Summary Electrical responses of the retinas of 4 species of microchiropteran bats stimulated by spectrally restricted light flashes were found to diverge systematically from the rhodopsin absorption spectrum. The divergence was progressively greater across the 4 species. The results appeared explainable by assuming a second photoreceptor class and photopigment which was present in progressively greater numbers in the retinas ofEptesicus fuscus, Desmodus rotundus, Artibeus jamaicensis andCarollia perspicillata.This work was made possible by equipment provided by grant No. EY 01228 from the U.S.P.H.S., Bob Hope Fight for Sight award No. G 522 and a grant from Research to Prevent Blindness, Inc. The order correlated well with light preferences based on activity patterns of the 4 species. The mosaic pattern of double cones of retinas in larval and adult piranha,Serrasalmus spilopleura, was examined. Samples from two habitats in the same reservoir, characterized by different light conditions, were examined. The same square pattern was found in all sampled retinas indicating that, for this species, there is no apparent relation between the patterns of double cone arrangement and environmental luminosity.  相似文献

The NADH-ferricyanure reductase activity of Potato microsomes is stimulated by non ionic detergents (Triton X100 and Tween80) and is partially inhibited by ionic detergents (sodium-cholate and deoxycholate). All these four detergents progressively decreased the NADH-cytochrome c reductase in the following order: sodium deoxycholate greater than Triton X100 greater than sodium cholate greater than Tween80.  相似文献

The effects of these four detergents (two non-ionic: Titron X100 and Tween 80, two ionic: sodium cholate and sodium dedeoxycholate) upon the respiratory intensities of mitochondria and upon the ADP/0 and respiratory control ratios were observed. At low concentrations and in the absence of exogenous ADP, non ionic as well as ionic detergents provoked a threefold (or fourfold) increase of the respiratory intensities of mitochondria. At higher concentrations, the four detergents were inhibitory for mitochondrial oxidations in the order: Triton X 100 greater than DOC greater than cholate greater than Tween 80. At increasing doses, the four detergents progressively decreased the phosphorylating capacities of mitochondria.  相似文献

The number and size of myelinated fibres have been determined in the nerve to medial head of the gastrocnemius muscle of Rats in which the sciatic nerve had been frozen locally 1 to 5 times at monthly intervals. The contralateral nerve was used as a control. When the measurements were made one month after the last freezing, the number of fibres increased progressively until the 3rd freezing, reaching about 220% of the normal value. No higher values were observed after 4 or 5 freezings. The mean diameter of fibres decreased with the number of operations. When the measurements were made 3, 6, 12 or 18 months after the 3rd freezing, the number of fibres decreased by about 30% between the 1st and the 3rd month and then stabilized. The mean diameter of fibres increased progressively. However, at the 18th month, the size of the myelinated fibres had not reached the normal value.  相似文献

Summary The influence on the development of the outer segments of the rat retina of far red and red light in different sequences was investigated. The far red treatment appeared to be dominating, and for animals treated with far red light first, further treatment of red light could not bring the outer segment growth back to normal. The treatments also initiated different dopamine uptakes in the retinas.  相似文献

Summary Embryo GAD activity and -amylase in the endosperm of 2 different physiological lines (CP; CV) ofxHaynaldoticum sardoum Meletti et Onnis were evaluated and different stages of seed ripening and progressively older seeds were examined. Results concerning GAD activity during ripening show differences between CP and CV seeds, the former being more active. In the ageing seeds, the GAD remains constant (CP is twice as much as CV) up to 4th year and greatly decreases at the 5th. The -amylase activity is fairly constant during ripening in CV endosperm and increases in CP: at the fully-ripe stage, both show similar values. During seed ageing, the activity decreases progressively in CV endosperm while, in CP, values are greater but fairly constant. The results are discussed in connection with dormancy and the different physiological ageing of seeds.This work was supported by a grant from the Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (Rome, Italy).Acknowledgments. Flavins generate oxidants during metabolism and when exposed to light. Here we report that the photoreceptor layer of retinas from black-eyed rats is reduced in size by a dietary regime containing excess riboflavin. The effect of excess riboflavin was dose-dependent and was manifested by a decrease in photoreceptor length. This decrease was due in part to a reduction in the thickness of the outer nuclear layer, a structure formed from stacked photoreceptor nuclei. These changes were accompanied by an increase in photoreceptor outer segment autofluorescence following illumination at 328 nm, a wavelength that corresponds to the excitation maxima of oxidized lipopigments of the retinal pigment epithelium.  相似文献

Summary Light flashes evoke an increased release of radioactivity in vitro from rabbit retinas preloaded with (3H)-GABA in vivo. Constant light does not affect the release. No light evoked release can be demonstrated from the glia. Pentobarbitone and AOAA depress the evoked release. Summary Niche width of ectoparasites of marine fishes, as measured by host range and microhabitat width, is not affected by the number of species in a community. There is no reduction in species numbers of Monogenea due to greater numbers of other parasite species, and frequencies of infection with Monogenea are greater in tropical, species-rich communities.Supported by grants from the Australian Research Grants Committee and the University of New England. Summary Aminopterin was applied to the free-living nematode Caenorhabditis briggsae and subsequent growth was recorded. Nematode populations, containing all developmental stages and selected juvenile stages, were exposed to the drug in both growth-promoting and non-promoting media. It is suggested that aminopterin creates a specific requirement for thymine in thymine-free medium. In otherwise growth-promoting medium, aminopterin-induced thymine deficiency will lead to progressively unbalanced growth and maturation and hence to sterility even after removal of the drug. The omission of essential amino acids from the medium during thymine starvation prevents larval growth and results in better reproduction and faster proliferation in aminopterin-free medium. The 4 juvenile stages exhibit a different response to thymine starvation created by aminopterin.  相似文献

By means of many electrophoresis techniques, the serum of Ambystoma dumerilii was studied. The pattern in cellulose acetate is different from A. mexicanum proteinogram. Direct two-dimensional analysis in acetate/polyacrylamid gel with progressively increasing concentration from 4-30%, gives us the opportunity to observe 41 proteic components. By immunological results, the fastest proteic fraction is equivalent to a globuline with alpha-mobility more than an albumin. A nomenclature for this blood serum is proposed.  相似文献
