Orally administered melatonin stimulates the 3α/β-hydroxysteroid oxidoreductase but not the 5α-reductase in the ventral prostate and seminal vesicles of pinealectomized rats

Summary Pinealectomized rats were treated orally with melatonin (MEL) for 14 days. Prostates and seminal vesicles were investigated for the activity of the 4-3-ketosteroid-5-oxidoreductase (5-R) and of the 3/-hydroxysteroid-oxidoreductase (3-HSO). The activity of the 3a-HSO was significantly stimulated (p<0.01, Friedman test) when compared to controls. Conclusion Changes of the vessel capacity resulted from the pressor synocarotid reflexes, intestinal chemoreflexes and reflexes from the right atrium or ventricle and electric stimulation of the somatic nerve afferents can be either similarly or differently directed as compared with the responses of the resistance vessels.

Giant pigment granules in dermal melanocytes of rat scrotal skin

Summary Giant melanosomes, ellipsoidal (1.5 m×1.3 m) or spherica (1.1 m–1.4 m in diameter) exist in the scrotal skin of the black pelted Long Evans rat. The effect of thermal injury on plasma carnitine in rats

Summary The plasma concentration of L-carnitine in scalded rats was determined to be greater (p0.05) than that of control rats at 6 h following the administration of a 20% body surface, full-thickness burn produced by scalding in a 100°C water bath for 15 sec.     

Changes in the lumen of coronary vessels under oligemic hypotension

Conclusions The decrease of circulating blood volume, resulting in oligemic hypotension, may evoke in anaesthetized cat the active constrictory coronary vessel responses of 2 types, one occuring immediately after start of the hypotension and the other having a significantly prolonged latency.

Riassunto È stata studiata con metodi istochimici la distribuzione della ⁵-3-idrossisteroide deidrogenasi ( ⁵-3-HSDH) e delle 17-idrossisteroide deidrogenasi (17-HSDH), DPN- e TPN-dipendenti, nell'ovario di gallina ovulante. Mentre la ⁵-3-HSDH è presente in tutti i tessuti a secrezione steroide dell'ovario, la 17-HSDH è localizzata solo nelle cellule della granulosa.

Der Mechanismus und die Stereochemie dieser Umwandlung (Retro-Aldolkondensation und Benzilsäureumlagerung) wird diskutiert.

Zusammenfassung (1) Es wurde bei den SeeigelartenParacentrotus ,Arbacia undSphaerechinus sowie den drei BastardenPar ×Arb ,Arb ×Par undPar ×Sphaer für eine Reihe von Entwicklungsstadien die Anzahl der Kerne pro Keim bestimmt (Tabelle). Der morphogenetischen Hemmung der Bastarde entsprechen herabgesetzte Kernzahlen und parallel eine Herabsetzung der DNS-Synthese. (2) Es wurde bei den genannten reinen Arten und den Bastarden derUmsatz der RNS bestimmt. Er geht in allen Fällen, bei den reinen Arten wie bei den Bastarden, der DNS- Synthese parallel.

Structure of the porcine thyrotropin receptor: a 200 kilodalton glycoprotein heterocomplex

Summary We have determined that the porcine thyroidal TSH receptor is a glycoprotein heterotetramer composed of two M_r 35,000 () covalently linked subunits which interact noncovalently with two copies of (M_r 66,000) chains.Acknowledgments. Defensive steroids from a carrion beetle (Silpha americana)

Summary The defensive anal effluent discharged bySilpha americana in response to disturbance contains a mixture of steroids stemming from a glandular annex of the rectum. The compounds have been characterized as 15-hydroxyprogesterone (1, principal component), 5-pregnan-15-ol-3, 20-dione (2), 5-pregnan-3, 15-diol-20-one (3), 5-pregnan-7, 15-diol-3,20-dione (4), 5-pregnan-3, 7, 15-triol-20-one (5), 5-pregnan-16-ol-3,20-dione (6), and 5-pregnan-3, 16-diol-20-one (7), none previously found in insects. Bioassays with jumping spiders showed compounds1 and6 to be feeding deterrents at the 1 g level.Paper No. 78 of the series: Defense Mechanisms of Arthropods. Lack of effect of cortisone,thyroxine and insulin on the developmental pattern of mouse intestinal glucose-6-phosphatase activity
