Summary

A new genus and species of nematobothriine didymozoid, Halvorsenius exilis, is described. These worms occur unpaired and unencysted in the connective tissue of the mackerel Scomber scombrus, especially in the pericardium, the ‘throat’ region, the orbits and the region of the kidneys. Halvorsenius belongs to a group of genera which possess three uterine loops and two testes, but can be distinguished by the atrophy of the gut and other features. Live worms occur only in young mackerel, although aggregations of eggs are found in older fish. It appears that the eggs are retained in utero until the death of the worm and that there is no obvious mechanism for voiding the eggs from the fish other than through the death of this host.  相似文献

Summary

Ctenogobius veliensis, a new species of gobiid fish is described from the South-West coast of India. The characters of the fish conform to those of the genus Ctenogobius Gill but differ markedly from those of other recorded species of the genus. Apart from the usual, external morphological, morphometric and metistic characters, several other features such as the cephalic-lateralis system, skeletal features and morphology of the alimentary canal are also studied and have been found to be of significance for identifying the species. The fish shows distinct sexual dimorphism in many features.  相似文献

Summary

Eleven species of marine mites (Halacaroidea) are recorded from intertidal and subtidal collections made along the coast of California. Four new species Copidognathus spinifer sp. nov., Copidognathus ilsebartschi sp. nov., Agaue variabilis sp. nov., and Halacarus newelli sp. nov. are described. Agaue californica (Hall) is completely redescribed. Agauopsis newelli Krantz and Halacarus magniporus Krantz, new records for California, are diagnozed and described. Agauopsis curvata Krantz is diagnozed and further described. The juvenile stages of Copidognathus curtus Hall are described. The range of Agauopsis filirostris MacQuitty is extended within California. A tabular key to the Californian species of Copidognathus is given. The distribution of the halacaroids in California is compared to that of other fauna.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Three marine fish species of the Indo-Pacific genus Champsodon were reported as invasive species in the Eastern Mediterranean between 2009 and 2012; Champsodon nudivittis, C. vorax, and C. capensis. These are presumed to invade through the Suez Canal, but only C. nudivittis is known from the Red Sea, so the presence of C. vorax and C. capensis is surprising. To test the validity of the taxonomic identification of these two species, this study combined traditional morphology, genetic barcoding, and photography investigation. Our results demonstrate that only one species, C. nudivittis, has migrated into the Eastern Mediterranean.  相似文献

Summary

An illustrated key is given to the 6 species of Enicospilus found on the Galápagos Islands. Five, E. stylus, E. katanus, E. vidus, E. donor and E. ditor, are described as new and one Neotropical species, E. trilineatus (Brullé), is recorded for the first time from these islands. The relationships between the Galápagos and continental South American species are briefly discussed.  相似文献

Summary

Some new and poorly-known taxa of batodesmine diplopods are described from northern South America, with notes on their affinities. New genera include Igaraparana, based on I. batesi, sp. nov. from Amazonian Colombia; Curimagua, based on C. granulata, sp. nov. from Edo. Falcon, Venezuela; and Cheirogonus, based on C. pittieri, sp. nov. from Panama. The inadequately proposed species Leptodesmus interrupticolor Silvestri (southeastern Ecuador) is redescribed and figured from type material, and referred to Cordilleronomus as its third species. The enigmatic genus Tunochilus Chamberlin, 1950, is clarified and referred to the Batodesmini from its incorrect location in the Cryptodesmidae, with notes and drawings made from a paratype of the type species T. marginis; the presumptive congener T. marcuzzii is described as new from material taken at Caracas, Venezuela.  相似文献

Résumé

1. 1. There is a symbiosis between Sertularia operculata and Squalus acanthias, and between Seralia lendigera and Hippocampus ramulosus—there being but a single case reported for each pair of organisms. It is probable that these associations are entirely accidental.

2. 2. Of Stylactis minoi and Minous inermis, no fewer than twenty-nine specimens of the fish (presumably all ever taken) wherever found—and they have been taken from five widely distant stations on both coasts of India, and from Japan—were infested with the hydroid. Furthermore, so far as known, this particular hydroid has never been found save on this particular fish (inermis). These facts would seem to indicate that this is a purposive or obligate symbiosis.

3. 3. About one hundred specimens of Hypsagonus quadricornis were taken in Puget Sound. Thirty-seven of these were preserved, and ten of them were found to be sparsely covered with Perigonimus pugetensis. Other specimens of the fish taken outside Puget Sound and in Behring Sea all lacked the hydroid. Consideration of all these facts leads to the conclusion that the association is symbiotic and more or less accidental.

4. 4. One case has been presented of Hydrichthys mirus attached to Seriola zonata in Narragansett Bay. Parasitism is alleged, but the proofs offered, that there was some apparent degeneration on the part of the hydroid and some slight evidence of wasting away of the muscles of the fish at the point of attachment, are at best inconclusive, there being no evidence from sections presented to show actual anastomosis of the tissues of the two organisms. From the evidence presented one must conclude that this is only a case of symbiosis.

5. 5. One case is known of the attachment of a Nudiclava to a fish, Monacanthus, from the Andaman Sea. Parasitism is alleged in the title of the paper, but disclaimed in the text, since, in sections cut through the basal plate and the skin to which it was attached, such was not proven. Furthermore, the finding of food in the hydranths discounts the idea of parasitism. This case also must be classed as a symbiosis.

6. 6. True parasitism has been repeatedly shown to exist between an aberrant hydroid, Polypodium hydriforme, and the ovarian eggs of the Volga sterlet, Acipenser ruthenus. This has been definitely established by the work of four investigators, extending in time from 1872 to 1922—a half century. Except in its earliest stages, Polypodium has the nutritive cell-layer of its stolon, the endoderm, on the outside bathed in the egg-yolk. Later this becomes inverted and a large amount of yolk is carried into the common cavity. The egg is used up in nourishing the parasite.

7. 7. True parasitism has been shown between Hydrichthys boycei and numerous individuals of three species of fishes—Ambassis natalensis, Mugil sp., and an undetermined fish belonging to the Glyphidodontidæ—in Durban Bay, South Africa. The parasites were attached to various parts of the fishes, especially the fins. At the points of attachment, haustoria were sent down into flesh and into blood-vessels, and by means of these the parasite fed on the tissues of its host. Furthermore, on none of the hydranths were tentacles ever found, nor was any food ever found in them. Strange to say, the parasite never covers any large area of the fish, and apparently presently drops off leaving a scar behind.

Summary

A new monotypic genus, Corcyrogobius, is proposed for the gobiid fish, Gobius liechtensteini Kolombatovic 1891, known only from its Adriatic typelocality of Kor?ula, Yugoslavia. The species is redescribed and a lectotype designated from probable syntype material, which also includes examples of Odondebuenia balearica (Pellegrin & Fage, 1907), supposed by Kolombatovic to be adults of G. liechtensteini. The affinities of C. liechtensteini and the related genus Odondebuenia are discussed with reference to American seven-spined gobies, the Indo-Pacific Gladiogobius, and the subfamily Lioterinae, currently placed in the Eleotridae. Overall similarities between these gobies are described, their possible phylogeny outlined, and the Lioterinae transferred to the family Gobiidae.  相似文献

Resumé

This paper is mostly concerned with records of mites new to the British Isles. Odd notes on the biology of some species previously recorded from these islands deal with various aspects of the general biology of the different species. The following species are described as new to science:—Parasitus hibernicus, Phaulodiaspis euris, Ettmulleria dipterorum, and Schwiebea boletophagi. The newly discovered male of Polyaspinus cylindricus Berl. is described fro the first time and its importance in the study of the comparative parative morphology of the Mesostigmata is discussed. The division of the genus Pergamasus by Hull in 1918 is treated in some detail and his subgenera, Plesiogamasus, Paragamasus are promoted to generic status. Some remarks are made on the generic divisions of the Hypoaspis complex of the Laelaptidae and two new genera of Dr. Hull, Chamolaelaps and Halbertia, are brought forward and the types of all the above genera of Dr. Hull designated. New records of Leptus porcinus Hull, 1918 are given and the species is figured in detail.  相似文献
