Summary Transfer of light-grown maize seedlings to dark causes a loss in the contents of chlorophyll, protein and RNA of leaves, and a decline in DCPIP photoreduction by isolated chloroplasts. The loss in DCPIP-Hill reaction is attributed to the dark stress-induced damage of O2 evolving system of thylakoid membranes.Acknowledgment. We thank Prof. M.C. The cell division cycle of Synechococcus sp. strain PCC 6301 in light is characterized by the sequential and orderly appearance of macromolecular synthesis periods. In the dark, macromolecular synthesis and cell division are severely curtailed. When dark-incubated cultures are reexposed to light, a new cell cycle is initiated. The pattern of the cell events displayed by Synechococcus in light and the absence of sustained growth in dark incubation conditions suggests that light-activated regulatory molecules control macromolecular synthesis and the cell division cycle. For example, ribosomal RNA synthesis is stimulated by a light-activated DNA binding factor in light but not in the dark. Light/dark conditions induce cell synchrony in Prochlorococcus. Distinct G1, S and G2 phases characterize cell cycles of marine Synechococcus and Prochlorococcus. Cell division in Synechococcus elongatus PCC 7942 and marine Synechococcus is controlled by circadian oscillators.  相似文献

Summary The LD50 of i.p. injected diazepam was determined every 4 h over a 24-h period in albino mice adapted to a 12-h dark/12-h light programmed illumination cycle. Results show that diazepam is more toxic during the light phase of the cycle than during the dark phase and demonstrate circadian variation in the toxicity of the compound in mice.  相似文献

Galaxies are the basic structural element of the universe; galaxy formation theory seeks to explain how these structures came to be. I trace some of the foundational ideas in galaxy formation, with emphasis on the need for non-baryonic cold dark matter. Many elements of early theory did not survive contact with observations of low surface brightness galaxies, leading to the need for auxiliary hypotheses like feedback. The failure points often trace to the surprising predictive successes of an alternative to dark matter, the Modified Newtonian Dynamics (MOND). While dark matter models are flexible in accommodating observations, they do not provide the predictive capacity of MOND. If the universe is made of cold dark matter, why does MOND get any predictions right?  相似文献

According to modern physics and cosmology, the universe expands at an increasing rate as the result of a “dark energy” that characterizes empty space. Although dark energy is a modern concept, some elements in it can be traced back to the early part of the twentieth century. I examine the origin of the idea of zero-point energy, and in particular how it appeared in a cosmological context in a hypothesis proposed by Walther Nernst in 1916. The hypothesis of a zero-point vacuum energy attracted some attention in the 1920s, but without attempts to relate it to the cosmological constant that was discussed by Georges Lemaître in particular. Only in the late 1960s, was it recognized that there is a connection between the cosmological constant and the quantum vacuum. As seen in retrospect, many of the steps that eventually led to the insight of a kind of dark energy occurred isolated and uncoordinated.  相似文献

Summary Pineal N-acetyltransferase (NAT) activity in the ground squirrel, a diurnal mammal, was found to have a daily fluctuation with peak activity during the dark time. This same daily change is found in nocturnal mammals and diurnal birds. NAT may play an important role in keeping track of light and dark cycles.Support was provided by NSF PCM-76-09682 to S. We examined the rabbit retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) for Na transport properties which would allow it to buffer undesirable changes in Na concentrations in the interphotoreceptor matrix (IPM) during light and dark cycles. The RPE is selectivity permeable to sodium. Open and short circuit transport studies with RPE indicate a circulating (choroid to retina and back) Na current which does not compromise the electrical integrity of the blood brain barrier but together with the Na permeselectivity is of sufficient magnitude to buffer both upwards and downwards movements of IPM [Na] during light or dark responses.  相似文献

Summary The effects of exposure to sudden transitions from dark to light (D/L) and light to dark (L/D) were determined on the free running circadian feding rhythm of European stalings (Sturnus vulgaris). D/L transitions (step-up) produced phase advances throughout the circadian cycle. In contrast L/D transitions (step-down) produced both advances and delays. The L/D transition phase-response curve has a contour and shape similar to the phase-response curves previously obtained in birds with light pulses.  相似文献

The diatom Navicula ostrearia, grown under small quantities, was synchronized in diurnally intermittent illuminations of 16 hour light and 8 hour dark. Summary The mosaic arrangement of retinal cones in the eye of the African cichlid fish,Haplochromis burtoni, is the same in both light and dark adapted states. This is in contrast to Kunz' claim2 that the retinal mosaic pattern changes from a square to a row type during dark adaptation, in the guppy (Poecelia reticulata). The endogenous ligands of cannabinoid receptors, also known as endocannabinoids, have been implicated in many physiological and pathological processes of the central nervous system. Here we show that the levels of the two major endocannabinoids, anandamide and 2-arachidonoyl-glycerol (2-AG), in four areas of the rat brain, change dramatically between the light and dark phases of the day. While anandamide levels in the nucleus accumbens, pre-frontal cortex, striatum and hippocampus were significantly higher in the dark phase, the opposite was observed with 2-AG, whose levels were significantly higher during the light phase in all four regions. We found that the activity of the fatty acid amide hydrolase, which catalyzes the metabolism of anandamide, was significantly lower during the dark phase, thus providing a possible explaination for the increase in anandamide levels. However, the activities of monoacylglycerol lipase and diacylglycerol lipase, two of the possible enzymes catalyzing the degradation and biosynthesis of 2-AG, respectively, changed significantly only in the striatum. These data suggest that the levels of the two major endocannabinoids might be under the control of endogenous factors known to undergo diurnal variations, and underscore the different roles, suggested by previous studies, of anandamide and 2-AG in neurophysiological processes.Received 9 December 2003; received after revision 15 January 2004; accepted 20 January 2004  相似文献

The renal handling of unconjugated bilirubin in the dark and during light exposure was analyzed using an isolated rat kidney preparation. The parameters tested were pigment disappearance from the perfusion medium, pigment uptake by tissue, and its renal clearance. The results indicated that despite the fact that pigment disappearance from the medium was similar for both forms of pigment, the extraction ratio was higher for irradiated pigment than for pigment in the dark. When renal clearance of pigment was plotted vs pigment uptake of tissue, the results indicated that irradiated pigment may be more efficiently removed by the kidney. In addition, data on the rate of secretion of p-aminohippurate suggested that both pigment forms shared a common site for secretion.  相似文献

A melatonin rhythm was observed in the pineals of 18-day-old chick embryos incubated under a light-dark regime of 18: 6 h. A low pineal melatonin content was found during the light phase of the day. Concentrations started to increase 2 h after dark onset and reached maximum levels after 4 h of darkness. The amplitude of the pineal melatonin rhythm increased considerably after 2 days and night-time concentrations in 20-day-old embryos were more than 5 times higher than in 18-day-old ones. Significant day/night differences in melatonin production were found both in pineals and eyes. Exposure of eggs to 1 h of light during the dark period decreased the high melatonin concentrations in the eyes but not in the pineals of the 20-day-old chick embryo. The results suggest that in this precocial bird at least part of the circadian system may already operate during embryonic life.  相似文献

I argue that some important elements of the current cosmological model are 'conventionalist’ in the sense defined by Karl Popper. These elements include dark matter and dark energy; both are auxiliary hypotheses that were invoked in response to observations that falsified the standard model as it existed at the time. The use of conventionalist stratagems in response to unexpected observations implies that the field of cosmology is in a state of 'degenerating problemshift’ in the language of Imre Lakatos. I show that the 'concordance’ argument, often put forward by cosmologists in support of the current paradigm, is weaker than the convergence arguments that were made in the past in support of the atomic theory of matter or the quantization of energy.  相似文献
