summary Hagenius brevistylus lost mass by evaporation in a moderately desiccating environment at the rate of 20.4 mg h^–1, and died of desiccation in less than 1 day at a body mass of 79.8% of their normally hydrated mass. It was estimated thatHagenius minimally would have to consume the equivalent of 60% of its body mass each day to meet its daily water requirements. This amount of food is equivalent to that necessary to power flight of a dragonfly for 4.6h.This research was financed in part by a grant from the American Philosophical Society to C.R.T., and was conducted at the University of Michigan Biological Station, Douglas Lake (USA).     

Effects of duration of gonadectomy,sex and age on adrenal steroid 5α-reductase activity in the rat

Summary Within 6–8 weeks, gonadectomy in male and female rats leads to an increase in adrenal 5-steroid reductase activity. However, long-term post-orchiectomy enzyme activity decreases to the control level and this effect is not related to the age of animals.Supported in part by grant No.564/VI from Polish Academy of Sciences. Evaluating the role judgment plays in forecast accuracy

The majority of model-based forecasting efforts today rely on relatively simple techniques of estimation and the subjective adjustment of the model's results to produce forecasts. Published forecasts reflect to a great extent the judgment of the forecaster rather than what the model by itself has to say about the future. This paper examines the role judgment plays in the process of producing a macroeconometric forecast. The debate over the use of adjustment constants to alter the statistical results of a model is outlined and an empirical analysis of forecasts generated by the Michigan Quarterly Econometric Model of the US economy is presented using a unique data set which isolates the role of judgment in the forecasting process.     

Merging monthly and quarterly forecasts: Experience with mqem

Forecasts from quarterly econometric models are typically revised on a monthly basis to reflect the information in current economic data. The revision process usually involves setting targets for the quarterly values of endogenous variables for which monthly observations are available and then altering the intercept terms in the quarterly forecasting model to achieve the target values. A formal statistical approach to the use of monthly data to update quarterly forecasts is described and the procedure is applied to the Michigan Quarterly Econometric Model of the US Economy. The procedure is evaluated in terms of both ex post and ex ante forecasting performance. The ex ante results for 1986 and 1987 indicate that the method is quite promising. With a few notable exceptions, the formal procedure produces forecasts of GNP growth that are very close to the published ex ante forecasts.     

Vascular reactivity in hypertension: Altered effect of ouabain

Summary Ouabain inhibits the relaxing effect of Ca²⁺ (but not of Mn²⁺) on contractile responses in tail artery strips isolated from spontaneously hypertensive and normotensive rats. The magnitude of ouabain inhibition was greater in vascular strips from hypertensive rats suggesting a significant difference in basic membrane function in hypertensive vascular smooth muscle.These studies were supported by National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute grants HL-03765 and HL-18575-02-03. R.C. Webb is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow of the Michigan Heart Association.     

Deficiency in renomedullary prostaglandin synthesis related to the evolution of essential hypertension

Summary Continued PG synthesis in the early stages of essential hypertension might reflect an activation of the renal antihypertensive function in respect to neurogenic and/or hormonal pression stimuli, subsequently a deficiency of renal PG synthesis related to irreversible changes with the kidney would lead to the prepoderance of a pressure mechanism, resulting to a further increase of blood pressure.We thank Dr.J. The effects of cyclophosphamide and nor-nitrogen mustard administration to one-day-old mice

Zusammenfassung Störung der normalen Entwicklung und des Wachstums ein Tag alter Mäuse wurde durch Injektion von Cyclophosphamid verursacht. Verabreichung von Nor-Chlormethin zeigte keine derartigen Effekte und es wird vermutet, dass diese Unterschiede durch die pharmakokinetischen Eigenschaften dieser Stoffe verursacht sein könnten.

Serendipitous precise and unique staining of cell nuclei

Zusammenfassung Frischgefrorene Gewebesektionen verschiedener Gewebe wurden in Kalium-Eisen-Cyanid bei pH 5,2 inkubiert; dabei wurde eine präzise und einzigartige Färbung nur der Zellnuklei beobachtet. Die Ursache dieser selektiven Kernfärbung ist nicht verständlich, doch stellt sie höchstwahrscheinlich eine Färbung von Ferro-Verbindungen in den Nuklei dar.
