Methyllycaconitine,a naturally occurring insecticide with a high affinity for the insect cholinergic receptor

Summary Studies of extracts ofDelphinium seeds, long known to be insecticidal, revealed that a principal insecticidal toxin was methyllycaconitine, which is shown to be a potent inhibitor of -bungarotoxin binding to housefly heads (K_inh=2.5×10^–10±0.5×10^–10M).Calgary for gifts of MLA, citrate and lycoctonine, and Dr W. Bowers of the University of Arizona for the original extract ofDelphinium seeds. We would also like to acknowledge the able technical support of Ms C. Dushin, Mr E.L. Bowman, Dr C. C. Gagne, Mr R. F. Dissociation-constants of metal-ion-complexes with alkaline phosphatase from pig kidney

Summary Using metal-ion buffers it was possible to remove Zn²⁺, Mg²⁺ and Mn²⁺ ions of pig kidney alkaline phosphatase reversibly. The dissociation constants obtained are K_EMg:4·10^–7 M, K_EMn:4·10^–8 M and K_EZn:8·10^–13 M (22°C, pH:9.6, :0.07).Acknowledgement: The authors thank Dr.H. U. Étude génétique de mutants Mal induits par la nitrosoguanidine chezEscherichia coli

Summary In the course of the present investigations, NG induced Mal mutants ofE. coli B were subjected to the following studies: 1. mutation rate for different genetical characters; 2. frequency of reversion to wild type; 3. classification of Mal UV^s mutants formalA ormalB; 4. genetical analysis of themalB UV^s mutants. It was found that approximately 40% of the Ma1 UV^s mutants mapped atmalA and 60% atmalB.

Effect of mercuric acetate on mobilization of N and P during germination and seedling growth ofCicer arietinum

In vitro inactivation of corpora allata of the bugOncopeltus fasciatus by precocene II

Summary Corpora allata fromOncopeltus fasciatus incubated in vitro in medium containing 10^–5.35 M (1 g/ml) of precocene II lose their ability to secrete juvenile hormone when reimplanted into last instar larvae.Acknowledgments. Experimental immunity against trypanosomiasis

Summary 9 groups of 6 female rats were used in an experiment using fraction 3 ofTrypanosoma rhodesiense. 500 g gave 100% immunoprotection and 1000 and 1500 g gave 66% immunoprotection when challenged with 5×10² T. brucei. 2 groups of 10 female rats were tested for a short period inoculation immune response. In this, 750 g of fraction 3 ofT. rhodesiense gave 70% immunoprotection when challenged withT. brucei.I thank the University of Zambia for support; Dr M. A. Q. Microbial degradation of bitumen

Summary A blown bitumen Mexphalte R 90/40 with a high content of saturated hydrocarbons was degraded by several microorganisms to the same extent. In batch cultures ofSaccharomycopsis lipolytica, maximal biodegradation was estimated to be about 9% w/w, 3.2·10^–3 g/cm² and 3.1·10^–3 cm of degraded bitumen. The Mexphalte R 90/40 degradation rate was closely coupled to biofilm formation. The microbial activity concerned predominantly the oxidation of saturated hydrocarbons. A direct distillation bitumen 80/100 with a low content of saturated hydrocarbons and a high content of aromatic hydrocarbons and resins was more resistant to biodegradation.     

Effect of NPV of the armywormMythimna (Pseudaletia) separata on the silkwormBombyx mori

Summary Nuclear polyhedrosis virus (NPV) material of the armywormMythimna (Pseudaletia) separata was administered in the form of PIBs and free virus rods to the larvae of silkwormBombyx mori. Routes used for administration were topical, intrahaemocoelic and oral. The larvae were treated with following concentrations: 10×10⁵ PIBs/L, 10×10⁶ PIBs/L, 10×10⁷ PIBs/L, 10×10⁸ PIBs/L. In all the 3 experiments, the larvae showed neither any signs and symptoms, nor mortality due to polyhedrosis. Thus it appears that the NPV ofM. (P.) separata is safe for the silkwormB. mori.Acknowledgments. Microbiological oxidation of the pentyl side chain of cannabinoids

Summary Syncephalastrum racemosum ATCC 18192 andMycobacterium rhodochrous ATCC 19067 partially degrade the n-pentyl side chain of cannabidiol, cannabinol, ⁸-tetrahydrocannabinol and ⁹-tetrahydrocannabinol. Antigenic similarity of humanα 1-antitrypsin to a corresponding protein in the serum of non-human primates

Zusammenfassung Mit der Methode der Präzipitationshemmung nachHerzenberg et al.⁶ wurde die Kreuzreaktion von Seren subhumaner Primaten mit einem Antiserum gegen menschliches ₁-Antitrypsin gemessen. Die Ergebnisse stimmen mit der geltenden Taxonomie gut überein. ₁-Antitrypsin hat sich während der Evolution offenbar weniger konservativ verhalten als Serumalbumin.

High K+-induced release of somatostatin from the cortical preparation of rat brain

Summary Release of endogenous somatostatin (SRIF) from the rat cerebral cortical slices incubated in Krebs-bicarbonate buffer was increased from the basal rate of 3.4±0.6% of the total SRIF content in 15 min at [K⁺]_o=5.6 mM, to 13.1±1.6% upon raising the [K⁺]_o to 56.6 mM. The high-K⁺ evoked SRIF release was absent when Ca⁺⁺ in the medium was replaced by Mn⁺⁺. The isolated synaptosomes from rat cerebral cortex contain 13.2±3.1 ng SRIF/mg protein compared to 0.33±0.01 ng/mg protein in the cortical tissue as a whole, suggesting that nerve terminals are the main source of the peptide released upon membrane depolarization.The study was supported by a grant from the Medical Research Council of Canada. Acetylcholinesterase activity in anAedes aegypti cell line

Summary Considerable acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity was detected in anAedes aegypti established cell line. The enzyme is blocked by 10^–6 M eserine sulfate, displays excess substrate inhibition and slowly hydrolyzes butyrylthiocholine. A 2-fold stimulation of AChE activity was shown after 2 days exposure to 3×10^–7 M -ecdysone. AChE activity found in the fresh medium is the contribution of the fetal calf serum portion. A direct relationship between levels of serum and the AChE activity in the cultured cells was demonstrated.Acknowledgment. I wish to thank Dr J. Abnormal organization of ovarian follicles in the mutantl(1)su(f) mad-ts ofDrosophila melanogaster

Summary The morphology of ovarian follicles in the temperature-sensitive female-sterile mutantl(1)su(f) ^mad-ts has been studied by means of light and electron microscopy. As the follicle cells gradually degenerate at the restrictive temperature (29°C) the follicles become increasingly disorganized with respect to shape and polarity.Acknowledgments. The jump ofOrchestia cavimana Heller, 1865 (Crustacea,Amphipoda, Talitridae)

Summary The saltatory locomotion of the Talitrid (Crustacea)Orchestia cavimana Heller, 1865, was studied by high frequency cinematography (1000 fps). The jump lasts about 350–400 msec and covers a distance of 18 cm due to an average acceleration of 300 m/sec². Fluorescence of blood cells of the tunicatesPhallusia mamillata andCiona intestinalis

Zusammenfassung Von den Blutzellen derPhallusia mamillata Cuvier zeigen nur die stark vakuolisierten (compartment cells) im UV-Licht eine stabile blaue Fluoreszenz ( _max =5200 und 4600 Å). Sie ist in den Zellgranula lokalisiert. Bei den Blutzellen vonCiona intestinalis L. tritt dagegen eine gelbe Fluoreszenz ( _max = 5900, 5200 und 4600 Å) auf, die nur von den Vanadocyten ausgeht. Diese Fluoreszenz, welche auch von den Testazellen der Oocyten gegeben wird, geht innerhalb einiger Minuten in die blaue Fluoreszenz über.
