The sensitivity to plasmin digestion of human IgG proteins of different heavy chain subclasses.

Normal IgG and purified IgG proteins of all 4 subclasses were digested with plasmin. As expected, IgG3 proteins were highly susceptible to degradation. Usually, activation with streptokinase resulted in faster and more accentuated degradation, but normal IgG was more intensely degraded by nonactivated plasmin. The presence of plasmin activators in IgG preparation might account for this observation.     

Correlation between electrophoretic mobility and heavy chain sub-classes of residual IgG from patients with severe hypogammaglobulinaemia

Summary The correlation between the electrophoretic mobility of residual IgG in hypogammaglobulinaemic sera and the distribution of IgG sub-classes was studied. It was found that IgG from sera with raised levels of IgG2 show fast electrophoretic mobility, and sera with very low or absent IgG2 show a slow moving IgG. IgG3 was absent or just detectable in fast moving IgGs, and present in higher titers in some slow IgGs.

Résumé La correlation entre la mobilité electrophorétique de l'IgG résiduelle des sérums hypogammaglobulinémiques et la distribution des sous-classes de l'IgG est l'objet de cet étude. Les IgG résiduelles de mobilité rapide ont des titres élevés d'IgG2 et celles de mobilité lente ne présentent que des traces d'IgG2.

The assessment of the rate of digestion of serum proteins in mosquito by gel-diffusion and immunoelectrophoresis

Zusammenfassung Die Verdauungsgeschwindigkeit von Serumproteinen im Darm von Mücken (Armigeres subalbatus) wurde mit Gel-Diffusion und Immunoelektrophorese bestimmt. Es konnten wenigstens 2 Bänder mit Gel-Diffusion in einer Mücke nachgewiesen werden, die menschliches Blut gesaugt hatte. Während das äussere Band nach 12–18 h verschwindet, konnte das innere noch nach 48–56 h als Albuminfraktion des menschlichen Serums bestimmt werden.     

Expression of alpha-cardiac myosin heavy chain in mammalian skeletal muscle

We have investigated the reactivity of different human, rat and cat muscles to a monoclonal antibody directed against human -cardiac myosin heavy chain. We have found that special fiber subpopulations of human massetr and extraocular muscles, as well as the bag fibers of human, rat and cat muscle spindles, were reactive to this antibody, indicating that these fibers expressed -cardiac myosin heavy chain or a closely related isoform. This isomyosin was present in the spindle bag fibers at early fetal stages, whereas its expression in masseter and extraocular muscle fibers was not detected during the first 22 weeks of gestation. Our results add to the list of muscle proteins which are expressed in locations or at developmental stages other than those initially described, suggesting that a revision of the present nomenclature of the subgroups of myosin heavy chains might be considered in the future.     

Initial orientation of homing pigeons: different sensitivity to altered magnetic fields in birds of different countries

Summary In experiments performed in Italy, altered magnetic fields were effective in biasing the initial orientation of Italian pigeons but not that of German pigeons raised in Italy, suggesting a genetic difference between the two bird stocks.We are grateful to Dr H. G. Wallraff who kindly supplied the German pigeons used in our experiments and gave useful suggestions.     

The interaction of protamine with human blood plasma proteins

Zusammenfassung Es wurden Interaktionen von Protamin mit vorher in Agar-Gel elektrophoretisch getrennten plasmatischen Eiweisskörpern untersucht. Neben der schon früher bekannten Interaktion mit Fibrinogen wurden auch solche mit beiden Klassen der plasmatischen Lipoproteine gefunden.

Binding of centchroman--a nonsteroidal antifertility agent to human plasma proteins

Centchroman, a non-steroidal antifertility agent showed a low affinity (Kd = 13.19 X 10(-6) M) and nonsaturable binding to human plasma. Centchroman did not compete either with sex hormone binding globulin or corticosteroid binding globulin. Polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and temperature dependent binding characteristics revealed that the protein responsible for centchroman binding to human plasma resembles albumin.     

Placental transfer of a human IgG2 monoclonal protein

Résumé Étude du passage transplacentaire à son enfant des sousclasses de l'IgG chez une femme atteinte d'une forme benigne de gammapathie monoclonale. Le transfer de la paraprotéine IgG2 L a été établi avec certitude. Il est très probable que les autres sous-classes sont également transferées. Comparée aux résultats publiés sur catabolisme de l'IgG chez l'adulte, la durée de vie de l'IgG total et de l'IgG2 est très longue chez l'enfant.     

Binding of tryptophan to different serum proteins in humans and in rats

Riassunto Sieri di uomo e di ratto sono stati incubati con C¹⁴-l-triptofano e sottoposti a elettroforesi su gel di poliacrilamide. Nel siero umano la radioattività si è localizzata nelle frazioni albuminica, prealbuminica e macroglobulinica. Nel siero di ratto il C¹⁴-l-triptofano si è localizzato nella zona delle albumine, -globuline e macroglobuline.     

Magnesium enhances human pancreatic elastase digestion of 125I-labeled elastin

The effect of some divalent cations, especially Mg++, on elastinolysis by porcine or human pancreatic elastase has been determined using 125Iodine-labeled elastin as substrate. Elastin degradation was significantly increased in the presence of 10(-3) M Mg++. If elastin was pre-incubated with 0.5 (w/v) Triton, there was a further increase in elastinolysis to 2.6 times the original rate.

Non-paramagnetism of human serum proteins

Zusammenfassung Normale Serumproteine wurden mittels Elektromagnetophorese in Zellulose-Azetatgel ausgeführt, wobei keine Trennung der einzelnen Proteine erfolgte. Es stellte sich heraus, dass Serumproteine keine paramagnetischen Eigenschaften aufweisen.
