There has been a considerable amount of studies on gender difference in conversation since the 1970s.Early studies flesh out an outline of conversational processes,inspiring new avenues for research and theory.This paper,organized historically,reviews the main research on the topic,beginning with some of the early work done in the 1970s and then continuing to some reactions to the work later.

As the spokesman of the Jazz Age,F.Scott Fitzgerald ,based on his own experience,writes his masterpiece-The Great Gatsby.Through abundant symbols,Fitzgerald profoundly depicts the social prospect of Jazz Age and successfully displays the process of the disillusionment of American Dream which exists in majority people in 1920s.This paper,based on some basic symbolic theories,discusses how the author brings the deep philosophy to the surface to show his attitude,to reveal the theme by these symbols.And by analyzing the symbolic meanings of some characters,it further probes some causes for the failure of American Dream and how the author pays attention to common human nature.     

mRNA differential display on gene expression in settlement metamorphosis process of Ruditapes philippinarum larvae

The mRNA differential display （DDRT-PCR） technique was adopted to find out the genes related to settlement metamorphosis development process of Ruditapes philippinarum larvae. In this study, we have obtained three hundred and forty-six amplification bands in total from pediveliger larvae, veliger larvae, eye spot larvae and post-larvae. Sixty-five out of three hundred and forty-six bands are distinctly differential display from band pattern, which can be put into four groups, standing for different expression characters. Sixteen differential display bands were cloned, sequenced and analyzed and nine different sequences are obtained in the study. Three sequences have higher similarity to the cDNAs deposited in database and three are very similar to the rDNA of other species, considered as the rDNA of Ruditapes philippi narum. The rest three sequences are found to be novel sequences after analyzed. Their accession numbers are AY916799, AY916798, and AY916797 respectively. We thought the novel sequences are possibly relevant to the early embryo development of Ruditapes philippinarum larvae and can provide some fundamental understandings that are helpful for the improvement of scallop seed raising industry.     

Couple analyzing the acoustic emission characters from hard composite rock fracture

Rock mass is fractured media. Its fracture is a nonlinear process. The accumulation of acoustic emission (AE) is closely related to the degree of damage. The dynamics problem is simply described based on the non-equilibrium statistical theory of crack evolvement, trying to use the hybrid analysis of the statistical theory and scan electron microscopy (SEM), the characters of AE sig nals from rock damage in a mined-out area is synthetically analyzed and evaluated. These provide an evidence to reverse deduce and accurately infer the position of rock fracture for dynamical hazard control.     

Liquid fragility——A key togoing deep into materials of glassy states

“Liquid fragility“ is a concept that has been widely used in the investigation on the glass community,though it was presented less than two decades ago. The concept enables the comparison between the glass-forming liquids with different dynamic characters by using a general criterion, in which the temperature scale is reduced by the glass transition temperature. In order to illuminate the significance of the concept in the fields of the glass transition,structural relaxation process and the structure of supercooled liquids, the accomplished progress and the faced challenges are summarized from different aspects such as on the correlation between dynamics and thermodynamic characters of condensed matters, on the energy landscape, on the nonexponential relaxation and on the theoretical model of microstructure and medium-range order. The tendency of investigation in “liquid fragility“ is also evaluated.

Owing to the influences of Greek's view of fate, Dorset peasant's fatalism and Schopenhauer' s pessimistic philosophy, Hardy showed more or less a pessimistic tendency in his early writings and this tendency illustrated itself in his writing of Eustacia, heroine of The Return of the Native. He believed that Eustacia' s tragedy resulted from the disagreement between her aspiration for a brilliant life outside Egdon Heath and the fate imposed on her by some mysterious force working at odds with her. This is what the paper attempts to prove.     

Urban Transport and Sustainable Transport Strategies： A Case Study of Karachi, Pakistan

The uncontrolled growth in urbanization and motorization generally contributes to an urban land use and transportation system that is socially, economically, and environmentally unsustainable. This paper uses Karachi as a case study, which is the largest urban and economic centre of Pakistan, passing through an uncontrolled phase of rapid urbanization and motorization. The paper first reviews research related to sustainable transportation systems to comprehend the concept of sustainable development and transporta-tion. The paper then evaluates the existing transportation and infrastructure system, national transportation policies, and urban transportation projects to determine if the current paradigm is moving toward or away from sustainable transportation. Furthermore, the principles for sustainable urban transportation are devel-oped to see what significance national transportation policies have given to urban transportation from a sus-tainable transportation point of view. Finally some strategies are suggested, adoption of which may lead to a sustainable urban development and transportation system in Karachi.     

Controllable growth of dielectric/semiconductor integrated films

Currently, electronic information systems are developing quickly towards further miniaturization and monolithic integration so as to realize smaller volume, higher velocity and lower power consumption. For this purpose, the integration of all sorts of active devices （mainly fabricated by semiconductors） with passive devices （fabricated by functional materials） is particularly important and impendent. Therefore, it is necessary to integrate multifunctional oxide dielectrics possessing electric, magnetic, acoustic, optical and thermal properties characterized by spontaneous polarization with semiconductors bearing the characters of carrier transportation to form artificial structures via deposition of solid films. This kind of integrated films may have two characters, i.e., the all-in-one multifuncUon and modulation of electromagnetic properties by hetero-interface. This makes it possible to realize monolithic integration of detecting, processing, transmission, executing and storing of electronic information. Meanwhile, possible integrated coupling effects will be pursued instead of exploring the limited physical properties of the related materials. In this paper, we put forward a new direction of developing electronic devices with higher performances, and demonstrate some results concerning our recent research on the interface-controllable integrated growth of dielectrics and GaN. Recent progresses of the related research in the world are also reviewed.

On the one hand, he respects women＇s elegance, beauty and view on love. He wants to get love and care from them. On the other hand, he holds in awe on women. He assumes women are changeable, and is afraid of being hurt. Hemingway＇ s mind is full of conflicts, and his love, hatred, sympathy belong to not merely male, but also female. No matter she is angel or evil, he can＇t help himself and his readers falling in love with these women of extraordinary beauty.     

Distribution and correlation analysis of wildfire and weather data in Japan

To establish the wildfire danger rating system, detailed data of wildfire and some related parameters such as weather,population and tree species are required. In this paper, the raw data of weather parameters in Japan are first expanded into more detailed data. The daily value of each weather parameter in each third-level mesh, which is about 1 km × 1 km in size, from year 1999 to 2000 is calculated by means of inverse distance weighted interpolation. Expansion results for third-level meshes are demonstrated. Fire probability for each parameter is calculated and analyzed. It is found that the dependency relation of fire probability on some parameters have surprisingly regular format. The data calculated and analyzed in the paper and the results may act as a basic database for wildfire researchers, and are expected to promote the study of wildfire danger rating method and the development of such systems.     

Study on the Similarities and Differences of Body Measurement Terminology between ASTM and China GB Standard

The similarities and differences of ASTM and China GB standard are studied in three aspects: measure instrument, terminology and applicable field. They are similar on the measuring apparatus and GB has less measurements, such as girth, length and width measurements than ASTM and it lack across chest width, back width, total crotch length and shoulder slope which are important measurements in pattern making. ASTM classifies its standards according to the customers' size, gender and age. So we think GB standard could make some modifications from these fields to satisfy the users.     

A Comparative Study of the Jerome Model and the Horace Model

This paper will try to compare the Jerome model with the Horace model to look into advantages, shortages and relationship be-tween them. It mainly discusses the important roles of the Jerome model and the Horace model in turning Chinese from their translation ef-fects. The present article comes to a conclusion that they are opposite, related, complementary, melting and permeating. And it gives us anidea that we should neither praise nor censure either of them, and we should adopt a correct method according to the concrete conditions toachieve a perfect translation effect.     

The Faithfulness Principle of Literary Translation

In the recent decades,whenever the question of principles of translation is under discussion,the three characters,faithfulness,expressiveness and elegance formulated by Yan Fu in his Introductory Remarks are thought of and supported as the one and only maxim all translators must absorb.But the three principles for translation,especially some of the methods related with them,seem to be not one hunderd percent applicable to the work of translation today.It is necessary to make a re?evaluation of them.We should neither negate nor affirm them as a whole without any criticism or revision.The correct attitude towards them is to accept them critically and absorb what is still useful to us.     

Research on the relationship between site function and environment at the site of Zhongba,Chongqing City,China

The Zhongba site has been demonstrated to be a location of salt production based on multi-disciplinary research including salt archaeology,environmental archaeology,zooarchaeology,paleobotany,and other natural science examinations.The continuity of salt production from the Han Dynasty to the present day as understood primarily from ancient texts can now be traced back to even earlier times. Based on the characteristics of cultural layer deposits,features,and artifacts,Zhongba can be clearly distinguished from known settlements,and from bronze,iron,pottery and porcelain workshops.According to various natural science examinations,the major impurities in local salt brine are also found in floor features,brine troughs,and rounded bottom pots at the site even though NaCl itself was not preserved.These traces were left over from the salt production process rather than being naturally deposited.Zhongba and its constituent features and artifacts share many common characters with other salt production sites around the world.Consequently,the Zhongba site can be confidently identified as a salt production site where activity continued for several thousand years.The formation of the site cannot be separated from salt production,and it is also highly related to its natural environment.     

New observations of the lobopod-like worm Facivermis from the Early Cambrian Chengjiang Lagersttte

Facivermis yunnanicus （Hou ＆ Chen, 1989）, from the Early Cambrian Chengjiang Lagerstatte, a worm-like fossil with 5 pairs of tentacles and a perceived shrunken end, has been regarded as related to polychaetes, later it has been variously interpreted as Iobopods, Pentastoma and Iophophorates. Newly discovered complete specimens by the ELI field team show that the taxon has, in addition to the 5 pairs of appendages, a pear-shaped trunk end bearing two or three circles of hooks. Accordingly based on these important morphological characters, reconsideration of its affinities is provided and the taxonomy is remedied herein. Because the five pairs of appendages of Facivermis yunnanicus resemble the appendages of the fore-trunk of Iobopod Miraluolishania （Liu ＆ Shu, 2004）, it seems that they are homologous structures. Therefore, the affinities of Facivermis are regarded here as being close to the Iobopods, in addition, the lobe-like appendages of Facivermis are very crucial to exploring the origin of the appendages of Iobopods and arthropods.     

A Milestone in China’s Space History —The White Paper on China’s Space Activities

The white paper document titled“China’s Space Activities”,released in November２０００by the Information Office of the State Council,represents the first time for China to fully,systematically and publicly introduce to the world China’s space development strategy and concerned policies．Its release is a milestone event in the country’s space history,bearing great importance and profound influence to its future space efforts．The paper here describes the shaping processes of some important new ideas and concepts,including the connotative meaning of“space activities in a broad sense”and the roles and positions of different sectors in such activities．It also briefly discusses related policies concerning the country’s space development and short term concepts and plans on its civil space activities．     

Research advances in the Mesozoic tectonic regimes during the formation of Jiaodong ore cluster area

Based on research advances of the tectonic regime in Jiaodong ore cluster area and the related tectonic regime transformation in Mesozoic era in the eastern region of North China, in this paper, we first summarize some key problems required to be studied further on. Then we suggest an approach to dealing with these problems. It is known that the gold deposits in Jiaodong ore cluster area, which are of different mineralization styles, spatial distributions and geological settings, might be as a result from one or more geologic events in Mesozoic. Till now, this kind of research on the temporal evolution and spatial migration sequence, especially on the geodynamic mechanism of the above events, is far from sufficient. Moreover, quantitatively describing the action mode and the temporal?spatial framework of tectonic dynamic regimes and formulating the relative contribution of every tectonic dynamic regime for the metallogensis are still challenges to the geologists studying on the formation of Jiaodong ore cluster area. According to the interpretation of the regional tectonic analysis, the structural dynamics, the observation and the exploration of the mineralization network, we propose a geological?physical?chemical model with some constraints originated from the comprehensive analysis. We then use this model to simulate the coupled processes of the structural deformation, thermal transport, fluid flow and the chemical reaction. The obtained results indicate that the model is efficient in further analyzing the temporal?spatial evolutional trail of the tectonic regime in Jiaodong ore cluster area and in further understanding the nature of the mass metallogensis.
