X-rays from the Sun

X-ray astronomy began in 1948 with the first detection of X-rays from the Sun. Astronomical X-ray observations need to be performed from high-altitude rockets and satellites because the Earth's atmosphere absorbs X-rays. Currently about 100,000 X-ray sources are known all over the sky. The Sun is by far the strongest source. The outermost solar atmosphere, the corona, emits X-rays due to its high temperature of a few million K. Solar X-ray emission is highly variable. Eruptions lead to variations of the X-ray flux on time scales of minutes. The average X-ray flux varies with the 11-year sunspot cycle by a factor of about 1000. Solar X-rays have a profound influence on the Earth's upper atmosphere.

Riassunto È presentato uno studio sulla fissazione del⁵¹Cr--glicerofosfato. Il⁵¹Cr di questo composto qui presenta una elevata stabilità chimica è fissato nella parte minerale dell'osso per un meccanismo d'intercambio cationico.     

Simple estimation of blood content in bone homogenates for the determination of the real amount of drugs in bone tissue

Summary The content of blood in bone homogenates can be determined quantitatively by estimation of the haemin in the homogenate and in a sample of peripheral blood taken at the same time. Haem is completely split from the haemoglobin molecule by reaction with hydrochloric acid-acetone and converted to haemin, which can be analyzed spectrophotometrically. The blood content can be calculated from the amount of haemin in the homogenate in relation to that of the peripheral blood. This method is useful to determine the real amount of drugs in bone tissue.Acknowledgment. Thanks are due to Dr N. Walker and Dr H. Low angle reflection in X-ray diffraction patterns of bone tissue

Zusammenfassung Es konnten Kleinwinkel-Röntgenbeugungen an Diffraktionsbildern von dekollagenisiertem Fischknochen beobachtet werden. Diese Beugungen können vollständig zu der Partikelgrösse in der kontinuierlichen Kleinwinkelbeugung weniger geordneter Systeme in Beziehung gesetzt werden. Die Ergebnisse betonen die nahe Verwandtschaft zwischen der Grösse der Apatit-Partikel und der periodischen Struktur des Kollagens.     

A microradiographic study of bone tissue in ovarian dermoid cyst

Zusammenfassung Die Verteilung von Kalzium im Knochengewebe in ovarialen Dermoidzysten wurde mit Hilfe der mikroradiographischen Technik studiert. Dabei konnten Havers'sche Systeme in verschiedenen Mineralisierungsstadien, die eine gut differenzierte Entwicklung des Knochengewebes andeuten, gesehen werden.     

Regulation of neutrophil trafficking from the bone marrow

Neutrophils are an essential component of the innate immune response and a major contributor to inflammation. Consequently, neutrophil homeostasis in the blood is highly regulated. Neutrophil number in the blood is determined by the balance between neutrophil production in the bone marrow and release from the bone marrow to blood with neutrophil clearance from the circulation. This review will focus on mechanisms regulating neutrophil release from the bone marrow. In particular, recent data demonstrating a central role for the chemokines CXCL12 and CXCL2 in regulating neutrophil egress from the bone marrow will be discussed.     

The effect of formaldehyde on the mutagenic action of X-rays inDrosophila

Zusammenfassung Vor einer Röntgenbestrahlung, deren Dosis von 1700 bis 2200 r variierte, wurdeDrosophila-Männchen Formalinlösung in schwacher, submutagener Konzentration injiziert. Es zeigte sich, dass im Vergleich zu den Kontrollen, welche nur bestrahlt wurden, die Mutationsrate nach Formalin-Vorbehandlung signifikant gesteigert war. Dabei wurden spätere Entwicklungsstadien der Spermatogenese erfasst als nach einer Vorbehandlung mit Zyanid, Azid und einem organischen Peroxid; bei reifen Spermatozoen liess sich jedoch keine Zunahme der Mutationsrate feststellen. Die Befunde weisen darauf hin, dass ein erhöhter Gehalt an organischen Peroxiden in den vorbehandelten Zellen die Chromosomen empfindlicher macht für die mutagene Wirkung der Röntgenbestrahlung.

Transfer of the antigenicity of guinea pig bone marrow implants to the graft tissue in explantation experiments

Zusammenfassung Der Übertritt von Antigenmaterial aus heterogenem Induktor in Ektoderm wurde mit der Ringpräzipitation untersucht. Nach Entfernung des Implantates wurde als Antigen ein Ektodermextrakt verwendet und als Induktor alkoholbehandeltes Knochenmark von Meerschweinchen. Die ins Ektoderm übergetretene Antigenmenge war bei 3 h alten Kulturen grösser als bei 1 h alten.     

On the biological function of cathepsin in tail tissue ofXenopus larvae

Zusammenfassung Die Bestimmung der Kathepsinaktivität an wachsenden und in Rückbildung begriffenen Schwänzen vonXenopuslarven mittels der vonDuspiva ⁵ ausgearbeiteten Casein-Harnstoffmethode führte zur Feststellung, dass dem Kathepsinsystem eine vorwiegend proteolytische Funktion zukommt.     

On conceptual issues in classical electrodynamics: Prospects and problems of an action-at-a-distance interpretation

Some conceptual issues in the foundations of classical electrodynamics concerning the interaction between particles and fields have recently received increased attention among philosophers of physics. After a brief review of the debate, I argue that there are essentially two incompatible solutions to these issues corresponding to F.A. Muller's distinction between the extension and the renormalization program. Neither of these solutions comes free of cost: the extension program is plagued with all problems related to extended elementary charges, the renormalization program works with point charges but trades in the notorious divergences of the field energies. The aim of this paper is to bring back into the discussion a third alternative, the action-at-a-distance program, which avoids both the riddles of extended elementary charges as well as the divergences although it admittedly has other problems. It will be discussed, why action-at-a-distance theories are actually not a far cry from particle–field theories, and I will argue that the main reasons for rejecting action-at-a-distance theories originate in certain metaphysical prejudices about locality and energy conservation. I will broadly suggest how these concepts could be adapted in order to allow for action at a distance.
