Chemical analysis of the pheromone blends produced by males and females of the neotropical moth,Mocis megas (Guénée) (Lepidoptera,Noctuidae, Catocalinae)

Summary Pheromonal secretions produced by females and males of the noctuid moth,Mocis megas (Guénée) have been analyzed by gas chromatography and mass spectrometry (EI (electron impact) and CI (chemical ionization)). The female sex pheromone was a blend of (Z,Z,Z) 3,6,9 heneicosatriene (55%) and (Z,Z) 3,6-cis-9S, 10R-epoxyheneicosadiene (45%). Male secretion produced at the level of a prothoracic organ was a blend of two unsaturated major hydrocarbons: (Z,Z) 6,9 heneicosadiene, (64%) and (Z,Z,Z) 3,6,9 heneicosatriene (24%) and C₁₉, C₂₀ and C₂₂ homologues (total ratio 12%), as minor components. The trienic hydrocarbon was present in both sexes. The behavioral role of this male secretion has not yet been elucidated.     

Bombykol biosynthesis from deuterium-labeled (Z)-11-hexadecenoic acid

Summary (Z)-[11,12d ₂]-11-Hexadecenoic acid was applied topically to the pheromone gland of silkworm pupa. After eclosion, the gland components were analyzed by capillary GC-MS. (Z)-11-Hexadecenoic acid, a characteristic fatty acid of the gland, was found to be a precursor of bombykol, (Z)-11-hexadecenol and bombyk acid.We are greatful to Dr Y. Tamaki and Mr H. (R)-(Z,E)-9,11-octadecadien-13-olide: An intriguing lactone fromHeliconius pachinus (Lepidoptera)

Summary A fourteen-membered lactone,(R)-(Z,E)-9,11-octadecadien-13-olide, was isolated from extruded abdominal glands of a Neotropical, nymphalid butterfly,Heliconius pachinus (Lepidoptera). This compound was obtained from mature adults of both sexes, but was not detected in young adults or pupae.     

(Z)-1,17-diaminooctadec-9-ene,a novel aliphatic diamine from coccinellidae

Chemical defense in the three European species ofCrematogaster ants

The composition of the Dufour gland of the antC. scutellaris has been reinvestigated by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. The major components of the gland are (2E,5E,12Z)-4-oxoheneicosa-2,5,12-trien-1-ol acetate (1a) its ¹⁴ and ¹⁶ double bond isomers (1b and1c), and the corresponding (Z,Z)-dienes5a and5b, all containing an acetylated C₂₁ chain. The previously proposed structures1d, 1e, and5c, which are based on an homologous acetylated C₂₃ chain, correspond to minor derivatives present in the gland. Traces of acetylated C₁₉ homologs, tentatively identified as1g-1i, have also been found. The Dufour gland contents of the two other EuropeanCrematogaster species have also been studied.C. auberti is very similar toC. scutellaris in producing mainly1a, 1b and1c, together with the same higher and lower homologs, but it lacks the dienic derivatives5, whereasC. sordidula contains essentially the acetylated C₁₉ compounds1g, 1h, and1i, accompanied by acetylated C₁₇ homologs.     

A peculiar fatty acid, (Z,Z)-9,12,17-octadecatrienoic acid,identified in the phospholipids of the pea aphid,Acyrthosiphon pisum (Harris) (homoptera: aphididae)

A peculiar fatty acid previously detected in the phospholipids of the pea aphid,Acyrthosiphon pisum, is identified as (Z,Z)-9,12,17-octadecatrienoic acid. It is the first report of this compound in the literature. Comparison of fatty acid profiles of phospholipids between normal and aposymbiotic pea aphids shows that aphid symbionts are not responsible for the biosynthesis of this unusual fatty acid.

Karyotypic races of the common shrew (Sorex araneus L.) from northern Poland

Summary Karyotypic races of the common shrew which differed with respect to the combinations of chromosome arms in certain 2-armed autosomes were distinguished in Poland. Two eastern races with the arm combinationik, and one western race with the arm combinationhi in the third pair of autosomes were established. In the contact area of these chromosomal forms, the fourth karyotypic race with the arm combinationhk was found.I wish to express my gratitude to my wife, A.M. Wójcik, M. tRNase Z: the end is not in sight

Although the enzyme tRNase Z has only recently been isolated, a plethora of data has already been acquired concerning the enzyme. tRNase Z is the endonuclease that catalyzes the removal of the tRNA 3′ trailer, yielding the mature tRNA 3′ end ready for CCA addition and aminoacylation. Another substrate cleaved by tRNase Z is the small chromogenic phosphodiester bis(p-nitrophenyl)phosphate (bpNPP), which is the smallest tRNase Z substrate known so far. Hitherto the biological function as tRNA 3′-end processing enzyme has been shown only in one prokaryotic and one eukaryotic organism, respectively. This review summarizes the present information concerning the two tRNase Z substrates pre-tRNA and bpNPP, as well as the metal requirements of tRNase Z enzymes. A reinvestigation of the chemistry of the Dufours gland of the formicine ant,Anoplolepis custodiens

The components of individual Dufours glands excised fromAnoplolepis custodiens workers were analysed by GC-MS. In addition to then-alkanes andn-alkenes previously reported² in these glands, primary alcohols (C₁₉-C₂₂), secondary alcohols (C₂₀-C₂₃), 2-ketones (C₂₀-C₂₃) and possibly carboxylate ethyl esters (C₁₉ and C₂₁) were identified as components of these glands. It seems possible that these high-boiling compounds are used by the workers in laying trails on the hot sandy surfaces of their characteristic habitat and in lining of the inner walls of nests, but no standard compounds have been available to us for any behavioral studies.     

Autoradiographic studies on RNA synthesis and transport in the ovary ofHydrophilus olivaceus fabr. (Hydrophilidae,Polyphaga, Coleoptera)

Summary Autoradiographic studies using³H-uridine in the ovary ofHydrophilus olivaceus Fabr. show that nurse cells, the germinal vesicle and follicular nuclei play an important role in contributing RNA whereby the major portion of RNA comes from the nurse cells.I am grateful to Prof. P. Photodecomposition of orellanine and orellinine,the fungal toxins ofCortinarius orellanus Fries andCortinarius speciossimus

Summary The photosensitivity of orellanine, the main toxin ofCortinarius orellanus Fries mushrooms, and its transformation to orelline via orellinine is discussed. All three substances were found in methanolic extracts ofCortinarius orellanus andCortinarius speciossimus mushrooms. The problem of homogeneity of orellanine is also discussed.Acknowledgment. The occurrence of arachidonic acid in the venom duct of the marine snailConus textile

Summary A crude extract of the venom of the marine snailConus textile Linné caused a powerful contraction in the guinea-pig isolated ileum. The extract of the venom has been fractionated, and the fractions monitored by the contractile effect. Arachidonic acid was shown to be present as an active substance.Acknowledgment. Prianicin A and B,nor-sesterterpenoid peroxide antibiotics from red sea sponges

Summary The antibiotic properties of 2 acidic C₂₄H₄₀O₄ nor-sesterterpenoid peroxides, prianicin A (1) and B (2), against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, and against fungi are herein described. They are 4–10 times more effective than tetracycline againstbeta hemolytic Streptococcus, but significantly non-effective against a variety of gram-negative bacteria.Acknowledgment. Age-dependent tolerance toBaculovirus in last larval instars of the codling moth,Cydia pomonella,L., induced either for pupation or for diapause

Summary LD₅₀ values as well as time-dependent parameters of granulosis virus infections were determined at different times during the last larval instar (L₅) of the codling moth,Cydia pomonella L., induced either for pupation or for diapause. A significant increase of tolerance to virus was found in 48-h-old L₅ induced for pupation, and 24 h later in L₅ induced for diapause.     

Demonstration of the structural connections of the longitudinal muscle cells and circular muscle cells,and interconnections between the two,in the alimentary canal of an oligochaete,Branchiura sowerbyi B.

Summary The longitudinal and circular muscle cells of the alimentary canal of the oligochaete wormBranchiura sowerbyi show intercell couplings. A potent actomyosin ATPase activator from the Okinawan marine spongeAgelas cf.nemoechinata

Summary A bromine-containing alkaloid, oxysceptrin, has been isolated as a potent actomyosin ATPase activator from the Okinawan marine spongeAgelas cf.nemoechinata, and the structure elucidated to be1 on the basis of the 2D NMR spectral data.Acknowledgments. Ca-antagonistic substance from soft coral of the genusSarcophyton

Summary A 14-membered ring diterpenoid named cembrane, possessing Ca-antagonistic action on the isolated rabbit aorta, has been isolated from a soft coral of the genusSarcophyton, and its structure established by X-ray and spectroscopic data.The authors thank Mr. Z. Buffalo α S1-casein; its terminal residues and amino acid composition

Summary BuffaloaS₁-casein was treated with carboxypeptidase-A to determine the C-terminal amino acid residue, which was — leucine-tryptophan. The Sakaguchi reagent was used to confirm arginine as the N-terminal amino acid. The colored p-phenylazophenyl thiohydantions of tryptophan and arginine released from C- and N-terminals respectively were quantitatively estimated and from this molecular weights of buffaloaS₁ casein were calculated and found to be 26,300 and 26,100 respectively.Acknowledgment.
