Summary Chick feather bulbi cultured in vitro showed an increased DNA synthesis and a delayed keratinization after treatment with ketanserin, a serotonin₂ antagonist with wound-healing properties. In contrast, serotonin stimulates keratinization of the keratinocytes in the bulbus.

Zusammenfassung Schilddrüsenanlagen von Hühnerembryonen, in Ambinon-Medium kultiviert, entwickeln sich schneller und zeigen beschleunigte intrafollikuläre Kolloidbildung. Mit Thiourazil behandelte Kulturen liessen retardierte Follikelbildung und Kolloidbildung erkennen.     

Effects of exogenous thyroxine on the surface morphology of the developing chick anterior corneal epithelium

Summary The production of microvilli on the developing chick anterior corneal epithelium is drastically accelerated by the administration of exogenous thyroxine and the effects are seen as early as 2 days after injection. Thiouracil administration slightly retards the production of microvilli though its effects are not so pronounced.This work was supported by N.I.H. grant Number 05384-16.     

Effects of aresenite and oxamate on the in vitro functional activity of estrogen-dominated rate uterine horns.

Arsenite but not oxamate produce in vitro a distinct depression of estrogen-dominated uterine motility, both in the absence of substrate as well as in the presence of exogenous glucose or lactate. The addition of oxamate to preparations suspended in a medium with lactate as the sole external substrate ameliorates the depression of uterine motility elicited by arsenic.     

Identification of catecholamines and serotonin in the notochords of chick embryos]

The neurotransmitter amines, norepinephrine, dopamine and serotonine have been isolated from Chick notochords. Cholinergic agents produce important modifications in the amount of these amines and of one of their metabolites. The results demonstrate the presence, at a very early stage of development, between the second and the third day of incubation, of biogenic amines and cholinergic receptors.     

Effect of air ionization of blood serotonin in vitro.

The effect of negative and positive air ionisation on siliconized blood serotonin was studied in vitro. The experiments showed that within 10 min positive ionisation increased serotonin levels in total blood (+40%), plasma (+90%), erythrocytes (+50%) and thrombocytes (+240%). On the other hand, negative ionization (10 min) lowered the serotonin content of total blood (-30%), plasma (-42.5%), erythrocytes (-41.7%) and thrombocytes (-72.3%), thus confirming the 'Krueger Effect' in vitro.

Capture and fixation of tritiated serotonin by chick embryo notochord]

The 3 day old Chick notochord capacity to fix tritiated serotonin is maximal in its axis and in cephalic region. Our observations permitting us to find, the intracellular serotonin binding sites, contribute to an explanation of the capture mechanism and suggest a special direct role of the notochord on the monoaminergic neuron cytodifferentiation.
