Nitric oxide and cellular respiration

The role of nitric oxide (NO) as a signalling molecule involved in many pathophysiological processes (e.g., smooth muscle relaxation, inflammation, neurotransmission, apoptosis) has been elaborated during the last decade. Since NO has also been found to inhibit cellular respiration, we review here the available information on the interactions of NO with cytochrome c oxidase (COX), the terminal enzyme of the respiratory chain. The effect of NO on cellular respiration is first summarized to present essential evidence for the fact that NO is a potent reversible inhibitor of in vivo O2 consumption. This information is then correlated with available experimental evidence on the reactions of NO with purified COX. Finally, since COX has been proposed to catalyze the degradation of NO into either nitrous oxide (N2O) or nitrite, we consider the putative role of this enzyme in the catabolism of NO in vivo.

Inhibition of nuclear and mitochondrial respiration by arsenite

Résumé La respiration des noyaux isolés du thymus de rat est inhibée par l'arsénite à une concentration 10 fois supérieure à celle qui inhibe la respiration mitochondriale. Ce fait suggère, une difficulté de pénétration à travers la membrane nucleaire et ne rend pas compte de la différence entre le méchanisme de la phosphorylation oxydative des noyaux et celle des mitochondria.     

Stimulation by D-glucose of mitochondrial respiration

D-glucose increases O2 uptake by cerebellum mitochondria. This effect is abolished by D-glucose-6-phosphate and D-mannoheptulose. It is proposed that the phosphorylation of D-glucose as catalyzed by bound hexokinase directly affects mitochondrial respiration.

Ultradian and other rhythms in human respiration rate

Summary Twelve male subjects had their respiration rate (RR) measured at 3 min intervals for 6 h. Although there were substantial individual differences, most subjects demonstrated a 90±15 min rhythm of RR, with several subjects also showing 60±10 min and 30±3 min rhythms.     

The effect of camphor on mitochondrial respiration

Summary Camphor at <8 moles/mg protein reduced the rate of oxygen consumption by rat liver mitochondria. The effect occurs only with NAD⁺-linked substrates. Succinate linked respiration was inhibited but this appears to be caused by some conversion of succinate to malate. At higher levels, camphor increases oxygen consumption with succinate substrate, by uncoupling at site II.Acknowledgment. 一种基于差分的彩色航空影像阴影检测方法

针对彩色航空影像阴影检测中植被容易被误检的问题,提出了一种基于像素间差分的阴影检测算法。建立植被检测指数,对植被区域进行预检测,提高阴影检测的精度。检测实验表明,本文算法能较好的对存在植被区域的遥感影像进行阴影检测。     

A comparative approach to fish respiration

Zusammenfassung Es wird ein Überblick über neuere Forschungen gegeben, die das weite Arbeitsgebiet des Mechanismus der Fischatmung betreffen. Nachdruck wird auf den vergleichenden Standpunkt einer solchen Forschungsarbeit gelegt, wobei gezeigt wird, dass die Wahl besonderer Spezies ein förderndes Licht auf allgemein wichtige Probleme werfen kann, die bei Kiemenuntersuchungen sowohl auf der Makrostrukturstufe wie auf der Ultrastrukturstufe auftreten. Vom physiologischen Standpunkt aus gesehen, erweisen sich einige Arten auf Grund ihrer Lebensweise für experimentelle Untersuchungen ihres Sauerstoffverbrauchs besonders geeignet. Die strukturelle Anordnung des Pumpenmechanismus anderer Arten erleichert wiederum äusserst günstig die Direktmessung des Ventilationsvolumens und anderer mit dem Gasaustausch zusammenhängender Parameter.

Oscillatory respiration in balanus amphitrite darwin

Résumé ChezBalanus amphitrite, espèce des eaux chaudes, l'utilisation de l'oxygène par des individus isolés (extraits de leur coquille), soumis à une température peu élevée est de forme oscillatoire, contrairement à ce que l'on observe chez des espèces des eaux froides. Il se peut que cette différence caractérise de manière générale deux types d'espèces.     

Microbiological hydroxylation of certain indole alkaloids

Zusammenfassung Aerobe Kulturen vonCunninghamella Blakesleana Lendner hydroxylieren Apoyohimbin,-Yohimbinmethyläther und 3-Epiapoyohimbin in der 10-Stellung. Aus Apoyohimbin wurde auch ein zweites Umwandlungsprodukt erhalten, vermutlich 18-Hydroxyapoyohimbin.     

Analgesic activity of certain tripeptide-beta-phenethylamide analogs

Studies of the analgesic effect of tripeptide-beta-phenethylamides are described, and their structure-activity relationship is discussed. SD-25, which has a methyl group at R2, and a hydroxymethyl group at R3 of beta-phenethylamide, was the most potent one of the 8 analogs tested.
