Zusammenfassung Nach abrupter überführung von Zahnkarpfen aus Süsswasser in verdünntes Meerwasser schwingt sich der Pool der sogenannten freien Aminosäuren von einem ursprünglichen auf einen neuen erhöhten stationären Zustand ein. Ein ganz entsprechendes Zeitverhalten hat der H³-Thymidin-Markierungsindex (Anzahl markierter Kerne/Gesamtkernzahl) in Melanomen von Bastarden, deren Farbzellen genetisch total dereprimiert sind.

Zusammenfassung Es wird über den Fortgang früherer Arbeiten 5 berichtet. Bei Zahnkarpfen-Melanomen, die durch total dereprimierte zellendeterminierende Gene bedingt sind, vermögen freie Aminosäuren den H³-Thymidineinbau zu stimulieren. Ein spezifisches Repressionsgen, das in einfacher Dosis das Tumorwachstum stark vermindert und in doppelter Dosis vollständig unterdrückt, hemmt den Stimulationseffekt der Aminosäuren. Tumorbildung erfolgt in zwei Schritten: 1. Derepression zellendeterminierender Gene und 2. Stimulation der Replikation in Zellen, die von diesen Genen determiniert werden.

Ultrasonic comparison of two morphologically distinct melanosomes in malignant melanomas

Summary Ultrasonic measurement (0.333–200 MHz) of melanosomes isolated from B16 and Harding Passey (HP) mouse melanomas indicates that the partial wave resonance and principal relaxation of the 2 kinds of melanosomes are similar, but that their stochastic resonance is markedly different. The structure of the melanosomes appears basically amorphous, but linearly ordered and copolymeric in the molecular dimension of a segment composed of 5–6 zigzag units, which are packed closely in B16 and more openly in HP.Acknowledgment. Surgical grafting of malignant human melanomas into athymic nu/nu mice : macroscopic and microscopic study

Tissue from 5 human malignant melanomas was surgically grafted into 39 athymic mice, 20 on lombar muscles covered by their aponevrosis, 13 on the intraperitoneal surface of the abdominal wall, 6 between the dorsal muscles and rib cage. These encapsulated, non-infiltrating, non-destructive tumours were clinically, macroscopically and histologically benign, but cytologically they have a malignant aspect. These were no perceptible visceral, cutaneous or muscular metastases. It would seem that a phenomenon of loosing of invasivness and destruction appeared. However further studies with other tumours and different experimental conditions will be needed to confirm the existence of this phenomenon.     

Chiasmate meiosis in roaches. II. Meiosis in Blatella supellectilium Serv.

Summary In the cockroach, Blattella supellectilium Serv., meiosis in the male is of a normal, chiasmatic type, with an average chiasma frequency of 1.3 per bivalent (2n=22+XO).This paper is dedicated to my Professor and Principal, Dr J.C. Water compartments in the myelinated nerve. III. Pulsed NMR results.

3 experimentally distinct transverse relaxation components of the water in frog sciatic nerve are obtained by Carr-Purcell-Meiboom-Gill technique. The relative weights of these components: approximately 29%; approximately 50%; approximately 21% fit well with water compartments in this tissue as revealed by previous methods.     

Biochemical compartmentation of fish tissues. II. Nonspecific phosphomonoesterases in brain.

The specific activities of acid and alkaline phosphatases in different regions of the brain of 9 nutritionally important fishes were worked out. The region consisting of pituitary, hypothalamus and thalamus showed the highest acid and alkaline phosphatase activities. Least activities of both the enzymes were found in the cerebellum and medulla oblongata. The piscivorous fishes contain the highest acid and alkaline phosphatase activity followed by cat fishes and major carps. The distributional pattern of these 2 enzymes in 4 regions of the brain of 9 fishes is the same.     

Epilepsy in women. Oestrogen and progesterone plasma levels.

Comparison is made between numbers of fits and estrogen, progesterone plasma values during the menstrual cycle of women with epilepsy. All six cycles in women with ovulation had a significant positive correlation between estrogen/progesterone ratio and scores of fits. Three periods without ovulation all showed a significant correlation to estrogen variations.     

Studies on chemotaxis. VII. Cytotaxins in rabbit serum

Zusammenfassung Die Untersuchungen zeigen, dass mehrere Zytotaxine im Kaninchenserum vorhanden sein können. Zwei davon wirken spezifisch auf Granulozyten und ein anderes spezifisch auf mononukleare Zellen.
