Scanning electron microscopic observation of sperimophage cell within the lumen of the epididymal duct of the vasectomized Japanese monkey (Macacus fuscatus)

Summary The spermiophagic process by intraluminal macrophages in the epididymal ducts of the vasectomized Japanese monkey was well visualized with scanning electron microscope. The fragments of disintegrated spermatozoa were seen in the phase enveloped in bulk by flap-like cytoplasmic extensions or in the phase ingested within the cytoplasm.     

Clara cell surface of the rat: scanning and transmission electron microscopic study

Summary In normal young rats, groups of Clara cells in the bronchioles showed the formation of many cytoplasmic blebs on their cytoplasmic domes. Detached blebs rested on the bronchiolar epithelial cells. The scanning (SEM) and transmision electron microscope (TEM) studies suggest localized changes of Clare cell surface activities by increased formation of cytoplasmic blebs which may represent the apocrine type of secretion.This project was supported by research grants from NIH HD-10139 and the American Heart Association, Kansas Affiliate. We used the Electron Microscope Research Service Laboratory of the University of Kansas Medical Center.     

Scanning and transmission electron microscopic evidence of epithelial phagocytosis of spermatozoa in the terminal region of the vas deferens of the cat

Summary Scanning and transmission electron microscopic observations have been made in the terminal region of the vas deferens of the cat, with emphasis on the occurrence of spermiophagy. The present study has revealed that epithelial cells as well as luminal macrophages are extensively and actively involved in phagocytosis of spermatozoa. The mechanism of the spermiophagy is discussed, in relation to a possible role of the epithelial cells, as one function of the vas deferens.

FITC-dextrans as fluorescence and electron microscopic tracers in studies on capillary and cell permeability of the CNS

FITC-dextrans can be detected at the ultrastructural level as round electron dense particles, with no sign of distortion or aggregation. Because this tracer is a stable, non-toxic polymer of biological origin obtainable in a wide range of molecular weights, it may be useful for further studies of tissue permeability.

Position of the nucleolus within the nuclei of pachytene spermatocytes of Dromiciops australis and Marmosa elegans (Didelphoidea-Marsupialia).

The location of the nucleoli within the nuclei of pachytene spermatocytes, and their relation with the position of the nucleolar organizer region (NOR) was studied. It appears that a terminal NOR determines a peripheral location of the nucleolus, due to the position of the NOR over the synaptonemal complex and to the attachment of the nucleolar chromosome telomeres at the nuclear membrane.     

A scanning electron microscopic study of the air and blood capillaries of the lung of the domestic fowl (Gallus domesticus)

Summary Air and blood capillaries of the lung of the domestic fowl constitute the functional gas exchange units. They anastomose profusely and interlace with each other in 3 dimensions. The influence of the sex-hormone testosterone on body temperature and metabolism of the male Japanese quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica).

Testosterone causes a significant body temperature decrease in male quails. Oxygen consumption/g b. wt remains the same, however.     

Scanning electron microscopy study of membrane modification of blastomeres in the first stages of ovum development in trout (Salmo irideus Gibb.)]

Our study relates to the development of the membrane relief of the blastomeres of the trout egg from the stage before their division up to gastrulation. The surface of the blastoderm shows first a more or less dense system of crests which by the time of gastrulation are replaced by microvilli distributed over the whole surface of the enveloping layer. The deep blastomeres, loosely connected to each other by lamellipodes and filopodes produce only a few projections of their membranes and these are only semispherical bodies. Possible roles of the microvillosities in the respiratory exchange of the egg and in the motility of the enveloping layer, are considered.     

The early differentiation of the perinotochordal connective tissue. A scanning and transmission electron microscopic study on chick embryos (author's transl)]

The early differentiation of the connective tissue was investigated in the perinotochordal zone of 2-3 day-old chick embryos. After characterizing the different tissue components by transmission electron microscopy, their arrangement and distribution were examined by SEM. The results are discussed with regard to the role of the extracellular material in embryonic tissue interactions.
