LDH isozyme pattern in induced muscle disease (coxsackie group a virus infection)

Résumé Le zymogramme des LDH du muscle de souriceau nouveau-né souffrant de myosite diffuse causée par le virus de Coxsackie Groupe A est semblable à celui du souriceau sain de même âge, suggérant qu'un zymogramme anormal des LDH dans les affections musculaires n'est pathognomonique que chez certaines espèces.     

Recovery of renal lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) isoenzyme pattern after obstruction relief in experimental hydronephrosis

Summary The release of ureteral occlusion leads to a progressive recovery in LDH isoenzyme pattern with gradual increase of anodic fractions and decrease of middle and cathodic ones. Our findings demonstrate that the recovery is accomplished on the 10–14th day, in agreement with morphological and metabolic observation.This work was partially supported by research grant C.N.R. 730056004.

Azione dei virus poliomielitico e Coxsackie sulle cellule renali di scimmia (Macaca mulatta shaw)

Summary The authors found several modifications, particularly in the nucleolus, in kidney epithelial cells ofMacaca mulatta, kept in culture for 6–8 days, after infection with polio and Coxsackie viruses. They observed, after infection with polio virus, some groups of virus-like bodies, which indicate the possibility that a provocation took place in it.     

A new pattern of hermaphroditism (inducible hermaphroditism) in populations ofOphryotrocha labronica (Annelida Polychaeta)

Summary A new kind of hermaphroditism, which is called inducible hermaphroditism, has been discovered in the otherwise gonochoristic populations ofOphryotrocha labronica of the Gulf of Naples and of the Lagune of Venice. Inducible hermaphrodites, which are fertile in both the male and female phases, represent 25.8% and 31.8% of the Naples and Venice strains respectively. Inducible hermaphrodites are obtained when pairs between adult females — or female phase hermaphrodites — and juveniles are formed. Crosses between inducible hermaphrodites, in different sex phases, pure male and female individuals give progenies whose sex ratios are clearly correlated with the sex genotypes of the parents.     

Early detection of infection of sugarcane by ratoon-stunting disease (RSD)

Zusammenfassung Im Einklang mit Erfahrungen bei Tabak- und Maispflanzen konnte in Blättern des Zuckerrohres nach Impfung mit Saft von an «Ratoon Stunting Disease» erkranktem Zuckerrohr eine Erhöhung des Polyphenoloxydasen-Spiegels festgestellt werden. Eine praktische Anwendung dieser Methode zur frühen Diagnose dieser Viruskrankheit ist noch nicht möglich.     

A new puffing pattern induced by temperature shock and DNP in drosophila

Riassunto Si è notato che shocks di temperatura possono indurre una variazione di «puffing pattern» in ghiandole salivari di Drosophila. Tali «puffing» sono perfettamente reversibili e rappresentano zone di intensa sintesi di RNA. Si è notato che DNP e Na salicilato portano a simili variazioni di «puffing pattern».     

Increase in muscle fibres in the lateralis muscle (white portion) of Mugilidae (Pisces,Teleostei)

Summary A cycle of postlarval growth is described in the white portion of the lateralis muscle of Mugilidae. The cycle was identified histochemically by the myosin-ATPase reaction.This work was supported by a CNR grant (Oceanografia e fondi marini project).     

Ontogenesis of lactate dehydrogenase isozyme patterns in two salmonids (Salmo salar andS. trutta)

Zusammenfassung Die ontogenetischen Änderungen des Isoenzym-Musters der Laktatdehydrogenase (LDH) vonSalmo salar undS. trutta wurde mittels Stärkegel-Elektrophorese verfolgt. Während der frühen Entwicklungsstadien (Furchung und Gastrulation) sind allein die «Herz-Banden» vorhanden. In allen geprüften Organen wird die adulte Bandenzahl unmittelbar nach der Dottersack-Resorption erreicht. Im selben Statium weisen Herzmuskel, Auge und Gehirn bereits das adulte Verteilungsmuster auf, während dieses im Skelettmuskel und der Leber erst nach 2–3 Jahren, vor Erreichung der Geschlechtsreife, auftritt.     

Histochemical localization of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) during cartilaginous cell differentiation in pleurodeles (Pleurodeles waltlii Michah.]

As revealed in chondrogenetic cells the LDH activity that is very low during cellular migration, suddenly increases at the time of cytodifferentiation and reaches a peak at the onset of the first chondrocyte differentiation. A relationship is likely to exist between this increase in LDH-activity, chondroitin-sulfate synthesis and NAD metabolism.     

Exotoxin in malaria infection (Plasmodium berghei)

Zusammenfassung Swiss Mäuse, die unbehandelt eine Infektion mitPl. berghei niemals überleben, wurden mit Serum von frisch infizierten Tieren (12. Infektionstag) immunisiert und anschliessend infiziert. Obgleich sich danach in allen Fällen eine schwere Parasitämie entwickelte, heilten 44% derjenigen Tiere nach dem 35. Infektionstag spontan aus, die mit 3 mg Serumprotein/Maus immunisiert waren. Wegen der offensichtlich eingetretenen Immunoblockade überlebten dagegen nach Immunisation mit höheren Proteinmengen (mehr als 30 mg per Maus) keine Tiere.     

Dystrophic mutation (dy2J) affecting regulation of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and pyruvate kinase (PK) in C57BL/6J mice

Summary The genotype difference (dystrophic vs nondystrophic) in the LDH isozymes is observed in kidney. These differences are evident only at birth and at early developmental stages (before the expression of dystrophic symptoms). The tissue specific genotype differences for PK are limited to the thigh muscle (M form) and heart (L form), after the onset of the condition. These differences may reflect the pleiotropic effect of the dy^2J locus during the temporal regulation of these and other enzymes implicated in muscular dystrophy (MD).This research was financed by a Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council Canada grant to S.M.S.     

The antiviral effect of Keishi-ni-eppi-ichi-to,a tranditional Chinese herbal medicine,on influenza A2(H2N2) virus infection in mice

The antiviral effect of Keishi-ni-eppi-ichi-to (TJS-064), a traditional Chinese herbal medicine, was investigation in mice infected with influenza A₂(H₂N₂) virus. When mice exposed to 5 LD₅₀ dose of the virus were treated orally with a 70 mg/kg dose of TJS-064 1 day before and 1 day and 4 days after the infection, 100% survived over a 25-day experimental period. At the end of this period all the control mice, treated with saline alone, had died; their mean survival time in days (MSD) was 11.2 days. When mice infected with a 10 LD₅₀ dose of the virus were treated with TJS-064, the MSD was >17.4 days and there was a 50% survival rate, while the control group had a MSD of 8.7 days and 0% survival rate. No significant antiviral effect TJS-064 was observed when the agent was administered orally to mice infected with a 100 LD₅₀ or large dose of influenza virus. Pulmonary consolidation, virus titers in lung tissues and HAI titers in sera of infected mice treated with TJS-064 were all significantly lower than those of infected mice treated with saline. Interferon activities were detected in sera of mice treated with the agent at a dose of 100 mg/kg orally. Since viricidal and viristatic activities of the agent against influenza virus were not demonstrated, the antiviral effects of TJS-064 may be expressed through the host's antiviral functions including interferon production.     

A simple approach to the toad's (Bufo melanostictus) nerver muscle preparation

Summary A simple and modified dorsal approach method has been made in the toad's (Bufo melanostictus) sciatic gastrocnemius nerve-musle preparation. This method incurs less blood loss, time consumption, nerve damage and visceral spoil compared to conventional ventral approach method.     

Simian virus 40 infection of uninoculated african green monkeys (Cercopithecus aethiops) revealed by repeated cell passages

Résumé Nous avons trouvé le virus SV₄₀ chez le singeCercopithecus aethiops présumé non infecté. Par la méthode de culture des cellules du rein et en effectuant des passages rapides nous avons pu démontrer l'existence du virus même chez les animaux dépourvus d'anticorps et même dans le cas où le virus n'apparaissait pas durant le premier passage.     

Intraspecific variation of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) isoenzymes in someBelone belone populations from the adriatic and tyrrhenian seas

Riassunto Gli isoenzimi della LDH diBelone belone si presentano multipli e polimorfi all'analisi elettroforetica. Nelle popolazioni studiate si mettono in evidenza 3 genotipi diversi, 2 dei quali a se stanti ed 1 con caratteristiche intermedie. L'ibridazione molecolare in vitro ed il confronto fra le frequenze genotipiche osservate e teoriche dimostrano che si tratta di 2 genotipi omozigoti che incrociandosi danno un ibrido con caratteristiche intermedie.     

A new agent for the treatment of liver fluke infection (Fascioliasis)

Zusammenfassung 3,5-Dijod-3-chlor-4-(p-chlorphenoxy) salicylanilid wird als ein neues Mittel gegen den Viehleberegel (Fasciola hepatica) beschrieben. In Schafen ergab eine Dosis von 5 mg/kg gegen geschlechtsreife Tiere und eine solche von 12,5 mg/kg gegen junge Leberegel eine hohe Wirksamkeit. Bei schwerem, akutem Leberegelbefall blieb sogar eine Dosis von 60 mg/kg ohne toxische Anzeichen. Ebenso wurde eine relativ hohe Wirksamkeit und eine gute Verträglichkeit bei der Behandlung von Leberegelinfektionen in Rindern festgestellt.
