This paper studies the dynamic relationships between US gasoline prices, crude oil prices, and the stock of gasoline. Using monthly data between January 1973 and December 1987, we find that the US gasoline price is mainly influenced by the price of crude oil. The stock of gasoline has little or no influence on the price of gasoline during the period before the second energy crisis, and seems to have some influence during the period after. We also find that the dynamic relationship between the prices of gasoline and crude oil changes over time, shifting from a longer lag response to a shorter lag response. Box-Jenkins ARIMA and transfer function models are employed in this study. These models are estimated using estimation procedure with and without outlier adjustment. For model estimation with outlier adjustment, an iterative procedure for the joint estimation of model parameters and outlier effects is employed. The forecasting performance of these models is carefully examined. For the purpose of illustration, we also analyze these time series using classical white-noise regression models. The results show the importance of using appropriate time-series methods in modeling and forecasting when the data are serially correlated. This paper also demonstrates the problems of time-series modeling when outliers are present.  相似文献

Modeling online auction prices is a popular research topic among statisticians and marketing analysts. Recent research mainly focuses on two directions: one is the functional data analysis (FDA) approach, in which the price–time relationship is modeled by a smooth curve, and the other is the point process approach, which directly models the arrival process of bidders and bids. In this paper, a novel model for the bid arrival process using a self‐exciting point process (SEPP) is proposed and applied to forecast auction prices. The FDA and point process approaches are linked together by using functional data analysis technique to describe the intensity of the bid arrival point process. Using the SEPP to model the bid arrival process, many stylized facts in online auction data can be captured. We also develop a simulation‐based forecasting procedure using the estimated SEPP intensity and historical bidding increment. In particular, prediction interval for the terminal price of merchandise can be constructed. Applications to eBay auction data of Harry Potter books and Microsoft Xbox show that the SEPP model provides more accurate and more informative forecasting results than traditional methods. While in speculative markets forward prices could be regarded as natural predictors for future spot rates, empirically, forward prices often fail to indicate ex ante the direction of price movements. In terms of forecasting, the random walk approximation of speculative prices has been established to provide ‘naive’ predictors that are most difficult to outperform by both purely backward‐looking time series models and more structural approaches processing information from forward markets. We empirically assess the implicit predictive content of forward prices by means of wavelet‐based prediction of two foreign exchange (FX) rates and the price of Brent oil quoted either in US dollars or euros. Essentially, wavelet‐based predictors are smoothed auxiliary (padded) time series quotes that are added to the sample information beyond the forecast origin. We compare wavelet predictors obtained from padding with constant prices (i.e. random walk predictors) and forward prices. For the case of FX markets, padding with forward prices is more effective than padding with constant prices, and, moreover, respective wavelet‐based predictors outperform purely backward‐looking time series approaches (ARIMA). For the case of Brent oil quoted in US dollars, wavelet‐based predictors do not signal predictive content of forward prices for future spot prices. Copyright © 2016 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

People may often forecast using cognitive procedures that resemble formal time-series extrapolation models. A model of judgmental extrapolation based on exponential smoothing is proposed in which the setting of the trend parameter is hypothesized to depend upon the relative salience of the successive changes. The salience hypothesis was first tested with exponential series by the use of a framing manipulation. As predicted, focusing the subjects' attention on the changes led to more accurate forecasts. In two investment simulation studies, the salience hypothesis was further examined by varying the statistical properties of the price changes. As predicted, subjects were more likely to sell as prices fell and to buy as prices rose (1) as the sample size of similar changes increased; (2) when the variance of the changes was low; and (3) when the absolute value of the mean change was high. Conditions that may influence judgmental forecasting processes are discussed.  相似文献

For forecasting nonstationary and nonlinear energy prices time series, a novel adaptive multiscale ensemble learning paradigm incorporating ensemble empirical mode decomposition (EEMD), particle swarm optimization (PSO) and least square support vector machines (LSSVM) with kernel function prototype is developed. Firstly, the extrema symmetry expansion EEMD, which can effectively restrain the mode mixing and end effects, is used to decompose the energy price into simple modes. Secondly, by using the fine‐to‐coarse reconstruction algorithm, the high‐frequency, low‐frequency and trend components are identified. Furthermore, autoregressive integrated moving average is applicable to predicting the high‐frequency components. LSSVM is suitable for forecasting the low‐frequency and trend components. At the same time, a universal kernel function prototype is introduced for making up the drawbacks of single kernel function, which can adaptively select the optimal kernel function type and model parameters according to the specific data using the PSO algorithm. Finally, the prediction results of all the components are aggregated into the forecasting values of energy price time series. The empirical results show that, compared with the popular prediction methods, the proposed method can significantly improve the prediction accuracy of energy prices, with high accuracy both in the level and directional predictions. This study establishes a benchmark for short‐term salmon price forecasting. The weekly spot price of Norwegian farmed Atlantic salmon is predicted 1–5 weeks ahead using data from 2007 to 2014. Sixteen alternative forecasting methods are considered, ranging from classical time series models to customized machine learning techniques to salmon futures prices. The best predictions are delivered by k‐nearest neighbors method for 1 week ahead; vector error correction model estimated using elastic net regularization for 2 and 3 weeks ahead; and futures prices for 4 and 5 weeks ahead. While the nominal gains in forecast accuracy over a naïve benchmark are small, the economic value of the forecasts is considerable. Using a simple trading strategy for timing the sales based on price forecasts could increase the net profit of a salmon farmer by around 7%.  相似文献

We propose a method for improving the predictive ability of standard forecasting models used in financial economics. Our approach is based on the functional partial least squares (FPLS) model, which is capable of avoiding multicollinearity in regression by efficiently extracting information from the high‐dimensional market data. By using its well‐known ability, we can incorporate auxiliary variables that improve the predictive accuracy. We provide an empirical application of our proposed methodology in terms of its ability to predict the conditional average log return and the volatility of crude oil prices via exponential smoothing, Bayesian stochastic volatility, and GARCH (generalized autoregressive conditional heteroskedasticity) models, respectively. In particular, what we call functional data analysis (FDA) traces in this article are obtained via the FPLS regression from both the crude oil returns and auxiliary variables of the exchange rates of major currencies. For forecast performance evaluation, we compare out‐of‐sample forecasting accuracy of the standard models with FDA traces to the accuracy of the same forecasting models with the observed crude oil returns, principal component regression (PCR), and least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) models. We find evidence that the standard models with FDA traces significantly outperform our competing models. Finally, they are also compared with the test for superior predictive ability and the reality check for data snooping. Our empirical results show that our new methodology significantly improves predictive ability of standard models in forecasting the latent average log return and the volatility of financial time series.  相似文献

For improving forecasting accuracy and trading performance, this paper proposes a new multi-objective least squares support vector machine with mixture kernels to forecast asset prices. First, a mixture kernel function is introduced into taking full use of global and local kernel functions, which is adaptively determined following a data-driven procedure. Second, a multi-objective fitness function is proposed by incorporating level forecasting and trading performance, and particle swarm optimization is used to synchronously search the optimal model selections of least squares support vector machine with mixture kernels. Taking CO2 assets as examples, the results obtained show that compared with the popular models, the proposed model can achieve higher forecasting accuracy and higher trading performance. The advantages of the mixture kernel function and the multi-objective fitness function can improve the forecasting ability of the asset price. The findings also show that the models with a high-level forecasting accuracy cannot always have a high trading performance of asset price forecasting. In contrast, high directional forecasting usually means a high trading performance.  相似文献

This paper evaluates different procedures for selecting the order of a non-seasonal ARMA model. Specifically, it compares the forecasting accuracy of models developed by the personalized Box-Jenkins (BJ) methodology with models chosen by numerous automatic procedures. The study uses real series modelled by experts (textbook authors) in the BJ approach. Our results show that many objective selection criteria provide structures equal or superior to the time-consuming BJ method. For the sets of data used in this study, we also examine the influence of parsimony in time-series forecasting. Defining what models are too large or too small is sensitive to the forecast horizon. Automatic techniques that select the best models for forecasting are similar in size to BJ models although they often disagree on model order.  相似文献

This paper offers some perspectives on forecasting research in accounting and finance. It is maintained that many common areas of forecasting research exist. Yet, most research has focused upon a particular (Box-Jenkins) technique and a particular (reported earnings) variable, virtually neglecting numerous other relevant forecasting research topics. This symposium issue includes papers which address several of these neglected research topics. The eight papers constituting the issue are classified into three categories: (1) univariate time-series modelling; (2) multivariate time-series modelling; and (3) comparison of experts' forecasts with those of statistical models. Following a summary of the papers, some suggestions for future research are offered.  相似文献

The increase in oil price volatility in recent years has raised the importance of forecasting it accurately for valuing and hedging investments. The paper models and forecasts the crude oil exchange‐traded funds (ETF) volatility index, which has been used in the last years as an important alternative measure to track and analyze the volatility of future oil prices. Analysis of the oil volatility index suggests that it presents features similar to those of the daily market volatility index, such as long memory, which is modeled using well‐known heterogeneous autoregressive (HAR) specifications and new extensions that are based on net and scaled measures of oil price changes. The aim is to improve the forecasting performance of the traditional HAR models by including predictors that capture the impact of oil price changes on the economy. The performance of the new proposals and benchmarks is evaluated with the model confidence set (MCS) and the Generalized‐AutoContouR (G‐ACR) tests in terms of point forecasts and density forecasting, respectively. We find that including the leverage in the conditional mean or variance of the basic HAR model increases its predictive ability. Furthermore, when considering density forecasting, the best models are a conditional heteroskedastic HAR model that includes a scaled measure of oil price changes, and a HAR model with errors following an exponential generalized autoregressive conditional heteroskedasticity specification. In both cases, we consider a flexible distribution for the errors of the conditional heteroskedastic process.  相似文献

Compared with point forecasting, interval forecasting is believed to be more effective and helpful in decision making, as it provides more information about the data generation process. Based on the well-established “linear and nonlinear” modeling framework, a hybrid model is proposed by coupling the vector error correction model (VECM) with artificial intelligence models which consider the cointegration relationship between the lower and upper bounds (Coin-AIs). VECM is first employed to fit the original time series with the residual error series modeled by Coin-AIs. Using pork price as a research sample, the empirical results statistically confirm the superiority of the proposed VECM-CoinAIs over other competing models, which include six single models and six hybrid models. This result suggests that considering the cointegration relationship is a workable direction for improving the forecast performance of the interval-valued time series. Moreover, with a reasonable data transformation process, interval forecasting is proven to be more accurate than point forecasting.  相似文献

This study attempts to apply the general equilibrium model of stock index futures with both stochastic market volatility and stochastic interest rates to the TAIFEX and the SGX Taiwan stock index futures data, and compares the predictive power of the cost of carry and the general equilibrium models. This study also represents the first attempt to investigate which of the five volatility estimators can enhance the forecasting performance of the general equilibrium model. Additionally, the impact of the up‐tick rule and other various explanatory factors on mispricing is also tested using a regression framework. Overall, the general equilibrium model outperforms the cost of carry model in forecasting prices of the TAIFEX and the SGX futures. This finding indicates that in the higher volatility of the Taiwan stock market incorporating stochastic market volatility into the pricing model helps in predicting the prices of these two futures. Furthermore, the comparison results of different volatility estimators support the conclusion that the power EWMA and the GARCH(1,1) estimators can enhance the forecasting performance of the general equilibrium model compared to the other estimators. Additionally, the relaxation of the up‐tick rule helps reduce the degree of mispricing. Copyright © 2008 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

This paper uses recent advances in time-series modeling to derive long-horizon forecasts of commodity price volatility which incorporate investors' expectations of volatility. Our results are promising. We compare several different forecasts of commodity price volatility, which we divide into three categories: (1) forecasts using only expectations derived from options prices; (2) forecasts using only time-series modeling; and (3) forecasts which combine market expectations and time-series methods. The forecasts in (1) and (2) are used extensively in the literature, while those in (3) are new in this paper. On comparing these different forecasts, we find that our proposed forecasts from category (3) outperform both market expectations forecasts and time-series forecasts. This result holds both in and out of sample for virtually all commodities considered.  相似文献

Forecasting for nonlinear time series is an important topic in time series analysis. Existing numerical algorithms for multi‐step‐ahead forecasting ignore accuracy checking, alternative Monte Carlo methods are also computationally very demanding and their accuracy is difficult to control too. In this paper a numerical forecasting procedure for nonlinear autoregressive time series models is proposed. The forecasting procedure can be used to obtain approximate m‐step‐ahead predictive probability density functions, predictive distribution functions, predictive mean and variance, etc. for a range of nonlinear autoregressive time series models. Examples in the paper show that the forecasting procedure works very well both in terms of the accuracy of the results and in the ability to deal with different nonlinear autoregressive time series models. Category management—a relatively new function in marketing—involves large-scale, real-time forecasting of multiple data series in complex environments. In this paper, we illustrate how Bayesian Vector Auto regression (BVAR) fulfils the category manager's decision-support requirements by providing accurate forecasts of a category's state variables (prices, volumes and advertising levels), incorporating management interventions (merchandising events such as end-aisle displays), and revealing competitive dynamics through impulse response analyses. Using 124 weeks of point-of-sale scanner data comprising 31 variables for four brands, we compare the out-of-sample forecasts from BVAR to forecasts from exponential smoothing, univariate and multivariate Box-Jenkins transfer function analyses, and multivariate ARMA models. Theil U's indicate that BVAR forecasts are superior to those from alternate approaches. In large-scale forecasting applications, BVAR's ease of identification and parsimonious use of degrees of freedom are particularly valuable.  相似文献

This paper examines the relative forecasting performance of multivariate time-series analysis. One hundred consecutive monthly observations for three accounting series were obtained from a manufacturing division of a large corporation. Regression, univariate time-series, transfer-function, and multiple time-series models were identified, estimated, and used to forecast each accounting series. The multiple time-series model yielded the smallest forecast variances.  相似文献

The forecasting of prices for electricity balancing reserve power can essentially improve the trading positions of market participants in competitive auctions. Having identified a lack of literature related to forecasting balancing reserve prices, we deploy approaches originating from econometrics and artificial intelligence and set up a forecasting framework based on autoregressive and exogenous factors. We use SARIMAX models as well as neural networks with different structures and forecast based on a rolling one-step forecast with reestimation of the models. It turns out that the naive forecast performs reasonably well but is outperformed by the more advanced models. In addition, neural network approaches outperform the econometric approach in terms of forecast quality, whereas for the further use of the generated models the econometric approach has advantages in terms of explaining price drivers. For the present application, more advanced configurations of the neural networks are not able to further improve the forecasting performance.  相似文献

This paper performs a large‐scale forecast evaluation exercise to assess the performance of different models for the short‐term forecasting of GDP, resorting to large datasets from ten European countries. Several versions of factor models are considered and cross‐country evidence is provided. The forecasting exercise is performed in a simulated real‐time context, which takes account of publication lags in the individual series. In general, we find that factor models perform best and models that exploit monthly information outperform models that use purely quarterly data. However, the improvement over the simpler, quarterly models remains contained. Copyright © 2009 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

We look at the problem of forecasting time series which are not normally distributed. An overall approach is suggested which works both on simulated data and on real data sets. The idea is intuitively attractive and has the considerable advantage that it can readily be understood by non-specialists. Our approach is based on ARMA methodology and our models are estimated via a likelihood procedure which takes into account the non-normality of the data. We examine in some detail the circumstances in which taking explicit account of the nonnormality improves the forecasting process in a significant way. Results from several simulated and real series are included.  相似文献
