Summary

The locomotion of the larvae of the syrphid, Syrphus ribesii and the calliphorid, Calliphora vomitoria are described. Syrphus has stylet-like mandibles whilst Calliphora has stout, hooked mandibles but they both move in a similar fashion. Locomotion in each is caused by a wave of linear contraction of the segments at the hind end which passes forwards. This is shown to be consistent with the view that the role of the mandibular hooks in locomotion is only subsidiary.  相似文献

Rearing data from higher plants, carrion and bird and mammal nests and burrows are provided for eight species of Heleomyzidae (Diptera): Heleomyzinae: Heleomyza borealis Boheman, Scoliocentra brachypterna (Loew) and Eccoptomera microps (Meigen); Heteromyzinae: Tephrochlamys flavipes (Zetterstedt), Tephrochlamys tarsalis (Zetterstedt) and Heteromyza rotundicornis (Zetterstedt); and Suillinae: Suillia ustulata (Meigen) and Suillia variegata (Loew). The puparia of these species are described. Unique characters and characters in combination distinguish each species and their subfamilies, suggesting that early stages are a valuable source of taxonomic data. Head skeleton and other features suggest contrasting food gathering mechanisms, with heleomyzines suited to feeding on food of low viscosity, suillines on high-viscosity or firm food and heteromyzines on food of intermediate viscosity.  相似文献

Chalaraspidum alatum and Pseudochalaraspidum hanseni represent monotypic genera belonging to the Lophogastridae (Lophogastrida, Peracarida). Both species have previously been confused, although several characters permit their separation: e.g., C. alatum has only one small projection in the centre of the epimera of pleon segment 6 but P. hanseni has two distinct, pointed projections on the epimera of pleon segment 6. The palp of the maxilla is two-segmented in C. alatum and one-segmented in P. hanseni. The mouthparts, including labrum, mandibles, paragnaths, maxillula, maxilla and maxilliped are described in detail. Certain characters found in the two species, such as asymmetrical paragnaths, left mandible with semicircular incisor process, right mandible without lacinia mobilis, maxilliped with blade-shaped exopod are also found in the representatives of the remaining lophogastrid genera. These characters are interpreted as apomorphies supporting the monophyly of the Lophogastrida.  相似文献

The mating behaviour of Staminodeus vectoris Franz (Curculionidae: Curculioninae: Derelomini) is described and discussed in light of a phylogeny of Staminodeus Franz. At La Selva, Costa Rica, S. vectoris is associated with the staminodes of the inflorescences of Asplundia uncinata Harling and several other species of Cyclanthaceae. The males have a row of 6–10 teeth along the margin of the protibia, whereas the females have a small, curved spine on the frons. The adults arrive in numbers at the inflorescences during the pistillate phase of the anthesis of A. uncinata, feeding on the staminodes. Eventually, a female detaches a staminode with her mandibles, falls to the ground, and transports it to the site of oviposition in the leaf litter. First, she crawls underneath the staminode, then moves it posteriorly with her legs, and finally returns to its distal end before repeating the process. The female turns on her back and maintains her original position during the movement of the staminode, using her frontal spine as a point of resistance against the substrate. Meanwhile, a male associates with the staminode. The males fight with their prothoracic legs, executing fast blows until their protibial teeth cling and dislodge competitors from the staminode. The positive and negative allometries of the lengths of the male protibia and female spine, are consistent with their functions in the contexts of sexual and natural selection, respectively. The phylogeny of all seven species of Staminodeus hypothesises that female transporting behaviour evolved before male fighting behaviour.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The Trachypetidae is a newly recognised family of Ichneumonoidea endemic to Australia and one of the most distinctive wasp groups on the continent based on their large body size and superficial resemblance to some ichneumonids and aculeate wasps. The family is united in the presence of a unique sensory or glandular structure at the base of the mandibles. It is known from three genera: Cercobarcon Tobias, 1979, Megalohelcon Turner, 1918 (= Rhamphobarcon Tobias, 1979) and Trachypetus Guérin de Méneville, 1830, totalling eight described species. Trachypetines are rarely encountered, with very few specimens having been collected or recognised in collections since the group was revised in 1993. Here we report on a newly discovered species from Cape York Peninsula, Queensland, the first to be recognised in more than 25 years, and take much pleasure in naming it after Dr John La Salle, in celebration of his career.http://www.zoobank.org/urn:lsid:zoobank.org:pub:3F0147A8-F628-4869-B7FD-2E1560145734  相似文献

This study provides a detailed account of the natural history and foraging biology of the ponerine ant Dinoponera gigantea in a rainforest in north Brazil. The species nests on the ground and the colonies contain 70–96 workers. Ant activity is negatively correlated with temperature, and is more intense at dawn and dusk. Foragers leave the nest independently and search for food individually on the leaf litter, within ca 10 m around the nest. Workers are opportunistic feeders that collect seeds and fruits, and hunt for live prey as well as scavenge for dead animal matter. The dry weight of food items ranges from <10 mg (spiders, insect parts) to >400 mg (seeds, fruits). There is no nestmate recruitment during the search for or retrieval of food, irrespective of food type and size. Foragers have a high directional fidelity, and ants from neighbouring colonies may engage in ritualized territorial contests at the border of their foraging areas. The foraging ecology of D. gigantea is compared with other ponerine species living in tropical forests, as well as with other ant groups showing similar behavioural patterns.  相似文献

The ant Acropyga sauteri Forel has an obligate, mutualistic symbiosis with a mealybug, Eumyrmococcus smithii Silvestri, on Okinawa Island, southern Japan. The mealybugs live inside ant nests nearly all their lives, and the ants depend on them for food. Alate foundress queens carry mealybugs during their nuptial flights, using them to establish new colonies at new sites. However, important aspects of the symbiosis have not yet been elucidated. The present study characterizes the basic biology of the symbiosis and describes for the first time the morphologies of all growth stages of E. smithii. Our study suggests that E. smithii has only one nymphal stage, followed by a female pupal stage or male prepupal stage. Intensive sampling of ant nests across seasons showed that A. sauteri prefers nest sites 5–20 cm underground. Acropyga sauteri produced reproductive stages mainly in mid‐March or early April, and numbers of both ant workers and mealybugs increased from spring to summer. Experimental determination of colony identity with a method using nestmate recognition by ants suggested that each ant colony rarely has a perimeter greater than 30 cm, that the ants are monogynous, and that different ant colonies are densely aggregated along the root system of a plant, adjacent to each other but not interflowing. Both symbiotic partners were vulnerable to attacks by several common subaerial ant species following physical disturbance to their nests.  相似文献

Exomalopsis are ground-nesting species, and their food-niche breadth is little known due the difficulty in locating the nests and finding efficient bait plants to attract these bees. Some species of Exomalopsis were recorded as tomato, hot pepper and eggplant pollinators. Information about the food niche could be useful to increase Exomalopsis populations, providing consistent and comparable data for the enrichment of natural and crop areas with adequate plant sources. This study aimed to determine the food niche and the role of pollen size in the diet of E. fulvofasciata. We analysed pollen loads of 28 individuals of E. fulvofasciata collected from bait plants, in two natural areas of the Brazilian savannah. Only five pollen types belonging to the families Malpighiaceae, Solanaceae, Leguminosae, Myrtaceae and Lythraceae were important for this species. This result indicates that E. fulvofasciata is probably a polylectic species. However, we noticed that the Byrsonima used as bait plants contribute significantly for its larval provision, indicating that small pollen grains were more frequently collected.  相似文献

A detailed list of larval food plants of Mylothris based on review of published records in the literature is presented. Food plants have been reported for some 23 species (40%), although in only eight species (14%) of butterflies have plants been identified to species level. The food plants represent two unrelated orders, Santalales and Polygonales, although nearly all records (93%) are from four closely related families in the former group. Within the Santalales, the family Loranthaceae, a diverse group of aerial stem‐parasitic shrubs (mistletoes), is most frequently exploited. Only two species of Mylothris, M. bernice (Hewitson) and M. rubricosta (Mabille), which are closely related and possibly comprise a single species, are associated with Polygonaceae (Polygonales). Comparison of the morphology of the early stages of M. bernice, and other evidence, clearly indicates that M. bernice/rubricosta belong to Mylothris and do not represent a separate genus or sister group. Comments are made on these diverse food plant relationships within the context of a modern phylogeny of the Santalales and the evolution of parasitic plant feeding in butterflies in general. It is suggested that Mylothris had its major period of evolution and adaptive radiation on the Loranthaceae, probably sometime after the differentiation of most of the families or lineages in the Santalales (rather than on an earlier ancestral branch at or near the root of the Santalales evolutionary tree), and that this association has facilitated host switching multiple times. While more field data are clearly needed to ascertain the full extent of host specificity and range of mistletoe species exploited by Mylothris, this is unlikely to significantly change the patterns of food plant utilization seen at the higher taxonomic (ordinal and familial) levels. Mylothris represents one of only a few diverse groups of Lepidoptera, and insects in general, known to feed predominantly on African mistletoes.  相似文献

Thrybius togashii Kusigemati is found to be an ectoparasitoid of larvae of a phytophagous eurytomid, Tetramesa sp. (Hymenoptera), growing gregariously in internodal cavities of reeds (Phragmites japonica Steud.), in Japan. The female of T. togashii oviposits into reed canes and its predaceous larva consumes almost all eurytomid larvae in an internodal cavity. This species is bivoltine. The mode of parasitism of this species is unique in some respects. First, when the female oviposits, no food resources are available in the reed. Second, the parasitoid allows part of the host larvae to grow and exploits increasing food resources. The egg, pupa and first to final instar larvae and adult male are described and figured for the first time. Colour dimorphism in both sexes and adult morphology adapted to habitat and ovipositional substrate are also discussed.  相似文献

The seed beetles, Acanthoscelides quadridentatus and Acanthoscelides winderi are here recorded for the first time feeding on seeds of Mimosa setosa var. paludosa in the Brazilian Cerrado. Our main aims were to describe the temporal distribution, seed damage, and notes on the natural history of these two species on their host plant. We hypothesised that: (a) healthy seeds from infested fruits would have worse germination rate than healthy seeds from noninfested fruits, and (b) females of seed beetles would lay more eggs on large fruits. We made field observations and an experimental field study with the presence of seed beetles versus their exclusion on plants. Results revealed that seed beetles are synchronised with fruiting, with a temporal partitioning in occurrence. Attacked seeds did not germinate, whereas healthy seeds from infested fruits had worse germination rate than healthy seeds from noninfested fruits. Females of seed beetles laid more eggs on large fruits. These results suggest that seed beetles avoid competition through a temporal partitioning curcial for their coexistence, and select large fruits to oviposit as these fruits probably provide more food resource for their offspring. Furthermore, plants might perceive seed beetles’ damage and then reduce resource allocation on infested fruits.  相似文献

Male Mannophryne trinitatis transport their larvae on their backs to predator‐free pools and deposit them there. The experiments reported here investigated M. trinitatis male deposition behaviour in containers placed near a heavily fish‐populated stream at Mount Saint Benedict, northern Trinidad. Choice of deposition site was not related to height above or distance from the stream. The low mean number of tadpoles deposited in each container in the field and in a laboratory experiment indicated that most males tended not to deposit complete clutches in single pools. Deposition experiments in the laboratory with a choice of different‐sized containers showed that deposition was pool size dependent, with more tadpoles deposited in larger containers. Deposition behaviour when given a choice of containers with leaf litter (a source of food and shelter) and with no leaf litter showed no significant preference. Tadpoles grown in different water volumes with different food sources revealed that tadpole growth was best in larger water volumes containing leaf litter. Regular tadpole inspections at a pool in the field established that most tadpoles present were the result of downstream movement.  相似文献

Operculariidae includes sessile ciliate species mainly attached to diverse substrates, but records are scarce for their attachment to aquatic true bugs. The goal of this contribution is to provide new cytological data with optical and scanning electron microscopy of Orbopercularia lichtensteini, and some notes about their distribution on a Mexican corixid. We manually collected the corixids in a pond in Mexico during a six-month period, and all individuals were revised to observe the peritrichids. We calculated the abundance and prevalence, with an emphasis on the specific micro-location of the epibiotic peritrich on the host Corisella edulis. A total of 36,205 peritrichids were recorded in 158 corixids. The colonies with fine striated zooids were dichotomously branched and mostly attached to left eyes, but also on other body regions, i.e. left wings and rostrum. We conclude that some morphological colony traits bring some advantages for food particle capture, and aspects of the biology and morphology of Corisella edulis play an important role in determining the spatial distribution of O. lichtensteini.  相似文献

We identified the food niche breadth of two sympatric species of oil-collecting bees, Centris (Heterocentris) analis (Fabricius, 1804) and Centris (Hemisiella) tarsata Smith, 1874, based on pollen analyses of larval food. We tested differences in the use of pollen sources considering the anther type and pollen size of the flowers. The species presented a low similarity in the use of pollen sources and C. analis had a wider niche breadth than C. tarsata. Centris analis mainly used Heteropterys spp. and other flowers with non-poricidal anthers. In contrast, C. tarsata commonly used Solanum lycocarpum A. St.-Hil., as well as other flowers with poricidal anthers. Despite the differences in pollen composition of larval food, both species predominantly used medium-sized pollen grains. Although C. analis and C. tarsata are sympatric species, belonging to the same functional group and presenting an overlap in nesting periods, they used different pollen sources, which suggests the occurrence of food niche partitioning.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Temperature appears to have pervasive effects on larval development, feeding and movement patterns of tri-spine horseshoe crabs, Tachypleus tridentatus. To investigate how temperature determines their geographic distribution range, we examined the survival rate (SR), survival time (ST) and food intake of subadult T. tridentatus under different temperature levels in a seven-day experiment, followed by a three-day recovery to room temperature at 25°C. Significantly lower SR and ST of subadults were found at 40°C after the end of the seven-day experiment. Meanwhile, SR and ST of individuals at 0°C were negatively affected when the temperature was brought back to 25°C. Mean food intake of the subadults was statistically lower at 0–20°C and 35–40°C compared to that at 25°C and 30°C. After the subsequent three-day recovery to 25°C, only the individuals previously exposed to 15°C and 20°C had recovered to their normal level of feeding activities, but not the other treatment groups. These findings may provide preliminary data on how thermal tolerance determines the present distribution of T. tridentatus, which are found in large numbers around Beibu Gulf (annual temperature variation: 22–30°C), while considerably lower population densities are observed in the colder southern Sea of Japan and warmer seas of Southeast Asia.  相似文献

Summary

Ebalia tuberosa feeds mainly on small invertebrates but will also scavenge. The morphology of the feeding and grooming appendages is described paying particular attention to the structure and distribution of the setae. The movements of the various appendages during feeding are analysed. The mouthparts function in manipulating, grasping and cutting the food; in forming setal screens which prevent food from falling out of the mouth region; in creating water currents to waft away rejected material; and in cleaning each other. Setal structure is correlated with function. Those appendages which manipulate the food are armed with cuspidate and serrate setae while those which hold the food string steady during cutting carry plumodenticulate setae. Plumodenticulate and serrulate setae of various types make up two buccal setal screens, one transverse and the other longitudinal. The rejection current is generated by the flagella of the exopodites of the 1st and 2nd maxillipeds which bear long plumose setae. The main cleaning appendages are the 3rd maxillipeds whose distal segments bear serrate setae. In addition, various appendages bear fields of plumodenticulate setae which brush and clean adjacent surfaces during the normal feeding movements of the mouthparts.  相似文献

Summary

This paper is concerned with the general biology of the notodontid moth, A. bronneomixia whose larvae are found to be serious defoliators of the West African indigo plant, Lonchocarpus cyanescens.

At temperatures fluctuating between 21°C and 29°C (mean 22·5°C) and humidities between 70 to 95 per cent eggs developed and hatched in a mean of 11·1 days from deposition, mean hatch being 93 per cent.

Under the said environmental conditions, the life cycle from egg to adult entailed six larval instars and a prepupal stage before the real pupa, all lasting 60 to 80 days. Larvae were strongly monophagous, fed communally and in nature pupated in soil/litter very close to the foot of their invaded food plant.

Adults were retiring and in the field deposited clusters of numerous eggs preferably on the abaxial surfaces of their food plants. In nature, this moth's population seemed strongly regulated by high egg and larval parasitization, larval predation and fungal attacks at the pupal stage.  相似文献

Pollen analysis of larval food allows identification of plants used as nest provision sources. Considering the importance of Centris analis in pollination, we aimed to identify its plant sources, food niche width in Cerrado, and analyze the use of sources between cool/dry and warm/wet seasons. We sampled 22 nests collected in two areas from February 2008 to October 2009. Heteropterys spp. (Malpighiaceae) were the main pollen sources, but Byrsomia spp. (Malpighiaceae), Banisteriopsis malifolia (Malpighiaceae), Solanum lycocarpum (Solanaceae) and Machaerium spp. (Leguminosae) were also important food sources. There was no difference in the use of the sources between the seasons (F1,100?=?0.001; p?=?0.979). Despite the high number of pollen types (n?=?14) the food niche widths were low, H?=?0.777 and H?=?0.949, which can be explained by the dominance of some food items. Hence, C. analis use, profusely, a few plants as food sources that could be considered conservation targets.  相似文献

Natural history data on snakes collected in situ are scarce because of the great sampling effort required to record individuals with methods that do not interfere with their activities (e.g. visual surveys). We collected data on relative abundance and natural history, including records of ingested prey, microhabitat use, and behaviour of a snake assemblage along transects marked alongside a river in south-eastern Brazil. We recorded eight species from two families, Viperidae and Dipsadidae using visual searches over 12 months. We quantified available microhabitats in the sampled transects and used electivity indices to determine preferred microhabitats for the pit viper Bothrops moojeni, the most frequent species. Several species of snakes use riverside habitats where they can find food and suitable microhabitats, even in areas that are not pristine, adding to the importance of preserving the remaining riverside vegetation and habitat structure in such areas.  相似文献
