Taurine concentrations in the aqueous humor and plasma of anesthetized rabbits

Summary Aqueous humor taurine concentrations were found to be significantly higher (p<0.01) than that of the plasma in anesthetized rabbits. Clotting factors of the primary aqueous humor of the rabbit's eye

Résumé On a constaté que l'humeur aqueuse primaire (PAH) de l'il du lapin racourcit le temps de coagulation du plasma humain. Il contient une proportion élevée de facteurs de coagulation, en particulier les facteurs VIII, IX, XI et XII. Il est possible que la propriété coagulante du PAH est due à la présence d'un activateur spécifique agissant directement sur la prothrombine ou sur le facteur X.     

Studies on the action of X-rays on aqueous solutions of nucleic acids and some nucleotides

Zusammenfassung Die Wirkung von Röntgenstrahlen (200 kV) auf wässerige Lösungen von Nukleinsäuren und Nukleotiden wurde unter besonderer Berücksichtigung des Einflusses von molekularem Sauerstoff und Wasserstoffsuperoxyd untersucht. Der so gefundene, nach der Bestrahlung einsetzende Abfall der Viskosität von D.N.A.-Lösungen (after-effect) kann als Hydrolyse der durch die Bestrahlung labilisierten Kohlenstoff-Phosphat-Bindungen angesehen werden. Untersuchungen über die Hydrolyse von bestrahlten Nukleotiden, -P.N.A.- und D.N.A.-Lösungen stehen in vollem Einklang mit obiger Annahme.     

Measurements of the flow of aqueous humor according to a new principle

Zusammenfassung Wird der Vorkammerinhalt des Auges von aussen mit Fluorescin gefärbt, so ist das aus der Pupille herausfliessende Kammerwasser kurzfristig als ungefärbte «Blase», deren Volumen photogrammetrisch bestimmbar ist, sichtbar. Das Minutenvolumen ist durch zwei zeitlich getrennte Messungen feststellbar.     

Genetic basis of some morphological differences between temperate and equatorial populations ofDrosophila melanogaster

The genetic basis of three morphological traits (ovariole number, sternopleural bristle number and wing length) ofDrosophila melanogaster has been investigated in natural populations that show great differences in these traits, i. e. Bordeaux (France) and Loua (Congo). F1 and F2 crosses, and chromosome substitutions between these two populations, were analysed. Maternal and/or X chromosome effects were found for sternopleural bristle number and wing length. For all traits, significant effects from each of the three chromosomes were found, but in general only one or two chromosomes had a major effect. Moreover, in all cases significant interactions between chromosomes were observed, suggesting the existence of epistatic effects. Our results are discussed and compared to those obtained from the analysis of selected laboratory strains.     

Studies on correlations between chloroquine-induced tissue damage and serum enzyme changes in the rat

The administration of chloroquine to rats resulted in a significant elevation of serum enzymes and a corresponding decrease of these enzymes in the tissues. The changes in serum and kidney enzymes were most marked, thus indicating a primary renal dysfunction.     

The relation between some serum and liver proteins in rats studied by immunoelectrophoresis and by ouchterlony's double diffusion method

Zusammenfassung Blutserum-Eiweisse der Ratte und aus Rattenleber isolierte Proteine wurden immunoelektrophoretisch und mit Ouchterlonys Doppeldiffusion untersucht bzw. verglichen. Die Ergebnisse sprechen für Ähnlichkeit oder Identität diverser Serum- und Lebereiweisse.     

Effect of Royal Jelly on serum lipids in experimental animals and humans with atherosclerosis

The primary objective of this review was to assess the size and consistency of Royal Jelly (RJ) effect on serum lipids in experimental animals and humans. The data from animal studies were pooled, where possible, and statistically evaluated by Student's t-test. Meta-analysis was used for the evaluation of human trials. It was found that RJ significantly decreased serum and liver total lipids and cholesterol levels in rats and rabbits and also retarded the formation of atheromas in the aorta of rabbits fed a hyperlipemic diet. Meta-analysis of the controlled human trials of RJ to reduce hyperlipidemia showed a significant reduction in total serum lipids and cholesterol levels and normalization of HDL and LDL as determined from decrease in β/α lipoproteins. The best available evidence suggests that RJ at approximately 50 to 100 mg per day, decreased total serum cholesterol levels by about 14%, and total serum lipids by about 10% in the group of patients studied.     

Studies on the late-pre-beta-lipoprotein of human serum.

Very low density lipoprotein (VLDL) isolated from 3 healthy normolipidaemic subjects had a raised VLDL cholesterol to triglyceride ratio. The VLDL fractions gave 2 pre-beta-bands on agarose gel electrophoresis. Family study of the subjects appears to indicate sex linkage of this trait and a possible polygenic type of inheritance.
