This paper examines small sample properties of alternative bias‐corrected bootstrap prediction regions for the vector autoregressive (VAR) model. Bias‐corrected bootstrap prediction regions are constructed by combining bias‐correction of VAR parameter estimators with the bootstrap procedure. The backward VAR model is used to bootstrap VAR forecasts conditionally on past observations. Bootstrap prediction regions based on asymptotic bias‐correction are compared with those based on bootstrap bias‐correction. Monte Carlo simulation results indicate that bootstrap prediction regions based on asymptotic bias‐correction show better small sample properties than those based on bootstrap bias‐correction for nearly all cases considered. The former provide accurate coverage properties in most cases, while the latter over‐estimate the future uncertainty. Overall, the percentile‐t bootstrap prediction region based on asymptotic bias‐correction is found to provide highly desirable small sample properties, outperforming its alternatives in nearly all cases. Forecast intervals typically depend upon an assumption of normal forecast errors due to lack of information concerning the distribution of the forecast. This article applies the bootstrap to the problem of estimating forecast intervals for an AR(p) model. Box-Jenkins intervals are compared to intervals produced from a naive bootstrap and a bias-correction bootstrap. Substantial differences between the three methods are found. Bootstrapping an AR(p) model requires use of the backward residuals which typically are not i.i.d. and hence inappropriate for bootstrap resampling. A recently developed method of obtaining i.i.d. backward residuals is employed and was found to affect the bootstrap prediction intervals.  相似文献

This paper proposes the use of the bias‐corrected bootstrap for interval forecasting of an autoregressive time series with an arbitrary number of deterministic components. We use the bias‐corrected bootstrap based on two alternative bias‐correction methods: the bootstrap and an analytic formula based on asymptotic expansion. We also propose a new stationarity‐correction method, based on stable spectral factorization, as an alternative to Kilian's method exclusively used in past studies. A Monte Carlo experiment is conducted to compare small‐sample properties of prediction intervals. The results show that the bias‐corrected bootstrap prediction intervals proposed in this paper exhibit desirable small‐sample properties. It is also found that the bootstrap bias‐corrected prediction intervals based on stable spectral factorization are tighter and more stable than those based on Kilian's stationarity‐correction. The proposed methods are applied to interval forecasting for the number of tourist arrivals in Hong Kong. Copyright © 2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Derivation of prediction intervals in the k-variable regression model is problematic when future-period values of exogenous variables are not known with certainty. Even in the most favourable case when the forecasts of the exogenous variables are jointly normal, the distribution of the forecast error is non-normal, and thus traditional asymptotic normal theory does not apply. This paper presents an alternative bootstrap method. In contrast to the traditional predictor of the future value of the endogenous variable, which is known to be inconsistent, the bootstrap predictor converges weakly to the true value. Monte Carlo results show that the bootstrap prediction intervals can achieve approximately nominal coverage.  相似文献

We introduce a versatile and robust model that may help policymakers, bond portfolio managers and financial institutions to gain insight into the future shape of the yield curve. The Burg model forecasts a 20‐day yield curve, which fits a pth‐order autoregressive (AR) model to the input signal by minimizing (least squares) the forward and backward prediction errors while constraining the autoregressive parameters to satisfy the Levinson–Durbin recursion. Then, it uses an infinite impulse response prediction error filter. Results are striking when the Burg model is compared to the Diebold and Li model: the model not only significantly improves accuracy, but also its forecast yield curves stick to the shape of observed yield curves, whether normal, humped, flat or inverted. Upon the evidence that infinite‐order vector autoregression setting is more realistic in time series models, we propose new model selection procedures for producing efficient multistep forecasts. They consist of order selection criteria involving the sample analog of the asymptotic approximation of the h‐step‐ahead forecast mean squared error matrix, where h is the forecast horizon. These criteria are minimized over a truncation order nT under the assumption that an infinite‐order vector autoregression can be approximated, under suitable conditions, with a sequence of truncated models, where nT is increasing with sample size. Using finite‐order vector autoregressive models with various persistent levels and realistic sample sizes, Monte Carlo simulations show that, overall, our criteria outperform conventional competitors. Specifically, they tend to yield better small‐sample distribution of the lag‐order estimates around the true value, while estimating it with relatively satisfactory probabilities. They also produce more efficient multistep (and even stepwise) forecasts since they yield the lowest h‐step‐ahead forecast mean squared errors for the individual components of the holding pseudo‐data to forecast. Thus estimating the actual autoregressive order as well as the best forecasting model can be achieved with the same selection procedure. Such results stand in sharp contrast to the belief that parsimony is a virtue in itself, and state that the relative accuracy of strongly consistent criteria such as the Schwarz information criterion, as claimed in the literature, is overstated. Our criteria are new tools extending those previously existing in the literature and hence can suitably be used for various practical situations when necessary. Because of their natural adherence to the climate and pronounced seasonal cycles, prices of field crops constitute an interesting field for exploring seasonal time series models. We consider quarterly prices of two major cereals: barley and wheat. Using traditional in‐sample fit and moving‐window techniques, we investigate whether seasonality is deterministic or unit‐root stochastic and whether seasonal cycles have converged over time. We find that seasonal cycles in the data are mainly deterministic and that evidence on common cycles across countries differs for the two commodities. Out‐of‐sample prediction experiments, however, yield a ranking with respect to accuracy that does not match the statistical in‐sample evidence. Parametric bootstrap experiments establish that the observed mismatch is indeed an inherent and systematic feature. Copyright © 2008 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

In this paper, we investigate the time series properties of S&P 100 volatility and the forecasting performance of different volatility models. We consider several nonparametric and parametric volatility measures, such as implied, realized and model‐based volatility, and show that these volatility processes exhibit an extremely slow mean‐reverting behavior and possible long memory. For this reason, we explicitly model the near‐unit root behavior of volatility and construct median unbiased forecasts by approximating the finite‐sample forecast distribution using bootstrap methods. Furthermore, we produce prediction intervals for the next‐period implied volatility that provide important information about the uncertainty surrounding the point forecasts. Finally, we apply intercept corrections to forecasts from misspecified models which dramatically improve the accuracy of the volatility forecasts. Copyright © 2006 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

We consider the linear time‐series model yt=dt+ut(t=1,...,n), where dt is the deterministic trend and ut the stochastic term which follows an AR(1) process; ut=θut−1t, with normal innovations ϵt. Various assumptions about the start‐up will be made. Our main interest lies in the behaviour of the l‐period‐ahead forecast yn+1 near θ=1. Unlike in other studies of the AR(1) unit root process, we do not wish to ask the question whether θ=1 but are concerned with the behaviour of the forecast estimate near and at θ=1. For this purpose we define the sth (s=1,2) order sensitivity measure λl(s) of the forecast yn+1 near θ=1. This measures the sensitivity of the forecast at the unit root. In this study we consider two deterministic trends: dtt and dtttt. The forecast will be the Best Linear Unbiased forecast. We show that, when dtt, the number of observations has no effect on forecast sensitivity. When the deterministic trend is linear, the sensitivity is zero. We also develop a large‐sample procedure to measure the forecast sensitivity when we are uncertain whether to include the linear trend. Our analysis suggests that, depending on the initial conditions, it is better to include a linear trend for reduced sensitivity of the medium‐term forecast. A sample‐based method in Kolsrud (Journal of Forecasting 2007; 26 (3): 171–188) for the construction of a time‐simultaneous prediction band for a univariate time series is extended to produce a variable‐ and time‐simultaneous prediction box for a multivariate time series. A measure of distance based on the L ‐norm is applied to a learning sample of multivariate time trajectories, which can be mean‐ and/or variance‐nonstationary. Based on the ranking of distances to the centre of the sample, a subsample of the most central multivariate trajectories is selected. A prediction box is constructed by circumscribing the subsample with a hyperrectangle. The fraction of central trajectories selected into the subsample can be calibrated by bootstrap such that the expected coverage of the box equals a prescribed nominal level. The method is related to the concept of data depth, and thence modified to increase coverage. Applications to simulated and empirical data illustrate the method, which is also compared to several other methods in the literature adapted to the multivariate setting. The problem of forecasting from vector autoregressive models has attracted considerable attention in the literature. The most popular non‐Bayesian approaches use either asymptotic approximations or bootstrapping to evaluate the uncertainty associated with the forecast. The practice in the empirical literature has been to assess the uncertainty of multi‐step forecasts by connecting the intervals constructed for individual forecast periods. This paper proposes a bootstrap method of constructing prediction bands for forecast paths. The bands are constructed from forecast paths obtained in bootstrap replications using an optimization procedure to find the envelope of the most concentrated paths. From extensive Monte Carlo study, it is found that the proposed method provides more accurate assessment of predictive uncertainty from the vector autoregressive model than its competitors. We consider one parametric and five semiparametric approaches to estimate D in SARFIMA (0, D, 0)s processes, that is, when the process is a fractionally integrated ARMA model with seasonality s. We also consider h‐step‐ahead forecasting for these processes. We present the proof of some features of this model and also a study based on a Monte Carlo simulation for different sample sizes and different seasonal periods. We compare the different estimation procedures analyzing the bias, the mean squared error values, and the confidence intervals for the estimators. We also consider three different methods to choose the total number of regressors in the regression analysis for the semiparametric class of estimation procedures. We apply the methodology to the Nile River flow monthly data, and also to a simulated seasonal fractionally integrated time series. Copyright © 2007 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

This paper investigates the effects of imposing invalid cointegration restrictions or ignoring valid ones on the estimation, testing and forecasting properties of the bivariate, first‐order, vector autoregressive (VAR(1)) model. We first consider nearly cointegrated VARs, that is, stable systems whose largest root, lmax, lies in the neighborhood of unity, while the other root, lmin, is safely smaller than unity. In this context, we define the ‘forecast cost of type I’ to be the deterioration in the forecasting accuracy of the VAR model due to the imposition of invalid cointegration restrictions. However, there are cases where misspecification arises for the opposite reasons, namely from ignoring cointegration when the true process is, in fact, cointegrated. Such cases can arise when lmax equals unity and lmin is less than but near to unity. The effects of this type of misspecification on forecasting will be referred to as ‘forecast cost of type II’. By means of Monte Carlo simulations, we measure both types of forecast cost in actual situations, where the researcher is led (or misled) by the usual unit root tests in choosing the unit root structure of the system. We consider VAR(1) processes driven by i.i.d. Gaussian or GARCH innovations. To distinguish between the effects of nonlinear dependence and those of leptokurtosis, we also consider processes driven by i.i.d. t(2) innovations. The simulation results reveal that the forecast cost of imposing invalid cointegration restrictions is substantial, especially for small samples. On the other hand, the forecast cost of ignoring valid cointegration restrictions is small but not negligible. In all the cases considered, both types of forecast cost increase with the intensity of GARCH effects. Copyright © 2009 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Bootstrap in time series models is not straightforward to implement, as in this case the observations are not independent. One of the alternatives is to bootstrap the residuals in order to obtain the bootstrap series and thus use these series for inference purposes. This work deals with the problem of assessing the accuracy of hyperparameters in structural models. We study the simplest case, the local level model, where the hyperparameters are given by the variances of the disturbance terms. As their distribution is not known, we employ the bootstrap to approximate the true distribution, using parametric and non‐parametric approaches. Bootstrap standard deviations are computed and their performances compared to the asymptotic and empirical standard errors, calculated using a Monte Carlo simulation. We also build confidence intervals to the hyperparameters, using four bootstrap methods and the results are compared by means of the length, shape and coverage probabilities of the intervals. We investigate the seasonal unit root properties of monthly industrial production series for 16 OECD countries within the context of a structural time series model. A basic version of this model assumes that there are 11 such seasonal unit roots. We propose to use model selection criteria (AIC and BIC) to examine if one or more of these are in fact stationary. We generally find that when these criteria indicate that a smaller number of seasonal unit roots can be assumed and hence that some seasonal roots are stationary, the corresponding model also gives more accurate one‐step‐ahead forecasts. We show that the effects of overfitting and underfitting a vector autoregressive (VAR) model are strongly asymmetric for VAR summary statistics involving higher‐order dynamics (such as impulse response functions, variance decompositions, or long‐run forecasts) . Underfit models often underestimate the true dynamics of the population process and may result in spuriously tight confidence intervals. These insights are important for applied work, regardless of how the lag order is determined. In addition, they provide a new perspective on the trade‐offs between alternative lag order selection criteria. We provide evidence that, contrary to conventional wisdom, for many statistics of interest to VAR users the point and interval estimates based on the AIC compare favourably to those based on the more parsimonious Schwarz Information Criterion and Hannan – Quinn Criterion. In this study we evaluate the forecast performance of model‐averaged forecasts based on the predictive likelihood carrying out a prior sensitivity analysis regarding Zellner's g prior. The main results are fourfold. First, the predictive likelihood does always better than the traditionally employed ‘marginal’ likelihood in settings where the true model is not part of the model space. Secondly, forecast accuracy as measured by the root mean square error (RMSE) is maximized for the median probability model. On the other hand, model averaging excels in predicting direction of changes. Lastly, g should be set according to Laud and Ibrahim (1995: Predictive model selection. Journal of the Royal Statistical Society B 57 : 247–262) with a hold‐out sample size of 25% to minimize the RMSE (median model) and 75% to optimize direction of change forecasts (model averaging). We finally apply the aforementioned recommendations to forecast the monthly industrial production output of six countries, beating for almost all countries the AR(1) benchmark model. The paper develops an oil price forecasting technique which is based on the present value model of rational commodity pricing. The approach suggests shifting the forecasting problem to the marginal convenience yield, which can be derived from the cost‐of‐carry relationship. In a recursive out‐of‐sample analysis, forecast accuracy at horizons within one year is checked by the root mean squared error as well as the mean error and the frequency of a correct direction‐of‐change prediction. For all criteria employed, the proposed forecasting tool outperforms the approach of using futures prices as direct predictors of future spot prices. Vis‐à‐vis the random‐walk model, it does not significantly improve forecast accuracy but provides valuable statements on the direction of change. Copyright © 2007 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The problem of prediction in time series using nonparametric functional techniques is considered. An extension of the local linear method to regression with functional explanatory variable is proposed. This forecasting method is compared with the functional Nadaraya–Watson method and with finite‐dimensional nonparametric predictors for several real‐time series. Prediction intervals based on the bootstrap and conditional distribution estimation for those nonparametric methods are also compared. Copyright © 2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

This study compares the volatility and density prediction performance of alternative GARCH models with different conditional distribution specifications. The conditional residuals are specified as normal, skewedHyphen;t or compound Poisson (jump) distribution based upon a nonlinear and asymmetric GARCH (NGARCH) model framework. The empirical results for the S&P 500 and FTSE 100 index returns suggest that the jump model outperforms all other models in terms of both volatility forecasting and density prediction. Nevertheless, the superiority of the nonHyphen;normal models is not always significant and diminished during the sample period on those occasions when volatility experiences an obvious structural change.
