Leucocytozoon infection was studied in a breeding population of sparrowhawks Accipiter nisus in the British Midlands. Almost all transmission was apparently ‘vertical’ from adults to young, at the nest site. Parasites largely disappeared from the blood between October and April, reappearing in a ‘spring relapse’ during the nesting season. Infected birds remained infected for life; there was no evidence of reduced longevity in infected birds once they had dispersed from their natal nest site. There was no assortative mating between infected or uninfected males and females. It is postulated that the concentration of birds at the nest site allows transmission by a non-specific vector breeding in the same vicinity. At other times of year the birds are more regularly dispersed and transmission in unlikely to occur.  相似文献

Metopina ciceri sp. nov. is described on the basis of males with reduced wings, fully winged females, blind females with reduced wings, pupae and larvae. The larvae infest the root nodules of the chickpea, Cicer arietinum L. The blind-morph females are considered to be congeneric with the type species of the genus Typhlophorina Silvestri and this genus is synonymized with Metopina. The males, if procured in isolation, would have been assigned to a separate genus. The evolution of sexual dimorphism and dimorphic females in M. ciceri is discussed in relation to a speculative scenario involving juvenile hormone and heterochrony. It is also speculated that dispersal is undertaken by the sighted fully-winged female morph only. These speculations and the question of whether the infestation of C. arietinum by M. ciceri affects yield remains to be investigated.  相似文献

The population characteristics of four deep‐water pandalid shrimps (Decapoda: Caridea) were studied in the northern Aegean Sea in samples collected annually (1997–2000) in summer, through experimental trawl, at depths down to 600 m. Females were larger than males in Plesionika martia and Plesionika heterocarpus; no significant differences in size of males and females were found in Chlorotocus crassicornis and Plesionika antigai. A trend of increasing size with depth was observed, as well as a linear increase in the proportion of females with increasing size. Sex ratio was skewed towards females at all depths in P. antigai, while in P. heterocarpus and C. crassicornis males dominated the intermediate depths. Negative allometries were apparent in the carapace length–weight relationships in males of all species. Isometric relationships were found in females apart from in P. heterocarpus. The population patterns conform to relevant Mediterranean reports. However, some population differences exist that may reflect the distinct environmental conditions prevailing in the study area.  相似文献

The study reports on the tube-building behaviour of the corophioidean amphipod, Cymadusa filosa Savigny on two algae, Sargassum binderi Sonder and Ulva lactuca Linnaeus, based on experimental protocols using specimens in aquaria and in petri dishes. Cymadusa filosa was observed to construct open-ended, uniform diameter cylindrical tubes using amphipod silk, to bind together faecal pellets, detritus and fronds of Sargassum binderi or Ulva lactuca. Detailed studies of tube-building behaviour were carried out in petri dishes containing Ulva lactuca, using isolated specimens (5–13 mm in size) of different sexes for a period of one and a half months. Both males and females constructed tubes, and an average of four tubes were built by adults in 15 days. Females with young in the brood pouch did not construct new tubes following juvenile release. Juveniles were observed to build tubes using detritus and faecal material only within hours of being released from the brood pouch. The tubes of juveniles were either built on the walls of their mother's tubes or on an algal mass put together by the mother. There was a highly significant positive correlation between body length and tube length in males and females. There was no significant difference in the rate of tube length increase relative to body size between males and females, between males less than or more than 10 mm, or between females of less than or more than 10 mm. Tube-sharing was also observed between males and females.  相似文献

Some morphometric relationships and biometric aspects were studied in the hermit crab Loxopagurus loxochelis (Moreira, 1901) with the purpose of describing its relative growth and finding the size where sexual maturity is reached. Specimens were collected monthly from September 1995 to August 1997 in the Ubatuba region using double-rig trawl nets. A total of 1084 specimens (625 males and 459 females) was analysed. In this species, sexual dimorphism is particularly evident in chela dimensions. Differences between males and females were found in the left propodus length versus cephalothoracic shield length (CSL) and wet weight (WW) versus CSL relationships. Males showed a high positive allometry in chela growth, while females were close to isometry/negative allometry. The size at which a clear differentiation occurred in the growth of the propodus length and in the increase in weight of males and females was between 4.5 and 6.0mm CSL, suggesting that size at which sexual maturity is reached.  相似文献

Anurans can be classified as explosive or prolonged breeders. In species with short breeding periods, intensive competition for females is expected. We analyse the temporal breeding pattern of Melanophryniscus aff. montevidensis, a bufonid inhabiting grasslands of Argentina, whose breeding is concentrated in events of short duration. Males are active during more than one breeding event per season, whereas most females take part in a single event per season. Active males outnumbered females by up to 14 times at one event, operational sex ratio (OSR) ranged from 0.07 to 0.75 and intensity of sexual selection (I s) from 0.69 to 24. We found a negative association between I s and OSR, but no correlation between number of active males per event and OSR or I s. The OSR is the key that regulates the intensity of sexual selection, nevertheless, and in spite of being explosive breeders, females would potentially have chances to select their mate.  相似文献

The adult behaviour of Odontota dorsalis on its host plant Robinia pseudo-acacia was studied by following marked individuals in nature. Copulations often lasted several hours, and were characteristically followed by long escort phases in which males remain mounted atop females. Pairing lasted as long as several days. Most pairs broke up around the time of day when most females were ovipositing. Females normally laid a small cluster of eggs once per day. Both sexes mated repeatedly, and females did not resist copulations.

Long pairings in O. dorsalis may have evolved because the encounter rate between the sexes is high and costs to the female low. It is suggested that escort behaviour will be found in many other species with similar ecology and in which males remain mounted on females while copulating.  相似文献

In this study, the effects of rearing temperature on survival and development rate of pre-imaginal stages and on wing length of adult Culex pipiens (Diptera: Culicidae) were evaluated. Larvae I were reared until adult emergence at seven constant temperatures between 7 and 33°C. The highest survival was found at 25°C. The development rate of the immature stages decreased with increasing temperature until 30°C. The threshold temperature and thermal constant were, respectively, 5.2°C and 186.5 degree-days for males, and 5.5°C and 199.5 degree-days for females. According to a non-linear model, the lower and upper thermal thresholds were, respectively, 8.4°C and 34.4°C for males, and 9.8°C and 34.2°C for females. Wing length decreased with increasing temperature. Wings of females were longer than those of males. This study showed that survival and development of immatures and adult size were affected by rearing temperature. In addition, results suggest that this effect may differ between sexes.  相似文献

Several boring peracarid species engage in extended parental care with parents tolerating small juveniles in their burrows, but only anecdotal observations have been reported from boring isopods of the genus Limnoria. The isopod Limnoria chilensis Menzies is frequently found in holdfasts of the macroalgae Macrocystis pyrifera (L.) C. Agardh and Durvillea antarctica (Chamisso) Hariot. In the present study, holdfasts of D. antarctica that harboured L. chilensis were carefully dissected in order to examine the association pattern of reproductive females and small juveniles. In most infested holdfasts, L. chilensis reached very high densities of 43.7 ± 3.9 (mean ± SE) individuals cm?2 (range: 0–90 individuals cm?2). The overall sex ratio (females:males) was close to unity (1.2). Male size varied between 1.5 and 2.6 mm body length (BL) and female size between 1.5 and 3.6mm BL. The percentage of reproductive females was low (19.7% of all females), and only the largest females (>2.6 mm BL) were reproductive. Embryo numbers ranged between six and 19 per female and a significant correlation between female BL and the number of embryos was found. Several females were found with small juveniles (0.8–1.2 mm BL) in the terminal end of their burrows. On several occasions, aggregations of similar-sized juveniles (1.0–1.5 mm BL) in their own burrows were found near a female burrow, indicating that these juveniles initiated their first individual burrows from within the maternal burrows. Some females with small juveniles in the terminal end of their burrows were either accompanied by males or they were ovigerous, indicating that they may have been in the process of producing a second brood. The fact that juveniles build their first burrows in the protection of female burrows suggests that such small juveniles have not yet developed full boring capacity. Extended parental care in this (and other boring) peracarid species represents a mechanism facilitating high juvenile survival rates. Given the highly local recruitment, it is suggested that the reproductive biology of this isopod has strong implications for Its population biology.  相似文献

Although D’Orbigny’s slider (Trachemys dorbigni) is the most abundant freshwater chelonian species in southern Brazil, little is known about its feeding habits. Our goal was therefore to evaluate this species’ dietary composition and niche variation there. For this, we collected road-killed animals (n = 73) on a federal highway (BR 392) between 2002 and 2003, and analysed their gut contents. We identified 26 different dietary items, and our results indicated that D’Orbigny’s slider is omnivorous in this area. Total food volume, as well as the degree of herbivory and carnivory, were similar between males and females. However dietary composition of plants was different: although both males and females fed on underwater plant matter, only females consumed surface macrophytes. This finding suggested differential microhabitat usage between males and females throughout the swamps.  相似文献

Gymnonerius fuscus and Telostylinus sp. near duplicatus are two neriid flies which breed in rot-holes (often beetle larval borings) in fallen trees in tropical forests. Males of both species attempt to establish territories beside rot-holes likely to attract females for egg-laying purposes. Monopolization of incoming females and paternity of any eggs laid are therefore assured. Aggression between males of the larger species G. fuscus is largely through ritualized intimidatory signalling, i.e. wing-flicks. Actual physical aggression only occurs when opponents are evenly matched. By contrast, lengthy and hectic wrestling matches on stilted legs is the normal method of establishing site-ownership in the smaller species T. near duplicatus. Males only seek to exclude conspecific males, such that both species may establish simultaneous ownership of a single rot-hole without interacting. Males of G. fuscus who ‘sneak’ matings away from the territories of larger males, or who manage to mate within a territory, gain little or no reproductive benefit. This is because the territory-owner prevents all females, other than his own current mate, from laying eggs within his territory and females seem reluctant to utilize non-territorial rot-holes for oviposition.  相似文献

Reproduction is a critical event in the life cycle of animals, and a high amount of energy is allocated to it. The aim of this study was to characterize the reproductive biology of two recently described species of Hyalella from the north-east region of state of Rio Grande do Sul in southern Brazil. The specimens were collected during 12 months from a stream source (Hyalella georginae) and from a water reservoir (H. gauchensis), in Palmeira das Missões municipality, state of Rio Grande do Sul. Upon sampling, ovigerous females and pairs in precopulatory behaviour were separated into microtubes. In the laboratory, the cephalothorax length (CL in mm) of all specimens was measured. Male size at onset of sexual maturity was larger than that of the females, in both species. There was a correlation between the size of paired males and females: larger males carried larger females, in both Hyalella species. Precopulatory pairs were found throughout the year; however, H. georginae had a higher frequency in spring, and H. gauchensis in autumn. There was a positive correlation between the CL of ovigerous females and the number of eggs/juveniles. A reduction in the number of eggs throughout the embryonic development was observed in H. georginae. The average fecundity of H. georginae was significantly higher than H. gauchensis. The differences between the reproductive biology of these species may be related to the physical and environmental conditions at which they are exposed in their habitats.  相似文献

We studied the feeding ecology of Eutropis multifasciata in the tropical plains of central Vietnam to understand better the foraging mode, spatiotemporal and sexual variation in dietary composition, and rarefaction curves of prey-taxon richness for males and females. Stomach contents (n = 161) were collected from October 2013 to May 2014 using a nonlethal stomach-flushing technique. A total of 680 food items (624 animal items and 56 plant items) was found in 161 stomachs of skinks, representing 19 unique animal categories. We found that the diet of E. multifasciata is composed mainly of small, sedentary and clumped prey and that this skink specialises on spiders, insect larvae, snails, grasshoppers and crickets (with a combined importance index of 60%). Dietary composition, prey size and total prey volume in E. multifasciata changed between dry and rainy seasons and among regions. The total volume of food items consumed by males was larger than that of females, and the diversity and evenness index of prey categories were larger in males than in females. However, using rarefaction curves revealed that females have the higher prey-taxon richness after points between 130 and 140 prey items for frequency, and between 160 and 170 prey items for number of items, and the differences were not statistically significant. The foraging behaviour of E. multifasciata best fits a ‘widely foraging’ model.  相似文献

The breeding biology and male territorial behaviour of the large-headed leaf-frog (Phyllomedusa megacephala) were studied in three temporary altitudinal streams located in the Cerrado biome of southeastern Brazil, during three consecutive years (2007–2009). Phyllomedusa megacephala showed significant sexual dimorphism, with females being bigger and heavier than males. Acoustic and physical interactions between males defending or not defending territories including amplectant and non-amplectant males, patrolling behaviour by males without established territories, and triple amplexus were observed. Neither males nor females were observed using visual cues when searching for mates. We found that males that were present at breeding sites in previous years bred more successfully and maintained territory better.  相似文献

Population and reproductive behaviour aspects of the glass frog Espadarana prosoblepon are well known for populations from Central America, but similar information is lacking for populations from South America. We recorded the reproductive ecology of a population of the glass frog E. prosoblepon in the city of Armenia, Central Andes of Colombia. With weekly surveys with mark-recapture between December 2013 and November 2015, we monitored activity patterns and evaluated if the probability of males mating is associated to their body size or to chorus tenure (i.e. the number of nights a same individual is calling for attracting a mate). In addition, upon observing an amplexus, we recorded the behaviour of the individuals until oviposition and noted characteristics of egg clutch. We recorded 47 males and 32 females, nine amplexus events, eight ovipositions, and 21 egg clutches (35.4 ± 4.79 eggs per clutch, = 29). Activity of males and females and the number of egg clutches were positively correlated to rainfall. Mating success of males was not associated to their body size, but it was positively associated to longer chorus tenure; clutches from large females had a higher number of eggs than clutches from small females. Oviposition occurred on average 3.76 ± 1.74 hours after we first observed the amplexus, occurring 93.1% of the time in fronds of Selaginella geniculata at an average height of 1.58 ± 0.44 m. After the oviposition, the male left the site, while the female remained between 30 and 45 min, partially covering the eggs. The reproductive behaviour of E. prosoblepon did not vary widely between a population in Costa Rica and our population in time to oviposition, and mating success of males associated to chorus tenure; however, in our study population we recorded a larger clutch size and the preference for S. geniculata fronds as oviposition substrate.  相似文献

Anadromous fish could have intraspecific groups with different life histories; identification of these is very important for management and conservation. Geometric morphometrics represents a quick and cost-effective method to identify such intraspecific groups. In this study, geometric morphometrics of Pontic shad (Alosa immaculata) migrants from the Danube River were investigated, as was Fulton's condition factor (K), hepatosomatic index (HSI) and gonadosomatic index (GSI). Pontic shad specimens were collected during April and May of 2004 and 2006. The sample comprised four groups (65 males and 56 females in 2004; 110 males and 78 females in 2006). Geometric morphometrics revealed differences in shape that were statistically significant for both year (nested analysis of variance: F = 13.84; p < 0.001) and sex (nested analysis of variance: sex nested in year, F = 1.71; p < 0.01). The major differences between years were in head shape and position of fins. The most significant difference between females and males was in the dorsolateral expansion of the mid-body section with emphasis on the higher dorsal part of the body. Values for K in this work (0.65–0.70) were the lowest recorded for Pontic shad in the Danube River. Additional investigations involving both geometric morphometrics and molecular genetics are necessary to confirm the presence of races. This could be important information for conservation purposes as Pontic shad is listed as Vulnerable on the International Union for Conservation of Nature list.  相似文献

Animal mating systems are moulded by ecological factors, mainly the temporal patterns of reproduction. We report the reproductive period, use of microhabitats, clutch and egg sizes, reproductive efforts, occurrence of sexual size dimorphism, and the relation between body size and fecundity in the gravid females of Trachycephalus venulosus and Scinax fuscovarius at Serra da Bodoquena, Central Brazil. The reproduction of both species was correlated with the rainy season. Females of T. venulosus produced more eggs and their eggs were larger than those of S. fuscovarius. The females of both species were larger and heavier than males. The reproductive effort was measured as the ratio of gonad mass in relation to body mass. Females of both species presented similar reproductive efforts, but males of S. fuscovarius invested more in gonads compared to males of T. venulosus. Trachycephalus venulosus presented significant correlation between snout–vent length versus number of mature eggs and body mass versus number of mature eggs and ovarian mass. Scinax fuscovarius showed significant correlation between body mass versus ovarian mass. Trachycephalus venulosus is an explosive breeder, whereas S. fuscovarius has prolonged reproduction. These species are able to adapt to several types of habitat, due to behavioural and physiological plasticity.  相似文献
