Summary By comparing steroid sulphatase levels per se, and also ratios to -galactosidase, in 6 sets of mice — normal females, entire and castrated males both with and without exogenous testosterone administration — we obtained support for the contention that induction of this enzyme is in part controlled by male hormones.

Inhibition and sex specific induction of spawning by serotonergic ligands in the zebra musselDreissena polymorpha (Pallas)

Serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT) stimulates spawning in the zebra mussel (Dressena polymorpha), a macrofouling European bivalve that has recently invaded North America. To develop methods of controlling zebra mussel spawning, two vertebrate serotonin antagonists, methiothepin and metergoline, known to bind with high affinity to snail 5-HT receptors, were tested for their ability to block 5-HT-induced spawning in zebra mussels. Methiothepin inhibited 5-HT-induced spawning at concentrations as low as 10^–6 M. Metergoline (10^–4 M) inhibited 5-HT-induced spawning; however, at lower concentrations (10^–8 to 10^–5 M), metergoline by itself significantly induced spawning in male, but not female zebra mussels. Metergoline (10^–5 M)-induced male spawning was inhibited by 10^–5 M methiothepin. Thus, methiothepin is the most effective inhibitor and metergoline the most powerful inducer of spawning yet tested in zebra mussels.

Zusammenfassung Ein Vergleich der Aminosäuresequenzen von menschlichen Wachstumshormonen und menschlichem Chorion-Somatomammotropin mit denjenigen von Prolactin zeigt, dass 26% des Rückstandes in allen drei Molekülen die gleiche Position hatten mit zusätzlichen 34% als möglichen Ersatz. Alle drei Hormone scheinen einen gleichen Ursprung zu haben.

The tissue localization of 125I-HCG was studied in intact mice. 125I-HCG concentrated in the thecal and interstitial tissues of the ovary. Differential uptake occurred in the corpora lutea which was dependent on the age and vascularization of the luteal body.

The enhanced induction of metallothionein by zinc, its half-life in the marine fish Pleuronectes platessa, and the influence of stress factors on metallothionein levels

Intraperitoneal injection of zinc raised levels of a hepatic metallothionein-like species. Assuming that this species was metallothionein (MT) then levels were raised from approximately 20 micrograms/g to 300 micrograms/g in 7 days, and levels thereafter remained high for the next 4 weeks. The half-lives of the protein in liver and kidney from starved fish, measured using in vivo incorporation of 35S cysteine at 11 degrees C, were approximately 27 days and 32 days respectively. The following agents failed to stimulate synthesis of MT in plaice: stress (due to catching), endotoxin, dexamethasone, cortisol and turpentine.     

Stimulation of human chorionic gonadotropin and progesterone secretion by tumor promoters,phorbol ester and teleocidin B,in cultured choriocarcinoma cells

Summary Both 12-O-tetradecanoyl-phorbol-1-acetate and teleocidin B stimulated the secretion of human chorionic gonadotropin by cultured choriocarcinoma cells. These tumor promoters also stimulated production of progesterone in the cells. However, the 2 tumor promoters did not exert a marked effect on the cellular binding of epidermal growth factor that also had a stimulatory effect on production of these hormones.

Chez les témoins non opérés ou ayant subi une opération factice, la diapause reproductive persiste.
