A potent actomyosin ATPase activator from the Okinawan marine spongeAgelas cf.nemoechinata

A potent attractant of zoospores ofAphanomyces cochlioides isolated from its host,Spinacia oleracea

A highly potent attractant of zoospores ofAphanomyces cochlioides, a causal fungus of the root rot disease of spinach (Spinacia oleracea), was isolated from spinach roots, and its structure was determined by spectroscopic evidence and chemical synthesis as cochliophilin A (5-hydroxy-6,7-methylenedioxyflavone,1). A chromosorb particle prepared by soaking in solution of1 showed a potent attracting activity toward the zoospores using concentrations of1 above 10^–9 or 10^–10 M.     

1,1-Dimethyl-5,6-dihydroxyindolinium chloride from a deep water marine sponge,Dercitus sp.

Summary 1,1-Dimethyl-5,6-dihydroxyindolinium chloride (1a)was identified from a deep water sample of the marine sponge,Dercitus sp., and its structure was elucidated by spectral methods.Acknowledgments. Alarm pheromones from the Mediterranean opisthobranchHaminoea navicula

Summary Structure and absolute stereochemistry of two new 3-alkylpyridines, haminol-A (3) and haminol-B (4), isolated from the cephalaspidean molluscHaminoea navicula, have been determined by means of spectral and chemical methods. Haminols are secreted byH. navicula when it is molested, and these induce an alarm response in trail-following conspecifics.In part presented at the 32nd IUPAC Congress Stockholm, 2–7 August 1989. Taxuspine D,a new taxane diterpene fromTaxus cuspidata with potent inhibitory activity against Ca2+-induced depolymerization of microtubules

A new taxane diterpenoid, taxuspine D (1), possessing an enolacetate moiety, has been isolated from stems of the Japanese yewTaxus cuspidata Sieb. et Zucc., and the structure elucidated on the basis of spectroscopic data. Taxuspine D (1) markedly inhibited Ca²⁺-induced depolymerization of microtubules.     

A constitutive heparinase in aFlavobacterium sp

Summary The isolation of a small gram-negative rod, lacking flagella or pili, and tentatively identified as aFlavobacterium sp., giving exceptionally high yields of heparinase, is reported. Structure revision and cytotoxicity of the germacranolide,stizolicin, fromStizolophus balsamitus (Asteraceae)

Cardenolide glycosides from the adults and eggs ofChrysolina fuliginosa (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae)

Besides the known sarmentogenin 3-O--D-allopyranoside (1) and digitoxigenin-3-O-[-D-xylopyranosyl-(14)-2, 3-di-O-acetyl--D-allopyranoside] (4), four new cardiac glycosides (2, 3, 5 and6) have been isolated from the defensive glands of adults ofChrysolina fuliginosa. The structures of the new compounds were determined by¹H NMR at 600 MHz and FABMS. Compounds1–6, present in the adults ofC. fuliginosa, have also been identified in the eggs.     

Chemical defense in the three European species ofCrematogaster ants

The composition of the Dufour gland of the antC. scutellaris has been reinvestigated by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. The major components of the gland are (2E,5E,12Z)-4-oxoheneicosa-2,5,12-trien-1-ol acetate (1a) its ¹⁴ and ¹⁶ double bond isomers (1b and1c), and the corresponding (Z,Z)-dienes5a and5b, all containing an acetylated C₂₁ chain. The previously proposed structures1d, 1e, and5c, which are based on an homologous acetylated C₂₃ chain, correspond to minor derivatives present in the gland. Traces of acetylated C₁₉ homologs, tentatively identified as1g-1i, have also been found. The Dufour gland contents of the two other EuropeanCrematogaster species have also been studied.C. auberti is very similar toC. scutellaris in producing mainly1a, 1b and1c, together with the same higher and lower homologs, but it lacks the dienic derivatives5, whereasC. sordidula contains essentially the acetylated C₁₉ compounds1g, 1h, and1i, accompanied by acetylated C₁₇ homologs.     

Formation of plantlets from callus cultures of ginseng (Panax ginseng)

Summary From callus cultures ofPanax ginseng C.A. Mayer, shoots and roots were systematically formed at a high rate (in all flasks) under optimal culture conditions. The chemical constituents and the morphological structures of the differentiated plantlets closely resembled those of the native plants.Part 44 in the series Studies on Plant Tissue Culture. Staurosporine aglycone (K252-c) and arcyriaflavin A from the marine ascidian,Eudistoma sp

Staurosporine aglycone (K252-c) (compound1) and arcyriaflavin A (2) were isolated from a specimen of the marine ascidian,Eudistoma sp., collected off the coast of West Africa. In addition to expressing micromolar and submicromolar inhibition of enzyme activity against seven protein kinase C isoenzymes and inhibition of proliferation of the human lung cancer A549 and P388 murine leukemia cell lines,1 also inhibited cell adhesion of the EL-4.IL-2 cell line and expressed activity in the K562 bleb and neutrophil assays.     

Cortinarins inCortinarius speciosissimus? A critical revision

Summary Fluorescent cyclic decapeptides, the so-called cortinarins, have been claimed to cause the toxicity of the deadly poisonous mushroomCortinarius speciosissimus. As the structure elucidation described in the literature is doubtful in decisive parts, the proposed structures must be disputed. The present study demonstrates that the fluorescence is mainly due to ergosta-4,6,8 (14),22-tetraen-3-one (8) and to photodecomposition products of the nephrotoxin orellanine (1). Moreover, we were not able to reproduce the isolation of fluorescent or any other cyclic peptides related to cortinarins fromC. speciosissimus, by various methods.     

Pheromone components of the female elephant hawk-moth,Deilephila elpenor,and the silver-striped hawk-moth,Hippotion celerio

By means of gas chromatographic and mass spectroscopic methods, and combined GC-electroantennogram and electrosensillogram techniques, (E)-11-hexadecenal and (10E, 12E)-10,12-hexadecadienal [(E,E)-bombykal is also the main constituent of the pheromone of the silver-striped hawk-mothHippotion celerio. The biological activity of the substances was demonstrated with electroantennogram and single cell recording, and the physiological efficacy of the different hexadecadienal isomers compared.Pheromones, 79; as Pheromones, 78 is taken: Wu, Cai-Hong, and Bestmann, H. Determination of diel periodicity of sex pheromone release in three species of Lepidoptera by ‘closed-loop-stripping’

Summary By means of closed-loop-stripping and subsequent GC analyses the diel periodicity of release of (Z)-11-hexadecenyl acetate, (E)-8-dodecenyl acetate, and (Z)-9-tetradecenyl acetate, the main constituents of the respective sex pheromone blends ofMamestra brassicae, Cryptophlebia leucotreta andSpodoptera sunia females, was determined.Pheromones, 64. Luffariellolide,an anti-inflammatory sesterterpene from the marine spongeLuffariella sp.

Summary Luffariellolide (2) is a sesterterpene from the Palauan spongeLuffariella sp. that has useful anti-inflammatory properties. Inhibition of lipid peroxidation by diterpenoid fromPodocarpus nagi

A diterpenoid, totarol (1), fromPodocarpus nagi was evaluated as an antioxidant. This diterpenoid inhibited autoxidation of linoleic acid. Mitochondrial and microsomal lipid peroxidation induced by Fe(III)-ADP/NADH or Fe(III)-ADP/NADPH were also inhibited. Nagilactone E (2), a norditerpene lactone isolated from the same source, had no antioxidative activity. Furthermore, totarol protected red cells against oxidative hemolysis. This diterpene was shown to be effective in protecting biological systems against oxidative stresses.     

Structure assignments of two new C-18-oxygenated steroidal ketals isolated from a pacific soft coral of the genusSinularia

Summary Two new C-18-oxygenated sterols possessing a spiroketal function (1 and2) have been isolated from a soft coral of the genusSinularia. The proposed structures are based on spectral data.     

A non-peroxide norsesterterpene from a marine spongeHyrtios erecta

Summary A new norsesterterpene, hyrtial4, and known sesterterpenes,1–3, have been isolated from an anti-inflammatory active crude extract of the spongeHyrtios erecta.This sponge,Hyrtios (Heteronema) erecta Keller 1889, collected in 1980/81, from Tonga was extremely abundant in the Vava'u Is. Group.We thank Prof. R. Jacobs and his research group at UCSB for this data.     

Characterization of 17β-estradiol 3-(β-D-glucopyranoside) and 17-(α-D-glucopyranoside) as the metabolites of 17β-estradiol in the cultured ovaries of the silkworm,Bombyx mori

Summary The structures of the metabolites formed upon incubation of 17-estradiol with the ovaries of silkworm,Bombyx mori, have been determined as 17-estradiol 3-(-D-glucopyranoside) (1) and 17-(-D-glucopyranoside) (2) by spectroscopic means.     

Observations on the toxicity and metabolic relationships of polygodial,the chemical defense of the nudibranchDendrodoris limbata

Summary Polygodial (1), the defense metabolite stored in the skin of the nudibranchDendrodoris limbata, is toxic for the mollusc itself when injected into the hepatopancreas. Biosynthetic experiments using labeled mevalonic acid were devised to investigate a possible metabolic relationship between1 and the mixture of sesquiterpenoidic esters2, stored in the hepatopancreas.
