Enlightenments for Young Learners English teaching in the Perspective of Maslow’s Theory

Children are the center of young learner’s English teaching. Their motivation and interest are capable of guiding them English learning effectively. Only when the young learners are motivated and stimulated can they learn English well in an active and harmonious atmosphere. This paper first analyses the factors causing the lack of learning motivation of young English learners. Then, based on Maslow’s theory, the author puts forward some effective teaching methods and strategies, hoping to be helpful to motivate the young learners to learn English.     

Cross-cultural Pragmatic Failures and Language Teaching

In cross-cultural communication, it is found that many communicational aims could not be successfully achieved, even if the speaker is good at using the target language. The problem may lie in the insufficient awareness of the cultural differences. This paper aims to point out the importance of cross-cultural communication in language teaching by discussing the different types of the cross-cultural pragmatic failures.     

Six Tentative Approaches to Culture Acquisition in English Learning in China

EFL teachers in China have come to realize that EFL teaching does not stop at the students’ linguistic competence, but should go on to develop their communicative competence. To achieve this,it is essential for both teachers and students to be conscious of the sociolinguistic functions of languages and take measures to increase their cultural awareness. Therefore, this article suggests some tentative approaches to culture acquisition in English learning,in the hope of increasing efficiency of English learning for the Chinese students.     

Study of Politeness in Cross Cultural Communication

Politeness is a universal linguistic phenomenon but also relative by nature and subject to culture. The politeness in pragmatic study and its cultural specificity in cross cultural communication are explained. Some tactics in cross communication are also suggested.     

Strategies of More and Less Successful Bai High School EFL Learners

This study airm to explore the choice of language learning strategies between more and lesssuccessful Bai high school EFL learners for whom English is learned as a third language. Sixteen Bai EFLlearners were involved in the current study. A background questionnaire and the Oxford‘ s SILL Question-naire were administered to the participants, and semi - structured interviews were conducted. The reported data indicate that successful learners employed more strategies than less successful ones did andnitive strategies best predicted learning success. Individual strategies used by both successful and lesssuccessful Bai EFL learners were outlined and discussed. The paper concludes with implications of the studyand recommendations for the extension of research in this area.

Humor is a wisdom,which reflects a person＇s character,mind and educational level.Humor can be revealed in many ways,yet mainly by means of language.Starting from the analysis of the language of English humor,this paper studies the ways of English humor,especially the English humor on the violation of Cooperative Principle.By analyzing the relationship of English humor and the Cooperative Principle,this paper aims at bettering our understanding and comprehension of the Cooperative Principle and English humor.

On the Cross-cultural Pragmatic Failure in Interpretation

Interpretation is a face-to-face cross-cultural communication.Understanding and avoiding pragmatic failure is of great significance to interpretation.Guided by the theory of pragmatic failure in pragmatics,this paper analyses pragmatic failure,i.e.pragmatic-linguistic failure and socio-pragmatic failure,which frequently emerge in interpretation,aiming at reducing misunderstanding in communication.

Values Manifested in English-Chinese Translation

Translating is a cross-cultural activity,and value is an important element of it.Therefore,it is undoubtedly that value will play an important role in English-Chinese translation,which is a learned organization of rules for making choices and resolving conflicts.These rules may serve to teach us to distinguish right and wrong,good and evil,what can be done and what cannot be.Accordingly,in this thesis,the notable differences in values in English-Chinese translation will be firstly dealt with,and then the main presentations of the value differences in English-Chinese translation will be analyzed.Furthermore,some effective methods to solve value-bound problems in English-Chinese translation will be discussed.

The Role of Context in Interpretation

In this paper, we＇ll explore the role of context in the interpretation of a piece of discourse. We＇ll present three context models put forward respectively by Firth, Hymes and Lewis. We＇ll also take into consideration the features of co-text and expanding context. At last, we＇ll throw some light on the problem of what aspects of the apparently illimitable features of context are relevant to a particular communicative act.
