China will complete stationing of peta operations per second supercomputer labs across the country in 2012, discloses Chen Guoliang, CAS academician and director of China Computer Federation Technical Committee on High Performance Computing recently.     

Antisense expression of a rice cellular apoptosis susceptibility gene (OsCAS) alters the height of transgenic rice

Cellular apoptosis susceptibility (CAS) gene plays important roles in mitosis, development and export of importin α from the nucleus, but its function in plant is unknown. In this study, a rice CAS ortholog (OsCAS), which encodes a predicted protein of 983 amino acids with 62% similarity to human CAS, was identified. DNA gel blot analysis revealed a single copy of OsCAS in the rice genome. A 973 bp fragment at the 3′ end of OsCAS cDNA was cloned from rice cDNA library and transferred into rice in the antisense direction under the control of CaMV 35S promoter via Agrobacterium-mediated transformation method, 105 transgenic lines were obtained. Expression of OsCAS was suppressed in the antisense transgenic lines as revealed by semi-quantitative RT-PCR. The antisense transgenic lines showed dwarf phenotypes. The results indicated that OsCAS was involved in culm development of rice.

Tsinghua Alumnus Academician Wu Zhengyi Won 2007 National S＆T Top Award

The annual national science-technology award ceremony was held at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on January 8, 2008. Renowned botanist Wu Zhengyi, a Tsinghua alumnus, and petrochemical scientist Min Enze won the 2007 State S＆T top awards for their outstanding achievements. Chinese President Hu Jintao and other senior leaders including Wen Jiabao, Li Changchun, Xi Jinping, and Li Keqiang, attended the ceremony. Chinese Presi- dent Hu presented the award to two scientists. Botanist Wu, 91, has been engaged in botanical research and education for 70 years. The botany professor, also a CAS senior academician, graduated from the biology department of Tsinghua University in 1937 and later became director of the botany institute of CAS.     

William Blake and His ＂London＂

＂Aha!＂ effects in a guessing Chinese logogriph task： An event-related potential study

In the present study, high-density event-related potentials （ERPs） were recorded to examine the electrophysiologic correlates of ＂Aha!＂ effects in a guessing Chinese Iogogriph task by using a two-stage model for learning-testing. Results showed that： Firstly Successful Guessing elicited a more negative ERP deflection （N350） than Recognition did in the time window from 300--350 ms after onset of the stimuli. A voltage map of the difference wave （Successful Guessing minus Recognition） showed strong activity at the front-central region. Dipole analysis localized the generator of the N350 in the vicinity of the posterior cingulate cortex （PCC） and the inferior frontal gyrus. Secondly, a greater late positive component （LPC） in Successful Guessing than Recognition was found between 600 and 700 ms post-stimulus. Dipole analysis localized the generator of LPC in the right parahippocampal gyrus.     

Brief introduction to the State Key Laboratory of Estuarine and Coastal Research (SKLEC)

The State Key Laboratory of Estuarine and Coastal Research (SKLEC) located in the East China Normal University (ECNU), Shanghai, was established on the basis of 30 years'studies on estuarine and coastal sedimentary dynamics and dynamic geomorphology at this university.
